Westlandia/Identifying aspects of culture Examples of students' work
    Grade 6
    September 20, 2001
    Planning
In planning this lesson, I wanted to introduce aspects of culture in a fun, interesting way. I chose to read the book, Weslandia because it touched on many of the aspects that I would cover in the text book. This story worked nicely for modeling the graphic organizer and the power writing paragraph that the students were required to for their project. The decision of how the final project would look was done in cooperation with two other teachers.
This version of the Culture project was created to meet the needs of this group of students. My class had done Create Your Own Culture the first time I taught the unit. I realized that given the needs of this group, they would not be able to complete the project in the given time. Overall, this group needed more teacher guidance, had fewer cooperative group skills, required more time to organize, had more students who read below grade, had more students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds resulting in less background expereices.
I made the decision to have this version be more structured. Time limits and expectations were set for each part. Rather than work in groups of three or four, they worked with one partner for only part of the project. I carefully chose partners, making sure that strong readers were paired with those students needing assistance for the research part of the project.
