In remote villages, master musicians will teach us their driving rhythms under the jackfruit tree. Nightly, we join in their celebrations and in the mornings we are awakened by bird calls. We partake in magnificent game treks - on foot, via boat, and in 4-wheel drive vehicles - that reveal the flora and fauna of the region, chimpanzees, and a variety of other primates. Tools used by primates
Tool used by primate mammals. Animals can be said to possess a level of cognition based upon their use of tools for problem solving, an endeavor previously considered the sole domain of humans.
"Cognition is the ability to relate different unconnected pieces of information in new ways and apply the resulting knowledge in an adaptive manner" (Boysen, 18). Thus, any individual who exhibits understanding of causal relationships and is able to use that understanding as a means of problem solving, must be defined as cognitive, or thinking. It has long been believed that humans alone dominated the intellectual sphere of thought in the animal kingdom, but research has demonstrated that not only do many other animals, from insect to bird, use and create tools in order to accomplish given tasks, but monkeys and apes, in particular, are able to make use of tools in a "human" manner. This leads to a new understanding of what separates humans and our nearest relatives, and how much separation really exists. It is necessary to define what is meant by "tool-use" in order to examine its existence, and the results, which may be extrapolated by tool-use in animals. A tool is anything not part of the body, which is used to accomplish a given task. This varies from a stick poked by an orangutan into an anthill (in order to obtain ants), to feces flung by a monkey at a predator, to a human shooting a bird with a rifle, to an elephant scratching his flank rubbing up against a tree. Any object, which is taken up or used for the specific purpose of accomplishing a task, is a tool. The presence of need for a tool must also be considered a factor. An ape does not need to store water in containers when water is plentiful, nor will he if there is nothing with which to store the water anyway. One may not discount tools used in captivity, but not in the wild as inconsequential, for they prove that when presented with a potential tool, primates can create an actual tool.

Range and habitat
Gorillas
Gorilla, largest of the great apes and one of the closest living relatives of the human species. Like chimpanzees, orangutans, and other great apes, gorillas are members of the primate order. Monkeys and humans also belong to this order. Until recently, accounts of the gorilla have portrayed a ferocious, powerful beast prone to attacking people. Such descriptions proliferated in various media, a prime example being the American motion-picture classic King Kong (1933). Only after 1960 did evidence emerge, from the field studies of American zoologists George B. Schaller and Dian Fossey, that the gorilla is a relatively gentle vegetarian who attacks only if directly threatened. Fossils and genetic data indicate that the ancestral line of gorillas and chimpanzees split from that of humans about 5 million to 10 million years ago. This divergence occurred far more recently than did the divergence of the line of orangutans, the only great apes of non-African origin. Because of their more recent divergence, gorillas and chimpanzees are more similar to humans than are any other living species. These similarities are apparent in their high intelligence, the shape of their hands and feet, their reproductive physiology, and infant development. Although chimpanzees solve experimental problems more easily than gorillas, gorillas appear to be more adept at acquiring human sign language.

Gorillas
Behavior
Gorillas are chiefly land animals. They walk quadrupedally (using both feet and hands), with the knuckles of the hands carrying the weight of the upper body. In lowland regions with many fruiting trees, gorillas tend to spend more time off the ground, climbing trees and sometimes brachiating (swinging by their arms). Unlike the other great apes, gorillas travel, eat, play, and sleep in stable family groups. These groups may range from several individuals to more than 50, but a typical family consists of one or two adult males, three or four unrelated females, and their young. Gorillas spend much of their day eating, consuming a primarily vegetarian diet of leaves, stems, shoots, and fruit. They travel between feedings, covering a distance of several hundred yards to a mile or more in a day. In lowland forests where gorillas eat a substantial amount of fruit, the slow passage of seeds through their digestive tracts serves an important ecological process: the widespread dispersal and propagation of trees. At dusk a family settles wherever it has finished feeding. Each member constructs its own nest, either on the ground or in a tree, by bending nearby vegetation to form a flexible platform. The home range in which gorillas move, eat, and sleep varies from 5 to 30 sq km (2 to 12 sq mi).

Bushmeat Project: Save the Great Apes
This year a ragged army of 1,500 bushmeat hunters supported by the timber industry infrastructure will illegally shoot and butcher more than 2,000 gorillas and 4,000 chimpanzees in the forest region of west and central Africa. People eat more great apes each year than are now kept in zoos and laboratories in North America. The Bushmeat Project has been established to plan and implement an international programme of community based partnerships that will help the people of Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Central African Republic, and Zaire to develop alternatives to endangered bushmeat.
