About us
World Learning, founded in 1932, received a cooperative agreement from USAID to implement the four-year NGO Strengthening Program (NSP) in Armenia. Together with its partners, IESC (International Executive Service Corps), MSI (Management Systems International), and ICNL (International Center for Not-for- Profit Law), World Learning assists in the development of the NGO sector in Armenia. The program aims at building the capacity of NGOs throughout Armenia to help them to deliver services in a more efficient manner and become better and more articulate advocates for their constituents. NSP takes an integrated approach to assist the NGO community to emerge as a strong and viable player in Armenian Civil Society. This approach seeks to build the NGO community’s self-awareness and self-confidence as a legitimate part of Armenia’s democratic evolution. Through a flexible package of technical assistance, training, and grants, the NSP aims to strengthen NGOs to become full partners with government and in time, the business community. More advanced and broad-based NGOs are indispensable to meeting the many challenges of this newly democratic society in Armenia.

NGOs Now the Fifth Estate* in Global Governance
New York, February 2, 2002 NGOs Approach Parity in Credibility with Business and Government in U.S.;
Maintain Large Advantage Over Other Major Institutions in Europe
The second annual survey of U.S. and European Opinion Leaders by Edelman PR Worldwide shows that trust in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is approaching parity with business and government and that American attitudes toward corporate social responsibility now reflect those of their European counterparts. Europeans continue to trust NGOs twice as much as government and substantially more than corporations or the media. Not surprisingly, with the focus on national defense and homeland security since 9/11, Americans' trust in their government to "do the right thing" increased from 27% to 48% between January 2001 and January 2002 while business stayed at 44%. Over the same time period, Europeans' trust in government declined by one-third from 36% to 26%, while trust in business rose from 32% to 41%. The research shows that trust in NGOs has risen from a year ago in the U.S. (from 36% to 41%) while NGOs maintain the dominant position among institutions in Europe (from 48% to 51%). "We believe NGOs are now the Fifth Estate in global governance the true credible source on issues related to the environment and social justice," said Richard Edelman, President and CEO of Edelman PR Worldwide, in a speech at the World Economic Forum in New York. "Even with global recession and the events of 9/11, NGOs have strengthened their position. Last year in the U.S., business was alone at the top of the pyramid of influence. Now companies must communicate with multiple stakeholders, especially NGOs, with speed, transparency, and an offer of interactivity."

Amy Owen Reports! NGOs Erupt After U.S. Announces Their Desertion by Amy Owen
UU Young Adult Delegate to the United Nations Conference Against Racism Durban, South Africa Report #16: Monday, September 3, 2001
Editor's note: Amy Owen, aged 24, is a member of the James Reeb UU Congregation in Madison, WI. She is a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin, studying educational psychology with a focus on forgiveness. (Durban, South Africa - Sept. 3, 2001) - Hearing a rumor that the U.S. Delegation was meeting with U.S. NGOs at 5:00 PM (or 6:00 - this is how these things go), Olivia Holmes and I found the proper room and took our seats. We waited patiently as members of the different NGOs spoke about post-Durban strategies. Suddenly a march broke in, demanding, "Reparations NOW!" and, "Was it a crime?" "YES!" "Against who?" "HUMANITY!" (slavery). Some guy leading the protestors took over the podium and started preaching. He was definitely speaking truth to the woman behind me, who was affirming him left and right, but frankly, I though he had a lot of nerve busting into the room and taking the podium as if we had gathered there to see him rather than the delegates. I was also wary of a hostile crowd spooking them off - it was a surprise to me that this meeting was occurring in the first place. After asking everyone around me who this man was, I discovered his name was Omowale Clay, of the "12th of December Movement." I wish he'd spoken more about his organization, because I was curious about the name, but no. Thankfully, someone informed us that we were being moved to a larger space, so the meeting broke up and was relocated.

Stop the War, Keep Peace in Asia Opposing the US Military Retaliation, Japan's Militarization and Korean Military Support for the US Joint Statement of Asian NGOs
We feel deep sorrow at the tragedy caused by the " terrorist attack" on September 11, in which countless thousand of precious lives were lost and many more injured, and extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives. We should point out, however, that the US launched its war of retaliation in disregard for the voices of peace-loving people of the world. This war is meaningless both for the security of US citizens from terrorism and for global peace. On the contrary, the US might be accused of dyeing the new century red by military conflict and be faced with anger and resistance of many citizens all over the world. We are NGOs working for human rights, environment, gender, poverty, etc., in Asian countries. We are also eager to bring peace to the Asian region. Based on this position, we express our opposition both to the "simultaneous terrorist attack" and to political responses against this attack by the US, Japan and Korea. First

Subject: US NGOs to Powell on Debt-free East Timor PO Box 15774 Washington, DC 20003-0774 22 April 2002 Secretary Colin L. Powell
U.S. Department of State
2201 'C' Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20520 Dear Secretary Powell: We urgently appeal to you to support the most generous grant possible without restrictive macroeconomic conditions at the May 14 and 15 pledging conference in East Timor. We strongly encourage you to work with other donor governments and international financial institutions (IFIs) to make sure that East Timor's expected financing gap is covered in its entirety. East Timor's call to fund its financing gap comes on the heels of President Bush's recently stated commitment to eradicating poverty worldwide and efforts by Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and others to make sure that grants form a large portion of international assistance to poor countries. Pledging to fund 25% of the gap would be consistent with recent positions taken by the Administration and would signal the sincerity of U.S. intentions to the world. As you likely know, the East Timorese government is expecting a $154 to $184 million shortfall in its already lean recurrent and development budgets over the first three years of independence. While less than the Administration spends on one F-22 fighter plane, for a small country like East Timor this sum could stand in the way of a promising beginning as the world's newest nation. Due to reductions in peacekeeping and other UN operations in East Timor, the U.S. will be saving substantial sums, a portion of which could be pledged in May.

T he Bolinas Lagoon is an internationally significant ecological resource. Its 1,100 acres of tidal estuary include several increasingly rare habitats that support a rich biodiversity, including several rare, threatened and endangered species. The lagoon's long term health and survival is now itself endangered due to a history of human development over the past 150 years. Because the lagoon's habitats are so valuable, its continued viability as a functioning ecosystem should be preserved . The Bolinas Lagoon Ecosystem Restoration Project is intended to do just that. This website will tell you about the lagoon's ecological values and history, the restoration project, and how YOU can help make this restoration a success.
