Max Barry's Jennifer Government at times feels like too much filler and not enough fun. At 320 pages, JG should have been edited down to less than half its current length. Doing so would have actually made it about the length of a good screenplay (incidentally, JG has already had its film rights purchased). And JG will make a good film, once a director and a screenwriter strip the novel of its fat. Set in the future, Max Barry envisions a future overrun by "Capitalizm," a paranoid leftist vision of American capitalism that's fun to rant about but doesn't really sustain suspended analysis. The hero of our tale, like every character in the book, has a corporate surname. Thus, readers can guess where Hack Nike works. Hack's been conscripted by two higher-ups at Nike, Guerilla Marketing Operative John Nike and Guerilla Marketing Operative Vice-President John Nike, to help kill ten purchasers of the new Nike Mercurys. It's all done in the name of marketing, and everything done in the world of Capitalizm amounts to hype.
Barry gives an ultra-minimalist description of Hack and the two Johns at least, we know the Johns wear suits. I'm guessing black. You may want to make them navy. But that's the magic of novels, right? We get to use our imaginations. And in JG, a reader needs plenty of imagination, especially when trying to follow the dialogue. In a particularly typical exchange, John and John and Hack are talking about production costs of the new shoes. Hack begins. Someone follows.
