Oh, I know that talking about "soul" and "spirituality" is anathema to a good share of the Left. Those terms often are regarded as too new-wavy or are found mostly in the camp of conservative churchgoers. But we need to focus on the moral and spiritual aspect in our politics for a variety of reasons, including helping to re-balance our own souls amidst all the horrors being perpetrated by our so-called leaders. The United States is, and likes to think of itself as, a highly moral country, dedicated to fair play and to the belief that God takes an interest in our democratic experiment. Americans, at heart, want to do the right thing. There is no alternative. Capitalism is the only future. Free markets are the essence of democracy. How do we know? Because we are told repeatedly by smart guys from corporations and government, and by the journalists and academics paid to explain why the smart guys are right. So, are they crazy or just confused? Neither. The POCLAD members are refreshingly clear, and the book of their writings Defying Corporations, Defining Democracy makes a compelling case for their analysis and strategy. The key is that their critique is of the nature of the corporation. They are not simply saying that corporations do bad things or sometimes distort democracy (most liberals and even some conservatives admit that, especially post-Enron). Instead, they argue that the rise of the contemporary corporation has been the death of meaningful democracy. While I think their analysis needs to broaden (more on that later), the POCLAD collective has done an important service by framing the issue of economic justice in a language accessible to people not yet persuaded by a left/progressive analysis. Our wealthy founding father devised a system that allowed them to maintain power by restricting citizenship to propertied white men, and through elite-controlled institutions such as the U.S. Senate and Supreme Court that could corral any wild ideas that regular people might pursue through the relatively more democratic House of Representatives, or state and local governments. Another rally. Another great crowd! This afternoon it was the Wisconsin Democratic state convention. Even before he addressed the convention delegates, Gov. Dean had the delegates on their feet. We held a rally outside of the convention center and 400 people showed up. The weather was perfect and so was the Gov's speech. It's great to watch the Gov. and the crowd feed off of each other. By the end of the speech, the crowd was roaring and the Gov. was waving a giant American flag. All this and he hadn't even given his speech at the convention yet! I was a little worried (although now I wonder why!) that maybe the Gov. gave his best speech at the rally and wouldn't have anything left for the convention, afterall we had gotten up at 5:00am. But, was I ever wrong! He went into the convention hall with the 800 plus delegates and gave a speech that was even better than the one he gave earlier in the day. After his speech we were walking around the hotel and a woman came up to the Gov. and told him that his speech was electric and that "all the energy left the room when he did." I can tell you, that she was not the only person to feel this way.

Informed Comment Thoughts on the Middle East, History,and Religion Juan Cole is Professor of History at the University of Michigan Wednesday, December 31, 2003 Ashcroft Appoints Special Prosecutor in Plame Identity-Disclosure Scandal Attorney-General John Ashcroft recused himself Wednesday in the investigation of the Valerie Plame case, saying he will appoint a special prosecutor. High Bush administration officials broke US law in July of 2003 by revealing to reporter Bob Novak that Valerie Plame, wife of Ambassador Joe Wilson, was an undercover CIA operative. These Bush appointees did untold damage to US intelligence efforts, since they unmasked and put in danger all the contacts and agents overseas who had been known associates of Ms. Plame, an expert in preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction. The officials outed Plame in order to punish her husband, Wilson, for blowing the whistle on the Bush administration, revealing that he had reported to the US government as early as 2002 that the allegations of Iraqi uranium purchases from Niger were false. Bush knows who did this dastardly deed, or could easily find it out. He has declined to demand that these persons resign and turn themselves in. This incident shows how vindictive and petty the Bush administration is, and how utterly unconcerned it is with real national security and weapons proliferation.
