Rumsfeld fears U.S. losing long-term fight against terror "The troubling unknown, he said, is whether the extremists whom he termed 'zealots and despots' bent on destroying the global system of nation-states are turning out newly trained terrorists faster than the United States can capture or kill them. 'It's quite clear to me that we do not have a coherent approach to this,' Rumsfeld said at an international security conference." Someone slipped Rummy a Red Pill. Genre: Mystery Thriller Length: 2 hrs. MPAA Rating "R" FILM CREDITS Starring: Directed by: Produced by: Written by: Distributor: Warner Brothers I t's funny how some movies can be totally unengaging and yet somewhat interesting at the same time. Such a movie is Murder By Numbers , a film about teenage thrill-killers. Like Alfred Hitchkock's Rope , the film is about two intellectual young men in a homo-erotically charged relationship who are out to prove to themselves and to others that they are above the moral and criminal law. Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt) and Richard Hayward (Ryan Gosling of the controversial film, The Believers ) are teenagers who are too smart for their loveless, meaningless lives. To bring meaning to their lives, they plot a random murder. Being modern murderers, they are aware of all facets of forensics. They enjoy the game of murder and detective work hence the titles murder by numbers. Their only joy is the joy of manipulating the detectives, Sam (Ben Chaplin) and Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock). But unknown to them, they are not up against a regular (read: sane) detective. They are pitted against the obsessive and troubled Cassie who "identifies" with the victim. We know these two will be brought to justice. We know Cassie has some heavy emotional issues. But hey, this is a Hollywood picture. We also know that all will be well in two hours.

Carol Moseley-Braun's participation in the Democratic primaries provides the first opportunity to observe how African American and non-Black politicians operate when more than one Black is on the presidential ballot. In coming months we will discover a great deal about the workings of the Democratic Party, the corporate media, and the primary electorate. The two Black candidates are already well known. Rev. Al Sharpton brings with him all of the skills - and baggage - of three-plus tumultuous decades of civil rights struggles. Carol Moseley Braun will forever be connected to the superlative of "first" Black female U.S. Senator (1992 - 98), a post in which she managed to make even less noise than did Republican Edward Brooke (R-MA, 1966 - 78), the first Black to serve in that body since Reconstruction. Brooke was known as the "quiet man" of the Senate, who eschewed anything that smacked of political "posturing." During her six years in the Senate, Moseley-Braun's profile was near invisible.

I just watched the Nick Berg decapitation video. I watched it three times. I downloaded it, and I intend to watch it again and again and again. I am going to watch it until I am sure that I will never again forget the difference between Good and Evil. Now I am going to run my mouth and hope it does some good. I got the sense that people from that earlier generation feel that they saved us and failed us at the same time. They saved us by winning the war, but they failed us in allowing us to forget why they were willing to fight and die for you and me in such numbers. They talked about signing up for the Army the day after Pearl Harbor, how there was no doubt in their minds about what they were doing, no one questioning the rightness of their cause or suggesting that the US deserved what happened to us that day. On a trip from San Diego to Washington, I stopped at the Air Museum in Tillamook OR. Do yourself a favor and visit the place if you ever are in the area. It is inside a huge Blimp Hanger where Blimps were stored between missions patrolling the Pacific Coast during the early days of WWII. It is next to an airfield where an F-14 that was donated to the museum blew a tire trying to stop on their 500 ft runway. They made it. Inside that museum, there are aircraft and other displays that do a very good job reminding visitors of the sacrifices made by those who came before us.

Oh! What a Tangled Web we Weave........ It is now nearly the end of July and the so-called "War in Iraq" has been officially declared at an end, despite the fact that on average, at least two US soldiers have been killed by armed Islamic Ba'athist partisans each week subsequent to Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's formal announcement of an end to hostilities. To my great frustration (and doubtless to the relief of covert domestic surveillance analysts who keep tabs on websites like this...or am I inflating my own self-importance rather too grandiosely?), the server that formerly supported this website crashed in the middle of May, taking me effectively off the etherwaves at the least "Gulf War II...The Sequel!", but being of Irish heritage and inherently obsessed with such trivial things as moral rectitude and right-thinking, right-doing, reflectively viewed life, I have elected to continue sharing my opinions on the subject of the 'New American Imperialism.' Although unable to pour my frustrations out onto the electronic page as is my usual wont, I have spent the past two months engaging in some enlightening reading. Chief among these latest books are three that I feel should be on everyone's reading list who is seriously concerned about the present and ongoing transformation of America from the world's most successful democracy into a dangerously duplicitous capitalistic 'imperial superpower': 1) The Best Democracy Money Can Buy , by Greg Palast (ISBN: 0-452-28391-4), Feb 2003; 2)

News Chains
Literal and Euphemistic
By Cheryl Seal 10 July 2003 About 30 years ago, after the nation emerged from the nasty pit that was the McCarthy era, the news media was a most effective guardian angel and watchdog, making sure those other so-called guardian angels -the government, military and police- did not slide too far into corruption. The bad guys, like cockroaches, quivered at the idea of having 'the news' put a spotlight on them. Nixon, with all his multi-tentacle power, was no match for Woodward and Bernstein. The 'Masters of War' seeking to keep the Vietnam war going were no match for Bruce Morton, Walter Cronkite, or the photojournalists at Life Magazine (who made sure the nation saw the faces of the boys killed month after month, in a silently eloquent photo spread). Alas, the spotlight is no longer a motivating threat to the bad guys, because the bad guys now control the spotlight. How did this sorry situation come about? As I see it, there are five key factors responsible for setting the stage was set for this catastrophe:

TOC Whither Our Fox - Part 2
Whil Hentzen

Published in FoxTalk March 2001
In 1994, as VFP 3.0 was being released, Lisa Slater, the editor of FoxTalk at the time, wrote an editorial entitled "Whither Our Fox" and in it wondered where we were heading. Microsoft had purchased Fox Software a couple years earlier, and the developer community was using FoxBase, FoxPro 1.0, FoxPro 2.0, and FoxPro 2.x (for Windows, DOS, Mac, and UNIX). Today, we're at another turning point. In case you haven't heard, VFP 7.0 has been pulled from Visual Studio.NET and will be a separate product, developed, marketed, and shipped on its own. So, what does that mean? Whil Hentzen explains.

Fact One: Visual FoxPro 7.0 Beta 2 was released in early March. Fact Two: Most people on the beta so far have said that Beta 1 was so stable that it could have been shipped as the final release. Fact Three: Visual FoxPro 7.0 will ship this spring, by itself.
Fact Four: VFP 7 will be included in MSDN, as it's always been. Fact Five: VFP 7 will continue to reside in the Developer Tools division at Microsoft. Fact Six: Robert Green will continue to split his duties, heading Fox marketing as well as Visual Studio.NET. And Ricardo Wenger will continue to lead the product team.
Fact Seven: There have already been discussions about the feature set in VFP 8. Fact Eight: The folks who have been claiming that Microsoft was going to kill FoxPro—since 1992—have now been doing so for nine years. (You just gotta pity them, sort of like Cubs fans, don't you?)

The difficulty for someone sitting a long distance away is to judge who really is the more accurate. Earlier this month I decided to take a closer look at the relevant figures.

With all this going on, where's the first place you'd think to fly off to? Why, to the mall of course. If you're not going to blow up the White House a la , I suppose the next best thing is to send a marauding alien soaring through that most sacred of public spaces, the mall. It's this kind of uninspired high concept that pops up again and again in Evolution , Ivan Reitman's second DreamWorks project (the first was Road Trip , which he executive produced). 15 September 2001 This week's incredible apocalyptic images of death and destruction have had a historically unprecedented impact on the American psyche, not to mention signaling huge changes in the nature of international relations and basic definitions of war and peace. Certainly there has never been a single day in my life span bringing with it such a fundamental divide between past and future. Even Pearl Harbor Day, which is being widely cited as a parallel, pales in comparison. At least there it was clear who did the deed and FDR knew immediately what had to be done. I was sitting in the lounge of the Manila Elks Club Wednesday (Tuesday, the ill-fated September 11th in the states), watching Armageddon unfolding on CNN along with other stunned Yankee ex-pats. The images were hypnotic, shocking, and upsetting for all, leading more than a few folks to switch from coffee to stronger libations by early afternoon. I myself opted for Jack Daniels on the rocks, a drink which I nurtured as I tried to sort out my own feelings and assess what these unbelievable events really meant - for America, for the international community, for the Philippines, and for myself. While I failed to come up with definitive answers, following are a few free associations reflecting the themes that rumbled through my troubled mind that evening (and that have haunted my dreams in the intervening few days).

"PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING IS REAL!"
by Stanley L. Morris
(NOTE: If you believe the veracity of the title above, you are in deep trouble, my friend.)
On just about every TV screen across the land, at some time or other, you cannot help but see two or more massive bodies throwing each other down upon, across, and even out of the ring. These melodramatic characters put on quite a show as they prance, strut, taunt, yell, and generally over-act their predictable roles of "good guys" and "bad guys." There is always a villain; the crowd hisses at him. He is pitted against an all-American hero; the crowd always cheers for him. And, finally, there is a totally inept "referee" who can neither "see" the "cheating" that is going on "behind his back" nor can he prevent matters from "getting out of hand." Soon, varying degrees of mayhem ensue. As strange as it may seem, their audiences really eat this up. Judging from the sheer volume of TV time that is devoted to "rasslin'" a sort of "planned" entertainment it must be quite lucrative for all the promoters and the "athletes." People pay big bucks to see these bigger-than-life human caricatures act out their collective fantasies. And, they have the names to go with it too "Gorgeous" George, "Haystack" Calhoun (from a different era), "Hulk" Hogan, Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, Sergeant Slaughter, et al. I'm sure that you know more about them (more than you would care to know; they are hard to ignore!). They've also got butchy, hair-pulling "ladies," midgets, tag teams, battle royales, chains, cages, bent metal chairs, fake blood, and every kind of gaudy costume imaginable.

References: Attached [2] Email from Col Carl Bernard (USA-Ret), Can Serbia Tolerate Bombing?, 28 March 1999. Attached This message is the first in a series of occasional comments about events in Kosovo. The news coming out of Kosovo is not good. A front page report in today's New York Times indicates that NATO's response to the deteriorating situation in Kosovo is break Milosovic's "will" by increasing the list "strategic" targets in Serbia, to include headquarters in Belgrade, or put another way, to escalate a strategy that is clearly not producing its predicted effects. Ominously, the Times also reported that "the air operations will FALL SHORT [emphasis added] of the Phase 3 plan that the United States had wanted to carry out. Some of Yugoslavia's military-industrial complex and infrastructure north of the 44th parallel will remain off-limits for now. Inside Versailles on the Potomac, the emergence of a public targeting debate is one of a growing number of signs that bureaucrats and politicians have begun to use the press to position themselves to shift the blame for, or exploit the possibilities of, a possible debacle.

Evaluating Non-Profit Communications Initiatives
Evaluating Non-Profit Communications Initiatives is a wonderful paper by a lot of heavy hitters in communicaiton and communication theory folks. The paper is very interesting ( I really like the focus on "media trigger events") in context of "awareness communicaitons" . The frame work falls short in that it does not look at communicaitons campaigns "in battle" with an opposition campaign (most of the work we do). However, it is definately worth a read. This Working Paper suggests that evaluating media campaigns is often a multi-phase effort, with no single "roadmap." However, numerous guideposts can be observed, as detailed here.
