If anything it will give our fans a chance to taste the family style, and see how we fare here in New Mexico against the one and only Champagne. We receive about one hundred calls a day to book the Banquet facility that was, but look forward to showing off the new room. What happens when individuals or whole societies damage or even temporarily lose their soul, their spiritual anchor, their sense of themselves as moral entities?
Oh, I know that talking about "soul" and "spirituality" is anathema to a good share of the Left. Those terms often are regarded as too new-wavy or are found mostly in the camp of conservative churchgoers.
But we need to focus on the moral and spiritual aspect in our politics for a variety of reasons, including helping to re-balance our own souls amidst all the horrors being perpetrated by our so-called leaders.
The United States is, and likes to think of itself as, a highly moral country, dedicated to fair play and to the belief that God takes an interest in our democratic experiment. Americans, at heart, want to do the right thing.
When our society goes outside the boundaries of decent moral behavior as we did with slavery, for example those lapses are regarded as aberrations, correctable as we learn more. We are in another such moment in our history right now, but we can hope that as more and more citizens learn what's really going on behind the scenes, and face our political shadow, the pendulum will begin swinging back the other way if permitted to do so.

review of Defying Corporations, Defining Democracy Edited by Dean Ritz Apex Press 336 pages, $17.95. There is no alternative. Capitalism is the only future. Free markets are the essence of democracy. How do we know? Because we are told repeatedly by smart guys from corporations and government, and by the journalists and academics paid to explain why the smart guys are right. So, are they crazy or just confused? Neither. The POCLAD members are refreshingly clear, and the book of their writings Defying Corporations, Defining Democracy makes a compelling case for their analysis and strategy. The key is that their critique is of the nature of the corporation. They are not simply saying that corporations do bad things or sometimes distort democracy (most liberals and even some conservatives admit that, especially post-Enron). Instead, they argue that the rise of the contemporary corporation has been the death of meaningful democracy. While I think their analysis needs to broaden (more on that later), the POCLAD collective has done an important service by framing the issue of economic justice in a language accessible to people not yet persuaded by a left/progressive analysis. Our wealthy founding father devised a system that allowed them to maintain power by restricting citizenship to propertied white men, and through elite-controlled institutions such as the U.S. Senate and Supreme Court that could corral any wild ideas that regular people might pursue through the relatively more democratic House of Representatives, or state and local governments. Still, the democratic principles on which the country was founded were real, and popular movements over time expanded the franchise and agitated for more democracy.

Have a look at this San Francisco Examiner story about a "race" between the Bay Area's new "express train" (nicknamed the "baby bullet") and a car: It is a $163 million arterial bypass surgery for Peninsula commuters, a slick new set of train engines and passing tracks that will allow commuters to glide past traffic jams between San Francisco and San Jose in under an hour. Or so it was claimed. "All of a sudden, the automobile is going to have competition because the Baby Bullet will get you there faster than driving your own car," said state Sen. Jackie Speier at a kickoff ceremony Friday. Considered the "mother" of the Baby Bullet, she secured $127 million in state funds for the express trains and a new set of tracks to allow them to pass slower trains. Not willing to let such an assertion stand untested, The Examiner challenged Caltrain's Baby Bullet train 373 from San Jose to San Francisco to a race of track versus pavement to see which would get riders up the Peninsula fastest.

USA Today, February 5). The cloaked information posted on a variety of highly trafficked web sites has allegedly included maps, targets, and instructions related to terrorist activities.
Steganography, the ancient practice of concealing information, is a shadowy cousin to the more obvious and well-known practice of encrypting secret messages.
To recover a hidden message posted on the web, the sender must first tell the intended recipient where to find the stego-media; then the recipient can extract the information using the same software that created it. Because intercepting stego-files is so difficult, and dissemination so simple, steganography has become a popular means of communication for those who prefer to fly below the radar, which includes everyone from privacy nuts who stego their regular e-mails, to the terrorists who want to stego-smuggle information around the globe. This is big. There is an official announcement scheduled for some time next week after a couple of more details are worked out, but...
A wealthy Nashville businessman in affiliation with the Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association (PRCA) and Jack Daniel Distillery is finalizing a deal to build a world class rodeo arena and rodeo/cowboy destination attraction in downtown Knoxville.
A large tract of land on Riverside drive near the Dempster's Machine Shop will be the site of the $43 Million attraction. It will feature the largest rodeo arena east of the Rockies, designed to accommodate major rodeo events with seating for 25,000 rodeo fans. It will be a scheduled stop for the worlds biggest rodeo events such as the Wrangler Pro Rodeo Tour, the Dodge National Circuit Rodeo.
In addition, it will be a year-round destination attraction featuring the ProRodeo Hall of Fame East, a rodeo/cowboy museum and hall of fame where fans can learn about the history of rodeo through exhibits and lectures and meet their favorite rodeo cowboys during events. The ProRodeo Hall of Fame East will an extension of the main ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado, and will share moving exhibits and speakers. Additional plans call for a pedestrian walkway linking the attraction to the new Downtown Marriot (formerly Hyatt) and Riverwalk.

Left Field Gold Gloves

by Paul White (Shawnee, KS)
A member of the Society for American Baseball Research more info Left fielders get no respect. At least, that's the case when it comes to defense. Think about it. With the exception of a privileged few, like Barry Bonds , left fielders are always thought of as these massive clods who can't play any other position. Their managers just stick them out in left to keep them from hurting the team and hurting themselves. To most people, Greg Luzinski and Ron Kittle are the prototypes for left fielders. And it isn't just the fans that hold this view; it's the view that is officially condoned by Major League Baseball. The decision years ago to allow Gold Gloves for outfield play to be handed out to any three outfielders, regardless of position, has resulted in left fielders being virtually ignored for their defensive contributions. Year after year, three center fielders are awarded, with an occasional strong-armed right fielder thrown in. In the forty-five seasons that Gold Gloves have been awarded, 135 have been given to American League rs. Just 19 of those went to left fielders, and never more than one in any year. Of those, 15 are accounted for by just four men -

It may be unseemly to toot my own horn, but yet again your very own hard-working pundit has found himself at the vanguard, ahead of the mainstream press. On this occasion, the copycats are jumping on the anti- "Make no mistake" bandwagon, which I began assembling single-handedly last year. From yesterday's Slate.com But Dubya's greatest influence on the way the rest of us speak may be his overuse of the easy-to-pronounce rhetorical phrase, "make no mistake." I do not count myself among those who hate President Bush. But I do hate the expression, "make no mistake... It must be stopped. Please join Chatterbox in silent protest. Sometime today, make a mistake. Any mistake. You'll be surprised at how good it feels.

Another state. Another rally. Another great crowd! This afternoon it was the Wisconsin Democratic state convention. Even before he addressed the convention delegates, Gov. Dean had the delegates on their feet. We held a rally outside of the convention center and 400 people showed up. The weather was perfect and so was the Gov's speech. It's great to watch the Gov. and the crowd feed off of each other. By the end of the speech, the crowd was roaring and the Gov. was waving a giant American flag. All this and he hadn't even given his speech at the convention yet! I was a little worried (although now I wonder why!) that maybe the Gov. gave his best speech at the rally and wouldn't have anything left for the convention, afterall we had gotten up at 5:00am. But, was I ever wrong! He went into the convention hall with the 800 plus delegates and gave a speech that was even better than the one he gave earlier in the day. After his speech we were walking around the hotel and a woman came up to the Gov. and told him that his speech was electric and that "all the energy left the room when he did." I can tell you, that she was not the only person to feel this way.

Roundup of "undead" stories?
While I am very skeptical of conspiracy theories, the fact is that occasionally, there are unexplained conspiracies. By definition, unexplained conspiracies (until they are explained) logically demand the utilization of (for lack of a better phrase) conspiracy theories as a tool of examination. There is no question that terrorism whether domestic or international always involves a conspiracy. In attempting to analyze unsettled and vexing stories, I try to avoid the following common pitfalls:
  • the temptation of believing what I want to believe the temptation of disbelieving (denying) what I don't want to believe the temptation of clinging too tenaciously to my own conclusions (if any) the temptation of being adversely influenced by emotions instead of logic (loud and ugly tones, or harsh rhetoric make me distrustful; reasonable tones engender trust and can create illusions of truth)
  • With that in mind, I want to briefly examine (and provide a roundup of stories on) topic which Glenn Reynolds called the "potential for cooperation between Arab terrorists and domestic extremists."

"If you can't do the time, don't do the crime." That bit of wisdom is usually offered to the bad guys on television cop shows. But it also applies to rookie home buyers as well. If you don't want to wait months or even years to get into your first house, then don't just keep your nose clean, keep your credit clean, too. While bogus credit score improvement offers and credit repair firms would like you to believe that fixing up a history full of late and missed payments is a slam-dunk cinch, they are just that, bogus.

Ashcroft Appoints Special Prosecutor in Plame Identity-Disclosure Scandal
Attorney-General John Ashcroft recused himself Wednesday
in the investigation of the Valerie Plame case, saying he will appoint a special prosecutor. High Bush administration officials broke US law in July of 2003 by revealing to reporter Bob Novak that Valerie Plame, wife of Ambassador Joe Wilson, was an undercover CIA operative. These Bush appointees did untold damage to US intelligence efforts, since they unmasked and put in danger all the contacts and agents overseas who had been known associates of Ms. Plame, an expert in preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction. The officials outed Plame in order to punish her husband, Wilson, for blowing the whistle on the Bush administration, revealing that he had reported to the US government as early as 2002 that the allegations of Iraqi uranium purchases from Niger were false.
Bush knows who did this dastardly deed, or could easily find it out. He has declined to demand that these persons resign and turn themselves in. This incident shows how vindictive and petty the Bush administration is, and how utterly unconcerned it is with real national security and weapons proliferation.
