History - Tradition of Program Tradition of Program Year-by-Year Letterwinners Coaches ... Roster by Hometown Records: Low Rounds Season Averages Big Ten / NCAA All-Americans ... Honors
The sport of men's golf has been a staple in Indiana University athletics. The Hoosiers began competing in the 1920s and made their first appearance at the Big Ten Championships in 1922. Success has followed the Hoosiers over the course of the last 80 years and IU's tradition in men's golf is as prestigious as any Big Ten school.
"Having grown up in Evansville, it was a life-long dream to attend Indiana University. The important thing, upon visiting the campus and meeting Coach Bob Fitch, was the emphasis he placed on meeting academic standards.
"The term 'student-athlete' meant just thata student first and an athlete second. I learned much more at Indiana University than merely marketing, my major. Coach Fitch impressed upon the team life's most important values: Honesty, Integrity, and Honor, all vitally important.

History - Tradition of Program Tradition of Program Year-by-Year Letterwinners Coaches ... Roster by Hometown Records: Low Rounds Season Averages Big Ten / NCAA All-Americans ... Honors
The Hoosiers have been a dominant force in the Big Ten since the conference's first official championship tournament in 1982. That first year Indiana finished seventh, but since then has finished lower than third just three times. The Hoosiers have won seven Big Ten crowns, second in the conference to Ohio State's ten. In fact, the Hoosiers have placed either first or second in 13 of the last 16 championships and have finished in the top three an amazing 19 of 23 years.
"I really loved Indiana University's campus when I visited IU. I met coach Carmichael and I really liked him and felt he would make me the player I wanted to be. I've always dreamed of playing professionally, and without coach Carmichael, I wouldn't be where I am today. He is the greatest golf coach ever and I cannot say enough good things about him. He is in my mind, without a doubt, the best golf coach ever. While at Indiana, coach spent so much time with me while I was playing. He dedicated himself to make sure that I became the best student, the best athlete, and the best person that I could be. My time at Indiana included some of the best memories I have and if I had it all to do over again I would not change a thing."

The Official Site of The Masters golf Tournament, 2004. Learn about Masters history, past Masters golf champions, and the history of August National golf Club.
http://www.masters.org/en_US/history/
Looking to provide a service to golf by hosting a tournament, Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts decided to hold an annual event beginning in 1934. The final decision was made at a meeting in New York at the office of member W. Alton Jones. Roberts proposed the event be called the Masters Tournament, but Bobby Jones objected thinking it too presumptuous. The name Augusta National Invitation Tournament was adopted and the title was used for five years until 1939 when Jones relented and the name was officially changed. An early decision was whether Jones would play or serve as an official. Jones preferred not to compete but was persuaded by the Club's members to join the field. In the nine pre-war Tournaments when Jones played, 12 overall, his best finish was 13th in 1934.
Many decisions made in the early days of the Tournament remain today. Among these are the four-day stroke playing of 18 holes each day instead of the then customary 36 holes on the third day, eliminating qualifying rounds, and denying permission for anyone except the player and caddie to be in the playing area. A complimentary pairing sheet and a spectator booklet were provided, and commercialization in any form of the Tournament was limited.
The first Tournament was held March 22, 1934, and beginning in 1940, the Masters was scheduled each year during the first full week in April. That first Tournament was won by Horton Smith, and in the Fall of 1934 the nines were reversed. In 1935 Gene Sarazen hit "the shot heard 'round the world" scoring a double eagle on the par 5 15th hole, tying Craig Wood and forcing a playoff. Sarazen won the 36-hole playoff the following day by five strokes. In 1942 Byron Nelson defeated Ben Hogan 69-70 in an 18-hole playoff and the Tournament was not played the following three years, 1943, 1944 and 1945, during the war. To assist the war effort, cattle and turkeys were raised on the Augusta National grounds.

The Hook A Kid On Golf Tee Level Clinic that they participated in was one of hundreds that will be conducted across the country this summer. The introductory clinics, which have been held at all types of golf facilities since 1990, open the door for underprivileged youngsters to learn and play the game who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity due to obstacles like cost and lack of equipment. Most youngsters are able to tee it up at no cost thanks in large part to grants from the United States Golf Association. Besides contributing an annual $100,000 grant, the USGA provided an additional $25,000 in matching grant funds this year.
