Using Literature To Teach Geography in High Schools. ERIC Digest.
Traditionally, the high school curriculum has been rigidly compartmentalized. Yet, linkages between disciplines in the curriculum increasingly are being made, such as the connections of English to U.S. History courses in many high schools. Another connection may be English with World Geography courses. Students of every ability level could benefit from exploring the interrelationship between these two disciplines. In this ERIC Digest, the term literature refers to novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and folk tales. It consists of narrative as opposed to expository forms of writing that are found in traditional textbooks, reference books, and news articles. By no means, however, should literature be the sole tool used to teach geography or other subjects of the social studies. Rather, each form of narrative and expository writing has its place in the social studies curriculum.

Format for Sign up for SAN FRANCISCOTen security executives have formed a group to help companies and the government create a secure information infrastructure. As previously reported by CNET News.com , the newly formed Global Council of CSOs (chief security officers) consists of nine security executives from technology, financial and Internet companies and one security chief from a government agency. The group on Wednesday said at a press conference here that it aims to clarify the role of the chief security officer in companies, help such executives understand their role in implementing the National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace and aid communications among security professionals, the technology industry and the government. "We are all going to do what we can to secure our part of cyberspace," said Howard Schmidt, chief security officer for eBay, who led the initiative to create the group. The former Microsoft chief security officer and U.S. cybersecurity czar had a significant hand in helping draft the National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace, a U.S. policy statement aimed at protecting the Internet infrastructure, computers and data from attack.

The Scholarship Scheme operated from 2001-2003 and was a key strategy during those years to ensure high quality graduates were available to teach in Victorian government schools, particularly in curriculum and geographic areas with recruitment difficulties. It is anticipated that the review will be completed early in the 2004 academic year and any outcomes will be made available at that time. Time to Teach
This week's Voice of Experience essay was originally published on spiked , a London-based Web site "for those who want to see some change in the real world.…" Educator Sue Palmer reflects on the standards (or targets) movement in the United Kingdom. "How had we let statistics become more important than children?" she wonders. Palmer has created a Web site to support her campaign to improve the quality of British primary education by returning decisions about curriculum to the professionals the teachers who know best!
You know how sometimes you go along with something because, even though it obviously isn't perfect, it seems to be headed in the right general direction? And as time goes on, it gets less and less perfect, but you carry on being a fellow-traveller because ... well, what else is there to do? And then, things get sillier and sillier until you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night thinking, 'How, in the name of sanity, did I get mixed up in all this? I've got to bail out. Now!'

Government Schools Teach People to Hate Freedom
Posted by Thomas DiLorenzo at June 30, 2003 10:06 PM
I've had at least a thousand times more fan mail than hate mail in relation to my book and some 50 LRC articles on Lincoln, and the hate mail is usually from ignoramuses. The real cowards gossip about us on FreeRepublic or some other quasi-fascist Web site. One such character who goes by the name of "Walt," a proud Lincoln/FDR/Clinton lover, has called me every foul name in the book on the Web, but when he had a chance to address me in person at a speech I gave at the Libraryof Virginia in Richmond he literally ran away like a rabbit (or chicken) that was being chased by a fox. Like Karen and the others, I delete most of this mail because it is from cowardly ignoramuses like "Walt" who are miserable people who have no life and get their kicks by spewing venom on the internet. However, not all hate mailers are in the pathetic Walt category. In almost 25 years of writing for popular (as well as academic) audiences, and receiving thousands upon thousands of letters and emails in response, it is clear to me that there are many Americans who have been programmed to hate capitalism, freedom and individualism. This is a testament to the spectacular success of the government-run schools in inculcating the hatred of freedom in the minds of the American Sheeple. Those of us who advocate private property, free trade, free markets, and the superiority of the civil society over the state will always be the targets of hate mail by brainwashed collectivists which, unfortunately, is a huge and growing proportion of the American population. No one should be surprised that the government schools teach young people to hate freedom and love their bureaucratic masters.

Teach Your Child About Politics
by Joseph Sobran
Because I write about politics, people are forever asking me the best way to teach children how our system of government works. I tell them that they can give their own children a basic civics course right in their own homes. In my own experience as a father, I have discovered several simple devices that can illustrate to a child's mind the principles on which the modern state deals with its citizens. You may find them helpful, too. For example, I used to play the simple card game War with my son. After a while, when he thoroughly understood that the higher ranking cards beat the lower ranking ones, I created a new game I called Government . In this game, I was Government, and I won every trick, regardless of who had the better card. My boy soon lost interest in my new game, but I like to think it taught him a valuable lesson for later in life. When your child is a little older, you can teach him about our tax system in a way that is easy to grasp. Offer him, say, $10 to mow the lawn. When he has mowed it and asks to be paid, withhold $5 and explain that this is income tax. Give $1 to his younger brother, and tell him that this is "fair". Also, explain that you need the other $4 yourself to cover the administrative costs of dividing the money. When he cries, tell him he is being "selfish" and "greedy". Later in life he will thank you. Make as many rules as possible. Leave the reasons for them obscure. Enforce them arbitrarily. Accuse your child of breaking rules you have never told him about. Keep him anxious that he may be violating commands you haven't yet issued. Instill in him the feeling that rules are utterly irrational. This will prepare him for living under democratic government.

'Teach the young' about service, urges Supreme Court justice
By David McGlinchey

Federal recruiters should emphasize the rewarding and exciting nature of public service in an effort to draw young people into the ranks of government workers, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor said on Monday. O'Connor, who was being presented with the Elliot L. Richardson Prize for Excellence in Public Service, said civil servants today must persuade "young people that the individual can make a difference in this world of ours." The award was presented by the Council for Excellence in Government, a Washington-based nonprofit group dedicated to improving government performance. "Teach the young," O'Connor said in

But now, along comes a nonpartisan group of high school and college students to prove them wrong. These young people are so interested that they've put photos of recalcitrant lawmakers on a special Web site and are running television commercials urging voters to throw the bums out. If voters join in, this could be the beginning of a real good- government revolution. Students4Reform, a group of interns working for Manhattan lawyer Charles Juntikka, has compiled a list of 27 state Senate and Assembly members, Democrats and Republicans, who have stalled such changes as campaign finance reform, bans on gifts from lobbyists, easier ballot access and an open budget process.
