Target
Improving students' abilities to identify and comprehend pronoun-referent structures
Participants
Elementary grade students who were identified as skill deficient in understanding pronoun-referent structures
Technique
Each day the teacher began by pre-teaching six sentences taken from grade appropriate materials. Next the student read the first sentence. Then the teacher emphasized the pronoun and its referent. Immediately she asked what the pronoun stood for. When the student answered correctly, the teacher praised the student. She then restated the sentence to reinforce the student's understanding of the correct response. If the student made an error on any of these steps, the teacher repeated the entire procedure with the student. Next, the student read passages of approximately 250 words in which ten pronouns were targeted for comprehension. The teacher modeled where to find the referents for the first three pronouns. For the last seven pronouns the teacher asked what the (pronoun) stood for. If the student made an error the teacher demonstrated how to find the pronoun-referent structure.
Evaluation
Record the number of correct pronoun-referents identified.

http://www.jeanweber.com/about/grammar2.htm
Break out of the grammar trap:
Distinguish between essential and nonessential rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage
How much attention should technical communicators pay to formal rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage? Does incorrect grammar, punctuation, or usage detract from the value and usability of your group’s publications? Does your audience care, or even notice, if formal rules are broken?
Why have rules?
Grammar is the arrangement, relationships, and functions of words and the ways they are put together to form phrases, clauses or sentences. Punctuation marks are signals that help readers to understand the ideas in a passage and read more quickly and efficiently. Rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage can be essential or nonessential—or even fake! Writers and editors need to pay attention to the essential issues, but can spend less time on nonessential issues—particularly in the face of tight deadlines—and they can safely ignore the fake issues. Essential rules are those that are necessary for clear, unambiguous communication.

29. Relevant And Irrelevant Grammar
of a hyphen can lead to ambiguity, but in many cases hyphen use is a matter of style, not grammar. Many punctuation and capitalization rules for vertical lists
http://www.jeanweber.com/about/grammar2-old.htm
Relevant and irrelevant grammar rules
(Note: this article has been superceded by one titled " Distinguish between essential, nonessential, and fake rules "; it is included here as an example of an early draft. This draft was workshopped by two groups of students and edited by Geoff Hart, then revised.) When editors focus on irrelevant grammar and punctuation rules, their reputation for being unhelpful nitpickers increases. When editors focus instead on relevant grammar issues, they increase their value to writers and the writers are far more likely to appreciate the contribution of editors. What are relevant grammar and irrelevant grammar rules? Relevant grammar and punctuation rules are those that are essential for clear, unambiguous communication. Irrelevant grammar and punctuation rules are those that are not essential for clarity and unambiguity. Many such rules are a matter of style, not prescriptive grammatical rules. As style issues, they may be written into a style guide as "the way we do things here," to improve consistency in a company's publications, but editors and writers need to recognize them as style choices , not rules of English grammar.

Back to top Contents A word of advice: grammar is not math We've selected the sites on this list because on the whole, we think they're pretty good. But "rules" in writing unlike, say, rules in Newtonian physics are not written in stone. They are established by agreement among experienced writers, even though experienced writers can and do disagree all the time. You'll find, then, that on some matters grammar books and sites can offer conflicting advice. Sometimes a source's advice may even conflict with one of your professors' favorite grammatical beliefs. But although we cannot endorse any single source, on-line or off, as the last word on words, the sites we've chosen here do offer solid grammatical advice and some of them manage to be pretty amusing as well. So: armed with your native skepticism and common sense, surf away . . .

Language Conventions Comma Usage Semicolon Usage Quotation Marks Apostrophe for Possession ... Capitalization Introduction to Comma Usage Used effectively, commas provide clarity to the reader by separating various parts of sentences. Most Frequently Used Comma Rules Comma Rule #1 Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, so, and yet) joining independent clauses. A clause is defined as a group of words containing a subject and predicate. An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone. In other words, "independent clause" is another term for "simple sentence." Rule #1 states that when two or more simple sentences are joined by a coordinating conjunction, the conjunction must be preceded by a comma. What you have is a compound sentence. For example: The contestants had to complete the challenge in an hour, or they were disqualified. Comma Rule # 2 Use a comma after an introductory word or group of words. This comma indicates that the main part of the sentence is about to begin. For example: Slowly, she became aware of where she was.
