Cuba detains dissidents, restricts U.S. diplomats HAVANA, Cuba (CNN) Cuban authorities have ended a standoff with the hijackers of a Cuban ferry, state-owned Cuban television reported Friday. The television report said military officials boarded the ship Thursday and freed the hostages without firing "a single shot." The report also indicated that everyone aboard jumped into the water. The ferry was hijacked Wednesday and was forced to sail into the Straits of Florida with at least 30 men, women and children aboard, sources told CNN. A Cuban television report Friday, referring to what it called "the operation to liberate the hostages," did not indicate what happened to the hijackers or hostages and did not mention that President Fidel Castro visited the Port of Mariel, where the freed ferry was towed, Thursday. Cuban TV reported the operation began about 1 p.m. Thursday and ended about three hours later.

ROAD TOWN, British Virgin Islands (AP) Rastafarians in Tortola for a weeklong summit praised the new government for revoking a law banning their entry to the British Virgin Islands. The 23-year-old "Rasta Law," removed in August, ordered immigration authorities to refuse entry to Rastafarians and "hippies," most commonly identified by their dreadlocks. "I thank (former Chief Minister) Ralph O'Neal for keeping us back for so long because it made us strong to come now," Ras Bobby, a Rastafarian from St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, said late Saturday. O'Neal was the author of the 1980 ordinance and repeatedly refused to lift the ban despite public pressure to do so. The Legislative Council struck the order from the books after a survey determined most islanders were in favor of removing it, officials said. Chief Minister Orlando Smith, who won elections in June, was scheduled to give a speech to open the ninth annual summit of the Barbados-based Caribbean Rastafari Organization on Saturday night in this British Caribbean territory.

U.N. envoy: No timetable for new Afghan government
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) The U.N.'s top Afghanistan envoy said Thursday he can't provide a time frame for finding a political solution that will yield a future government for the war-ravaged country. "I think we will go as fast as it is humanly possible," Lakhdar Brahimi told a news conference. "The people of Afghanistan have responsibilities, we go just as fast as they can themselves." Brahimi, a former Algerian diplomat, is scheduled to head from Islamabad on Friday for Iran, continuing the consultations with Afghanistan's neighbors about forming a government that will include representatives of all the factions and tribes that make up Afghanistan's ethnic patchwork. He also said the "humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is our priority."
