Apes are sometimes confused with monkeys , but unlike their smaller primate counterparts, apes do not have tails and their arms are usually longer than their legs. Apes live in tropical woodlands and forests of Africa and Asia. Despite sharing similar habitats, different ape species show striking differences in behaviors and ways of life.

Gorilla Classification Debate
Western Gorilla Facts
Gorillas live in Central Africa, in the band of forest that spans the equator, stretching from Nigeria in the west to Uganda in the east. There are two major geographic groups of gorillas: Eastern gorillas and Western gorillas. Western gorillas show a variety of genetic, morphological, behavioral and ecological traits that are different from the better known Eastern gorillas, and the two groups are now classified by most scientists as distinct species. The bulk of the western gorilla population is found in the lowland tropical forests of Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville, Cameroon and the Central African Republic, with smaller populations found in Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria. Nigeria is home to the Cross River gorilla, a small isolated population of western gorillas that is thought to number around 200. This population is classified by some scientists as a different subspecies to other western gorillas. The major threat faced by all western gorillas is the commercial bushmeat trade.

44. Dublin Zoo - Come Into The Zoo - World Of Primates - Gorilla
At Dublin Zoo we have a family group of three gorillas; Harry, Lena and their son Kesho. Kesho was born in Feb 1999 and became the
http://www.dublinzoo.ie/come_primates_gorilla.htm
Harry is a fully-grown adult gorilla. Adult males are known as a silverback because of the silvery grey hair on their back. This shows that he is the dominant male. Lena is much smaller than Harry and generally females are only half the size of the males. Gorillas used to be thought of as very aggressive, dangerous animals and films like King Kong did nothing to improve their reputation. However gorillas have been studied and proved to be very gentle and calm. However if he feels threatened a male will stand up and slap his chest with cupped hands whilst roaring. This is just a display intended to frighten away any threat. If this does not work, he will make a bluff charge, rushing towards the intruder but either stopping short or rushing past. Gorillas spend their days at quite a leisurely pace, eating, resting and playing. Gorillas walk on all fours keeping their feet flat and their hands in a fist with all the weight resting on the knuckles. Just before it gets dark gorillas make themselves a night nest on the ground by bending over leafy branches to form a comfortable springy platform. About Dublin Zoo How Can You Help

editLink('skunkworks/.accounts/200310302254') 2004/05/18 13:29:14.999 GMT-4 By Phil Myers Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Subphylum: Vertebrata Class: Mammalia Order: Primates Family: Hominidae Members of this Family Until recently, most classifications included only humans in this family; other apes were put in the family Pongidae (from which the gibbons were sometimes separated as the Hylobatidae). The evidence linking humans to gorillas and chimps has grown dramatically in the past two decades, especially with increased use of molecular techniques. It now appears that chimps, gorillas, and humans form a clade of closely related species; orangutans are slightly less close phylogenetically, and gibbons are a more distant branch. Here we follow a classification reflecting those relationships. Chimps, gorillas, humans, and orangutans make up the family Hominidae; gibbons are separated as the closely related Hylobatidae. Thus constituted, the Hominidae includes 4 genera and 5 species. Its nonhuman members are restricted to equatorial Africa, Sumatra and Borneo. Hominid fossils date to the Miocene and are known from Africa and Asia.

    WHAT IS LANGUAGE
LANGUAGE IN NON-HUMAN SPECIES INTERMEDIATE STAGES BIBLIOGRAPHY ... ANIMAL RIGHTS From Africa to Southeast Asia the worlds great apes are in danger of becoming extinct. The UN is on a mission to save these precious animals, gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and bonobos, from dying off. Great apes still live in 23 countries and experts working to save the last great apes in the wild are hoping to keep it that way.
Conservationists led by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) have launched a global effort to save the great apes from extinction in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. The Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP) targets 23 areas where gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and other primates are near extinction as a result of war, habitat destruction, and poaching for trophies, souvenirs, and meat. It seems grotesque that the peaceful bonobos cannot escape the chaos of civil war in Congo. Pacifism happens to be the principal attribute of bonobos, very unlike their aggressive human relatives. Experts estimates that in five to ten years some of these primates will be extinct across most of their range. Not one species of primates has been lost in the past century, but now 25 species of apes, monkeys, lemurs and other primates are imperiled and may soon disappear.

    Definition -
    Confused or rushed.
Context - They (chimps) interact constantly and the pace can be hectic.
tolerate Definition - To allow or permit. Context - The silverback (gorilla) tolerates the play of the young. 1. Orangutans are orange, but can still hide themselves in the trees. How do they do this? Orangutans’ untidy hair helps them blend in, and they can sit still for hours at a time. Lack of movement helps conceal their location. 2. Why do orangutans move better in trees than on the ground? Orangutans’ feet have long curved toes for holding branches and moving from tree to tree. When they are on the ground, they walk on the edges of their feet and not flat on the ground, which makes walking clumsy. They also don’t have thick skin on the backs of their hands like gorillas and chimps to help them walk on their knuckles. 3. What types of food do orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees eat?

      Three types of primates:
      Prosimians
      Monkeys
      – Old World Monkeys (OWM) and New World Monkeys (NWM)
Apes – lesser apes, great apes, humans
      Habitat:
living primates are naturally found in the tropics (between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn).
the exeptions being humans and macaques.
they are primarily found in tropical rainforests and grasslands (savanas).
Diet: for the most part living primates are omnivorous to some degree. Locomotion: 1. mostly quadrupeds 4 limb locomotion, terrestrial and/or arboreal 2. vertical clinging and leaping (VCL) clinging vertically to tree trunks and branches and leaping to cling too another trunk or branch (vertically) 3. brachiation swinging by arms from below branches 4. bipedalism both habitual (humans) and non-habitual Physical Characteristics: sexual dimorphism the size/ shape difference between males and females. Correlates with group structure, more sexual dimorphism among primates that live in large groups, less among pair-bonded primates. This may be due to competition for and protection of females. Gorillas have the most sexual dimorphism among primates with males reaching over two times the size of females. Group structure: harems, one dominant male and many females.

Ralph E. Taggart, Professor Department of Plant Biology Department of Geological Sciences Michigan State University Evolution of the Order Primates can be traced back to the early Tertiary period and the order is considered to have developed as an offshoot of a group of small, nocturnal, insectivorous mammals known as tree shrews . Several sub-orders are recognized:
    Prosimians
Prosimians represent the least derived group of primates and include lemurs, lorises, and tarsiers. All of these animals are nocturnal and all species are endangered as a result of loss of tropical rain-forest habitat. A lemur ( Propithecus verrauxi ), endemic to the island of Madagascar off the east coast of Africa. Lemurs feature a somewhat elongated snout with minimal overlap of the visual field of its two eyes. Given the general trends in primate evolution, these are considered "primitive" characters. A loris ( Loris tardigradis ) from India. The snout is somewhat elongated (less so than in lorises) and the eyes are rotated toward the front of the face, providing stereoscopic vision. The rain-forests of southeast Asia provide the habitat for many tarsiers, including this one (
