Not even an expert grammarian would make sense of the tedious stream of advice it gives. And often it is dead wrong. You can, however, render it at least partly useful. Like HAL in "2001," its counter-productive functions can be disabled. The more you can limit the kinds of advice it's programmed to give, the better. All you have to know is when to say "no." Let SWYM show you how... Finding the control panel . Open a blank document in Word (version 7.0) and follow these steps:
  • Click on "Tools" at the top
  • Select "Options"
  • Click on the "Grammar" tab
  • Click on "Custom 1" in the window
  • Click on "Customize settings..." In the window that opens there are 2 lists of "rules." One for "grammar," one for "style." The list showing should be the grammar list (the radio button for "grammar" will be set to "on" when the window opens). To see the style list, click on the "style" radio button. With the "grammar" radio button clicked to "on," you can start customizing the grammar list. Each rule is turned off or on by checking or unchecking the box in front of it.

For those who have asked and those who may, this collection of links for writers, researchers and the terminally curious is not, was never intended to be, and will never be the all-inclusive stash of every possible link fitting our slapdash criteria for what belongs here.
We select sites with some consideration and thought for usefulness, depth, interest and je ne sais quoi and we try not to offer fifty different links to "manuscript submission." Sometimes we find a really cool site on a subject we already cover and mull over which link to keep and which to set free, sometimes we keep both and add a third. We lean toward linking to cool sites maintained by people we've met in the ether, but don't use a friend's site if there's a better site elsewhere.
We don't link to just anybody and seldom link to commercial sites such as "Learn to Write in Five Days" or "We Will Publish Your Book" unless there is some no, make that a lot of free, useful content. We try to stay away from scammers and frauds; if you see links to what you think are questionable sites, drop us a line. We may or may not agree with you. Whether links are here or not is totally based on how we were feeling before our morning cup of espresso.

Two lady Lorraine Crawford and 2Lt Jeanie Kelly announced their engagements and both Neville and Lorraine Crawford successfully completed their Advanced Training Courses at Frimley Just as this report was completed we heard that Captain John Culbert has been awarded the Cadet Forces Medal in appreciation of his long service. A great boost to our morale came in the form of valuable Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment exclusively to this Contingent and H Company, Alec Aiken and his team. As ever we are indebted to Mark McDonald from 34 CTT for all that they have done and continue to do. To my constant support, to Lieutenant Commander Alan Mackie and all my officers I offer my grateful thanks. We are all especially grateful to my School Staff Instructor and friend Jim Frame.our mainstay. The Grammar School Ethos
"Every individual is of value and has
something to contribute." The school sets out to create a happy, caring and secure environment in which the individual student is able to develop his or her full potential. An awareness of the needs of others in our community is recognised and respected. Within a supportive atmosphere every student is expected to behave responsibly, and through enjoyment, enthusiasm and self-discipline become a better person. We recognise the need for mutual respect, trust and support, and every possible encouragement is given to develop good patterns of behaviour. Discipline is based upon common sence and reason. All students are encouraged to build on their own achievements; while success at public examinations is important, student contributions on the sports field, in the debating hall or on the stage are equally recognised.
    Parental Involvement
It is important that parents are fully involved in their children's education. We expect our parents to support and contribute to the day-to-day activities of the school.

These notes are a miscellany of grammatical rules and explanations, comments on style , and suggestions on usage I put together for my classes. Nothing here is carved in stone, and many comments are matters of personal preference . Anyone who can resist turning my own preferences into dogma is welcome to use this HTML edition. Comments are always welcome. I should be clear up front: I'm not a linguist, nor a scholar of the history of the language. Linguists are wary of " prescriptive
Why, then, have I spent so much time on a prescriptive and fairly traditional usage guide? Because these notes may be useful in making your writing clearer and more effective . I'm not out to make definitive statements about what's right and what's wrong , and Lord knows I wouldn't be qualified even if I tried. I can, however, make suggestions on things that are likely to

    120. Trevor Pateman: "Grammaticality Without Grammar, Iteration Without Forms"

Grammaticality without grammar, iteration without forms
    Trevor Pateman
I want to show how possible Harrisian approaches to two issues in linguistics are inter-related in their underlying conceptualisation, which then becomes more fully available for inspection. It is an interpretation of what Kant is saying in the third of his Critiques, The Critique of Judgement that there can be true judgements of beauty, of the form ' Such-and-such is beautiful' , without there being rules of beauty, stateable in advance of any particular exercise of judgement. The interpretation is persuasively developed by Mary Mothersill in her book Beauty Restored . If she is right, then what Kant is saying is one very good reason for assigning him to Romanticism rather than Classicism. Judgement is not the application of rules, but the exercise of intuition. After the event, we may be able to reflect and point to features of the object which prompted us to our judgement - indeed, to be able to do so is necessary to the project of making our judgement intersubjectively available - but in making our judgement we worked with no checklist of features necessary and sufficient to form our judgement. Kant calls this kind of judgement reflective judgement and says that it is judgement without a concept, in contrast to
