    Why Southerners make good Marines
It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much.. We go on "route" marches with the Platoon Sergeant who says they're long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it is not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore
feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice, but awful flat. The Sergeant is like a schoolteacher. He nags some. The Capt. is like the

Sad because it is so true - I for the life of me cant see any of the city-slicker, liberal-lefty raised folks l iving in my town of Ann Arbor, Mi, being able to withstand the rigors of training, or i wonder if t hey have the patriotism necessary to take up arms on behalf out our country. While these black-beret wearing effete leftists sit in the coffeeshops and discuss why the USA is the "terrorist nation", the good 'ole boys will be doing the right t hing, keeping America safe from the likes of bin-Ladin and Saddam and Kim il-Jong.

    World War II Special Forces
    Action Figures
World War 2 is often considered the 'last good war' for many reasons. It had huge battles, a variety of equipment and it involved just about every nation in some way or another. Many of the battles were straightforward, and unlike the current geopolitical situation it seemed easy to tell who were the good guys and bad guys. Until now the Special Forces line from Plan B Toys has stayed with modern units and equipment, ones that have gotten more than their share of use in the real world over the last decade. With the first series of WW2 figures, they are delving into some of the elite units on both sides with the same attention to detail and authenticity. Before we get into the units covered in WW2 Series, there are some important things to keep in mind about the units that inspired these figures. All the units share some traits with modern special forces. They are all highly motivated and volunteers to the last. No one is in a special forces unit who doesn't want to be, one the reasons former Minnesota Governor (and SEAL) Jesse Ventura went for the elite unit - the guy next to you who may save your life wants to be there. This isn't to say that no special forces personnel are drafted - some were - but you had to volunteer further to enter these elite units. All the soldiers are highly disciplined and have to pass extremely difficult physical and even more difficult mental tests. The plan behind Special Forces is to provide historically accurate figures of famous (or infamous) military units, complete with appropriate weaponry and dress. The line is built around a 6" scale, so the figures fit in with most modern action figure lines like Toy Biz's Marvel Legends and Mattel's Batman figures. All the lines have removable and interchangeable heads and equipment, so you can mix and match to create many more different soldiers.

The Charge Substitute flick for our viewing edification! Opening Statement The highly anticipated fourth installment in the long-running, critically acclaimed, boffo box office smash Substitute film series, The Substitute 4: Failure is Not an Option brings a dramatic, darker edge to its shopworn teach-and-pummel mix, acting as a prescient cautionary tale tracing the trail of the extremist hate movement plaguing today's narrow, weak-minded yet impressionable youth. How's that for overblown hyperbole? Just how bad can this direct-to-video production be? Remember folks, there is a '4' in the title up there. Is that ever a good thing? Facts of the Case In a brief yet muddled pre-credits opening sequence, mercenary-for-hire Karl Thomasson (Treat Williams), seemingly engaged in some covert mano-a-mano combat with unnamed guerrillas in an Argentinean warzone, kills his youthful quarry. I guess this confusing sequence is included to show that Thomasson is equal parts lean, mean killing machine and kind, concerned man with a heavy, compassionate heart for young, impressionable soldiers willing to die needlessly for their cause. Flash forward to the conveniently named "Military Academy of the South." Thomasson, now retired from active military duty, poses as a substitute military history teacher to investigate the diabolical Commandant Brack (played by the wonderfully named Patrick Kilpatrick—

    Is here
The U.S. economy grew at an 8.2 percent annual rate in the third quarter, faster than the government initially estimated as companies boosted inventories in September to meet the surge in demand. The nation's gross domestic product, the value of all goods and services produced, grew from July through September at the fastest pace since the first three months of 1984, when Ronald Reagan was president. The Commerce Department previously reported a 7.2 percent third-quarter growth rate, following a 3.3 percent pace in the second quarter. Growth is now super-super strong compared to super strong ,'' said Joseph LaVorgna, senior U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank Securities, whose forecast of 8.3 percent was the highest in a Bloomberg News survey.

    Native Americans
Wisconsin Warriors: Interviews with Native American Veterans
    by Dawn Scher Thomae
    EDITOR'S NOTE:
V ery few people really know what goes on behind the scenes during the development of a major exhibit. I began working on "A Tribute to Survival" in 1990 and little did I know to what extent I would be asked to perform such duties as stalking junkyards with a screwdriver and hammer looking for car logos, such as "Thunderbird" and "Cheyenne", in the pouring rain, or calling around asking if shops carried white or brown wooden eggs. A mong my many responsibilities during the progression of the exhibit was photographic research. One aspect of the exhibit was to focus on Native American veterans. I found almost nothing on this subject. This was disturbing to me. After all, I even knew about the Navajo Code Talkers in WWII and that Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian, was one of the men to raise the flag on Iwo Jima. I was expecting to find books, articles, and photographs galore. I found so little that I became obsessed (This is a side effect of the profession). I wrote to veterans organizations, history museums, military museums and most times I received nothing. I searched Indian newspapers and followed personal leads. After a year, I managed to accumulate a small, but significant, stack of material. O n a weekly basis I would open the file drawer and ask myself, "Now what am I going to do with this?". The material continuously haunted me. I was reluctant to begin writing; I kept procrastinating and I didn't know why. One day I was looking at a photograph of Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr., a Winnebago Indian from Wisconsin who was the only Native American to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Korean War. And then it finally dawned on me. The files, pamphlets, books and photos were only part of the picture. Somehow the human element was missing (maybe I've been working with objects too long because as an anthropologist, this should have occurred to me earlier). If I really wanted to know about this I had to go the Native American veterans themselves.

    So Confused!!
Help me figure this out.... According to the Senator from WA, the reason Osama is loved is because he does all sorts of good works. And if we were more like him, they'd love us to. Does that about cover it? Okay, so how come three doctors, Americans, doing good works for the poor in Yemen were slaughtered? According to Patty Murray, being nice to the poor deranged Islamofascists is the key, and yet, those same people murdered three American doctors. I'm so confused! Maybe Senator Murray can explain it to me....

Being On The Wrong Side Of History Won’t Be Pretty
The latest from VDH: Iraqi Aftershocks .... How strange that increasingly Russians, Indians, and eastern Europeans — not our more natural allies, Frenchmen or Germans — are now more popular with us. Indeed, for all the grand idealism of Kyoto, Durban, and the ICC, Americans accept that in the past western Europeans would have cold-heartedly sold out Taiwan, Israel, or South Korea in any major confrontation in which democracy and sacrifice on the one side were pitted against autocracy, profit, and appeasement on the other. So Iraq is not merely a referendum on European-American relations, but rather a litmus test of the moral status of Europe itself, and of what side of history it wishes to be on. Let us hope it awakens from its ethical coma to take its rightful place at the vanguard of the war against barbarity. The American left has missed yet another train as it was leaving. Currently it is reeling from an array of staggering developments that in the post-Cold War era threaten to leave it as discredited as segregationist Republicans were during the civil-rights movement. Anti-Semitism is suddenly more commonly a phenomenon of the academic Left than of the old, white, Neanderthal Right. Multiculturalism and cultural equivalence have been refuted by the ghoulish nature of the Taliban; the more the world learns about the "alternative" universe of Saddam Hussein and kindred Middle Eastern regimes, the more it shudders in horror.

that brett favre has become one of the most universally liked guys in public life has a lot to do with the passion he brings to every game he plays, every play he makes. This fact is lost on him; in his world that's just what athletes are supposed to do. As he puts it: "I go through life saying, What can I do on the football field to make people say, 'Now, that guy's good. Not just because he can throw touchdown passes but because he's a great leader, he busted his ass, he was always there, you could always depend on him, he was tough'?" In 12 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Favre has known as much pain and glory as any athlete of his generation. So when he found himself living out a personal tragedy in front of the entire nation in December his father, Big Irv, had died unexpectedly of a heart attack a little more than 24 hours before Green Bay was to play a critical Monday night game in Oakland's notorious "Black Hole" was anybody surprised that he decided that not playing wasn't an option? Was it any surprise that he ended up putting on the single best performance of the year, a game that would pass immediately into legend? In a word, no.

Skipping Toward Gomorrah , Dan Savage
I like Dan Savage. If you already agree with that statement, this book will be fun for you, and you can skip the rest of the review. If you've never read Mr. Savage's sex advice column or his other books (one of which is just a collection of advice columns), here's the scoop. He's a funny, uninhibited, liberal gay man with a fair amount of common sense, a lot of opinions and he expresses himself remarkably well. If you are offended by the sort of person who enjoys picking on Bill Bennet, or the sort of person who will mention sex acts in a description of foreign policy, you should pass on this one. This is Dan's answer to Bennett's Slouching Toward Gomorrah in much the way that Ruch Limbaugh Is A Big Fat Idiot is Al Franken's answer to Rush Is Right . The idea is that Dan will go out and commit each of the 7 Deadly Sins, and write a chapter about it. Which is what he does, in the same way that what he does each month is write a syndicated sex column. That is to say, it provides a basic structure that he violates whenever he has something else to say. Dan writes well enough that this works, but I suspect that most writers shouldn't try it at home. Skipping is a series of vignettes that will leave you chuckling and thinking for a while. Assuming you're still reading the review, buy it and enjoy.

I suppose that each gamer has his own motivation. For me, it's a combination of fun, greater challenge, and love of history. I'm not exactly sure why wargames are fun. Anyone who shares an interest in the hobby will probably concede that fun is at least part of their interest. It may be as simple an explanation that what bores some folks is fun to others. My wife has only a passing interest in my gaming hobbies; about the same level that I share with her interest in tennis. As spouses, we respect each other's tastes and have a genuine interest in seeing the other succeed in our chosen hobby. The question might just as easily be asked of someone who enjoys another hobby: why do it? I certainly don't think any of those hobbies or interests sound fun, yet millions of people enjoy them.
