It had huge battles, a variety of equipment and it involved just about every nation in some way or another. Many of the battles were straightforward, and unlike the current geopolitical situation it seemed easy to tell who were the good guys and bad guys. Until now the Special Forces line from Plan B Toys has stayed with modern units and equipment, ones that have gotten more than their share of use in the real world over the last decade. With the first series of WW2 figures, they are delving into some of the elite units on both sides with the same attention to detail and authenticity. Before we get into the units covered in WW2 Series, there are some important things to keep in mind about the units that inspired these figures. All the units share some traits with modern special forces. They are all highly motivated and volunteers to the last. No one is in a special forces unit who doesn't want to be, one the reasons former Minnesota Governor (and SEAL) Jesse Ventura went for the elite unit - the guy next to you who may save your life wants to be there. This isn't to say that no special forces personnel are drafted - some were - but you had to volunteer further to enter these elite units. All the soldiers are highly disciplined and have to pass extremely difficult physical and even more difficult mental tests. The plan behind Special Forces is to provide historically accurate figures of famous (or infamous) military units, complete with appropriate weaponry and dress. The line is built around a 6" scale, so the figures fit in with most modern action figure lines like Toy Biz's Marvel Legends and Mattel's Batman figures. All the lines have removable and interchangeable heads and equipment, so you can mix and match to create many more different soldiers.

I began working on "A Tribute to Survival" in 1990 and little did I know to what extent I would be asked to perform such duties as stalking junkyards with a screwdriver and hammer looking for car logos, such as "Thunderbird" and "Cheyenne", in the pouring rain, or calling around asking if shops carried white or brown wooden eggs. A mong my many responsibilities during the progression of the exhibit was photographic research. One aspect of the exhibit was to focus on Native American veterans. I found almost nothing on this subject. This was disturbing to me. After all, I even knew about the Navajo Code Talkers in WWII and that Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian, was one of the men to raise the flag on Iwo Jima. I was expecting to find books, articles, and photographs galore. I found so little that I became obsessed (This is a side effect of the profession). I wrote to veterans organizations, history museums, military museums and most times I received nothing. I searched Indian newspapers and followed personal leads. After a year, I managed to accumulate a small, but significant, stack of material. O n a weekly basis I would open the file drawer and ask myself, "Now what am I going to do with this?". The material continuously haunted me. I was reluctant to begin writing; I kept procrastinating and I didn't know why. One day I was looking at a photograph of Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr., a Winnebago Indian from Wisconsin who was the only Native American to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Korean War. And then it finally dawned on me. The files, pamphlets, books and photos were only part of the picture. Somehow the human element was missing (maybe I've been working with objects too long because as an anthropologist, this should have occurred to me earlier). If I really wanted to know about this I had to go the Native American veterans themselves.

If you already agree with that statement, this book will be fun for you, and you can skip the rest of the review. If you've never read Mr. Savage's sex advice column or his other books (one of which is just a collection of advice columns), here's the scoop. He's a funny, uninhibited, liberal gay man with a fair amount of common sense, a lot of opinions and he expresses himself remarkably well. If you are offended by the sort of person who enjoys picking on Bill Bennet, or the sort of person who will mention sex acts in a description of foreign policy, you should pass on this one. This is Dan's answer to Bennett's Slouching Toward Gomorrah in much the way that Ruch Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot is Al Franken's answer to Rush Is Right . The idea is that Dan will go out and commit each of the 7 Deadly Sins, and write a chapter about it. Which is what he does, in the same way that what he does each month is write a syndicated sex column. That is to say, it provides a basic structure that he violates whenever he has something else to say. Dan writes well enough that this works, but I suspect that most writers shouldn't try it at home. My wife has only a passing interest in my gaming hobbies; about the same level that I share with her interest in tennis. As spouses, we respect each other's tastes and have a genuine interest in seeing the other succeed in our chosen hobby. The question might just as easily be asked of someone who enjoys another hobby: why do it? I certainly don't think any of those hobbies or interests sound fun, yet millions of people enjoy them.
