Visualizing Jazz Scenes
of the Harlem Renaissance
Provided by MENC in partnership with PBS Estimated Time : Ten 50-minute class sessions with out-of-class time for students to research, draft, edit, and prepare required writing projects. Overview The Harlem Renaissance represents an era in American history during which the uniqueness of African-American culture was celebrated. It was a period marked by an active and vibrant nightlife; by the publishing of a great number of short stories, plays, poems and novels by and about African-Americans; by musicals written by and starring African-Americans; and, by the creation of artwork by and about African-Americans. The Harlem Renaissance was an age during which African-Americans sought to dispel common stereotypes through their art. This lesson begins with a summary of the history and chronology of the Harlem Renaissance. Historical background consists of topics such as the northern migration of African-Americans, prohibition, postwar conditions and race relations. During this historical overview, students focus on Harlem as a "Mecca" for African American artists, musicians, and writers. Students read and respond to literary selections that either portray the Harlem jazz scene or were written during the period; they also listen and respond to relevant jazz pieces and view videotapes that illustrate the distinctiveness of the Harlem Renaissance jazz scene. Finally, students demonstrate their understanding of the Harlem Renaissance jazz scene by constructing an exhibit and producing written, artistic and musical interpretations.

Teacher Resources to Make Your Head Spin

That's how one teacher described this resource developed by the Missouri Department of Education and university partners. "An awesome collection of over 400 teacher-created lists of links arranged by common themes taught in the classroom," says another. That's 400 *lists*, not 400 links. Seems like more! They're called eThemes and they're part of a state service called "eMINTS - enhancing Missouri's Instructional Networked Teaching Strategies." The good news is you don't have to be a MO taxpayer to enjoy the benefits of this amazing resource. Just click on the link above and shout "Show Me!"

Maine PBS Road Diaries Using Journal Writing in the Classroom Do you remember when you were just learning how to write? How the blank page seemed as barren and unforgiving as a desert? In fact, scratch that: anxiety about writing isn’t solely reserved for beginning writers. Chances are that even if you’re a seasoned author the last time you sat down to write anything, there was a moment—or perhaps even several days—when the blank page (or screen) rolled out in front of you like a vast vista of hot, hostile sand. Did paralysis set in? Or did you grit your teeth and begin the painful march—placing word after word after word on the paper—before giving yourself too much time to think? If you read anything at all, from great literature to the advertisements on the back of a cereal box, you can easily be duped by the impression that writing is easy, that everyone else must sit at their computers and blithely whir away at the keyboard, producing a close to perfect draft in a matter of minutes. So when it takes you dozens of stabs at an opening paragraph, it’s easy to get discouraged. Angry voices buzz in your brain like flies on a sweaty horse: I can’t think of anything to say. This sounds stupid. What’s wrong with me? I can’t write.

Welcome to Miss Hoover's...
Ralph Wiggum has never been Miss Hoover's model student. In fact, she usually doesn't pay much attention to him at all, except when he asks one of his infamous Ralph-questions. ("Miss Hoover, my worm went in my mouth and then I ate it. Can I have a new one?") But lately, Principal Skinner has been trying to impress Superintendant Chalmers to earn the school an extra spring break each year. (Principal Skinner plans to schedule this break in October, which is when he thinks everyone needs an extra spring break the most.) Superintendant Chalmers isn't so sure, though. The last time he visited Springfield Elementary, Ralph Wiggum was sitting on the floor eating paste while Miss Hoover was showing a filmstrip entitled "Pronouns: Noun's Ignorant Cousins." After the film, Superintendant Chalmers asked Ralph to name the parts of speech. Ralph replied, "Ummm, mouth, tongue, teeth, and stomach." Superintendant Chalmers had Miss Hoover arrested on the spot. Putting her under citizen's arrest for discriminating against students who eat paste, he ordered her to prepare a web site listing different places on the web where Ralph could get grammar help. He also told her he would ignore the fact that three of her students climbed out the window during the filmstrip and lifted his car on top of the jungle gym if she included web sites for teachers, too. This is her page.
