Palmer, Player, Nicklaus, Watson, Faldo and Woods. PRE 1400: THE ORIGINS OF THE GAME Throughout recorded history, every civilisation has played a game with a club and a ball. Pangea for example, as described by Roman scribes, would appear to be the father both of modern hockey and the Celtic games of Shinty and Hurling. In one form or another, the variant games of present day golf were clearly enjoyed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. The game persisted over the centuries and the form that it took and rules that were applied varied as widely as the terrain the game was played over. In short, the game consisted of knocking a ball from one pre-designated place to another where the ball was to be struck off a predetermined object in the least number of blows. Games often extended from village to village.

Secretary/Manager's Welcome. Dornoch is considered the finest northerly course in the world, and no other course offers as delicious a feeling of getting away from it all or better provides the pieces of natural seaside beauty , challenge and enjoyment and shot values.
Have a look at both our Gallery and
After the second hole at Royal Dornoch, you round a corner past a hedge and golfing heaven breaks loose. Holes are visible everywhere, the North Sea frames the right, mountains are ahead and hills lie to your left. You'll see people walking their dogs, cycling or wandering along a path up above. In late April and May the banks of whins are a carpet of yellow. Although it's a private course, Dornoch sits on public land, meaning that visitors are welcome.
The fairways are inviting as they ramble this way and that, and golfers may feel encouraged to take a big swing and still stay on course. But simply hitting the fairway is rarely enough. It's no good, for instance, to hit the right side of the fairway on "Foxy," the par-four, 445-yard 14th hole, because the green isn't visible from there. It's hidden behind a sand hill that cuts into the fairway. Better to drive down the left side, then try to contrive a shot that finds the green, which is set on a precipice at nearly 90 degrees to the fairway.

"Having played the Old Course many times since my first visit in 1981, I am now of the opinion it is one of the best and most beautiful tests of links golf anywhere in the world." Tom Watson - Millennium Captain Ballybunion Golf Club
Placing golf courses in any kind of order of merit is a highly subjective process. But if sheer pleasure is the yardstick then Ballybunion gets my vote as the best course in the world. For scenic beauty, peace, playing conditions and the rich golfing quality and challenge of nearly every hole it is supreme. Peter Dobereiner This is Ballybunion Golf Club: Thankful for the priceless gift of dunesland that nature has bestowed on it; Proud of its origins and past; Humble in realising that it must ever advance hand-in-hand with Father Time in outlook and development; And ever a cordial host to visitors from near and far. For every golfer, the name St. Andrews has a certain magic and brings tingles to the spine. This is the beginnings of the game and the true Home of Golf, where the game has been played for more than 600 years the entirety of its history. Today, the old grey cathedral city of St. Andrews owns and operates five separate 18-hole courses within the town limits; The New Course, dating from 1895; The Jubilee Course opened in 1897; The Eden, built in 1914 and the most recent edition, The Strathtyrum. Then there is the granddaddy of them all and the one golfers come from around the globe to experience: the world-famous St. Andrews Old Course. The Old Course is truly, hallowed ground and to walk its fairways is to walk in the footsteps of every great name the game has ever known. This is the course that has hosted more British Open Championships than any other and has crowned champions such as Tom Morris, James Braid, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods and a host of other equally famous names.

History of The World Ice Golf Championship
Ice golf is centuries old
Ice golf was known right back in the 17th century. A painting by the Dutch painter Aert van der Neer (1603-1677) shows players with a club in their hands attempting to get a ball into a hole in the ice covering a frozen canal in Holland. At that time the game was called "kolven".
A brief retrospect
The World Ice Golf Championship was the brainchild of Mr. Arne Neimann, a local resident and hotel proprietor on a small island called Uummannaq, off Greenland's North West coast. In 1997 Mr. Neimann challenged architect Rolf-Henning Jensen to design Greenland's first golf course, which proved remarkably easy to do. With support of the local community, Uummannaq Municipality and Greenland Tourism the World Ice Golf Committee was set-up to establish the ice golf championship. The World Ice Golf Championship in Uummannaq has become a genuine and inimitable international golfing event.
The tournament
The Tournament is a 36 hole-stroke competition played over two. The day before the Championship the players also compete in a 'Ryder Cup' style tournament, called The Niemann Cup, as a tribute to Arne Niemann. It is a great way for participants to get used to the freezing conditions, playing on ice and the layout of the course before taking part in the World Championship tournament.

True link with golf's history Golfnorthwest, Harold Brough Visits An Historic Merseyside Links WALLASEY is not just one of the great links courses of the north but a club at the heart of the great traditions of golf. Its sand dunes, of course, are famous, challenging to the very best. The famous old links has hosted many great events, including final qualifying rounds of the Open and that honour will be restored when the greatest championship in world golf returns to Royal Liverpool in 2006. Inevitably to walk the fairways and spend some time in the club-house will stir the memories of events and names from the past. Wallasey is best known as the famous home of Stableford. Frank Barney Gorton Stableford, ex-Boer War surgeon, became a member in 1914 and here he became aware of the frustrations of high handicap golfers after they had made a disastrous start in a medal round. So he devised the points system which was to bring so much pleasure and indeed moments of relief and hope to golfers. If during your visit your ball strays into the rough or the wind blows strong from the sea at Wallasey you may, once again, have particular cause to be thankful to 'Stablie' as he was affectionately known.

or contact the Christmas Island Tourism Association Course Details The course is one of the most picturesque in the world. It is dominated by towering limestone cliffs, which provides an excellent backdrop to your game. Golden bosuns and frigate birds that float in the updraughts are the only spectators. The magnificent Indian Ocean keeps the breeze cool and if you are lucky you will see spinning dolphins. The fairways are fringed with coconut trees which may 'gobble' wayward balls. Red crabs can be seen scampering across the greens. Robber crabs lie in wait at the edge of the jungle and often mistake golf balls for coconuts.
History The Christmas Island Golf Club was established in 1955. It is nestled between dramatic cliffs, National Park and the Indian Ocean. The area selected was partly cleared by Prisoners of War during World War II. In 1954 a petition was presented to the Christmas Island Manager requesting permission to form a golf club. Members carried out construction of the course in their own time using equipment made available by the British Phosphate Commission. On 18 June 1955 the first official competition was held on the newly constructed six holes with sand greens. Since that time the course has been extended to nine holes and the sand greens have been replaced by grass.

Course Reviews Golfers' Chronicle Course Reviews Article True link with golf's history Previous The 18th is a perfect end, a 368-yard par-4. The tee is again on the high ground with, below, the now familiar dips and hollows of the more gentle dunes, a hole that was described as the 'jewel among the dunes.' It is not long or demanding after the tests which have gone before. But even if the drive finishes on the fairway, the green in front of the clubhouse is out of sight. So it helps to be able to judge distances. But the finishing hole, like so many at Wallasey, will stay in the memory. The welcoming clubhouse has pictures in the bar of Old Tom Morris, four times Open champion and designer of the original course in 1891, Harold Hilton, twice Open champion, four times Amateur champion who designed the 15th and was made a life member and of John Ball, Open champion and another life member. The great portrait of 'Stablie' is in the bar, too, and on the other side of the wall a signed portrait of Bobby Jones, the American who for many was the greatest golfer of all time. Jones sat for the picture in 1930 when he qualified at Wallasey for the Open he was to win that year at Royal Liverpool. Linger awhile. Watch the sun go down. Think of the day and golf's great history.

This, people, is what an A-Game looks like: Michael Jordan in the playoffs. Joe Montana in the last two minutes. Secretariat in a saddle. Tiger Woods in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. By Gary Van Sickle - Sports Illustrated The book of Tiger Woods lore is going to be encyclopedia-thick by the time his golf career is over. Last time anybody checked, it was already heftier than your average Tom Clancy novel. What Woods did last November in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf was a vivid reminder why Woods is worth the price of admission. Just about every tournament Woods plays in, he does something amazing, unbelievable or something you've never seen before. Like a 15-shot victory margin in a U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. A stiffed iron shot in the darkness on the 72nd hole at Firestone. Four must-make birdies on the final four holes at last year's PGA Championship to have a chance to catch Rich Beem, who nonetheless didn't stumble. Or a 15-under-par performance for two rounds at the Poipu Bay Golf Course, a gorgeous, windswept course that isn't nearly as easy as Woods made it look as he won the PGA Grand Slam for a record fifth straight year. That's what golf looks like with an A-Gameeasy. At the Grand Slam, Woods shot a 61 that looked easy. Easy. While this tournament wasn't filled with suspense about who was going to win, it was packed with drama about whether Woods might birdie every doggone hole, shoot 50-something and possibly leap over a tall building in a single bound. Through no fault of Davis Love, Justin Leonard and Rich Beem, Woods turned the PGA Grand Slam into a mesmerizing one-man show with two days of scintillating golf. Not only was it worth the price of admission, it made you want the video. It was the kind of golf you wanted to own.

Whichever way it is played there has always been an incredible bond between a golfer and his or her clubs. Part of this affection may be a result of the search for the perfect implement complicated by the difficulties of mastering the game. Or it may stem from the singular, hand made quality that older clubs possess. The aesthetic combination of old wood, mild English steel and leather found in wood shafted clubs make them intriguing items to collect and appreciate. Within them is stored the history of the game whose championship contests have been staged for over 135 years. Old golf clubs are the primary focus, but from time to time other pieces of golf equipment will be presented. Golf club collectors, golf historians and all golfers in general should find items here to interest them every month. The articles will be updated approximately every two months.
