FAYETTEVILLE Sophomore Amanda McCurdy continues to make University of Arkansas golf history as she became as the first Lady Razorback selected all-Southeastern Conference.
McCurdy, an El Dorado, Ark., native was chosen second-team according the SEC's women's golf all-conference criteria, and marks a new milestone in the nine-year history of the program.
"I'm very proud of Amanda," said head coach Kelley Hester. "This is a small step that shows a lot of improvement both for Amanda and for the program."
McCurdy has competed in every round of every event for the Lady Razorbacks since joining the team last year. This season McCurdy is averaging a team-best 74.73, and has helped the Lady Razorbacks to a No. 29 ranking this week.
McCurdy opened her record-setting season finishing in a tie for first at the Embassy Suites/Tyson Invitational at Pinnacle Country Club. She added a victory at the Landfall Tradition becoming the only Lady'Back with more than one career win and the first player to notch a pair of wins in a season.

By the early 1850s Gutta Percha golf balls had made Featheries a collectors' item. The gutta percha golf ball period lasted from around 1848 well into the 1900s. Gutta Percha is a rubber-like material that comes from the dried sap of sapodilla trees of East Asia. The earliest solid gutta balls were formed from pieces of gutta percha heated in water and softened. These first gutty balls were made by rounding the heated material into a ball by hand. After a few years, metal molds were used. A skilled ball maker could produce six dozen or more gutty balls a day, 25 times what the feather ball maker could turn out. This volume of production caused the price of balls to drop to a cost that middle and lower income golfers could afford. Thus the game of golf was able to attract many new players who had previously been excluded by the high cost of equipment.

This is a depiction often titled "Winter Landscape" done by the Dutch artist Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634) He did at least two winter landscapes in pen and watercolors, that included men playing the game of "Colf" (not Golf) in the scenes. Yes, the Dutch did play a golf-like strick and ball game on frozen rivers and on land. It was a target or a cross country game, where the goal was to hit a target (not a hole) in certain number of strikes. The target could be a stick or stump in the ice or the door of a building.

Golf returned as an intercollegiate sport at Haverford after a decade-and-a-half absence when Tim Harvey organized a club during his freshman year of 1998-99. Harvey and classmate Dan Steinhagen both competed in every fall and spring season from Spring 1999 until their graduation in 2002, except for their respective junior semesters abroad at The University of St. Andrews in Scotland. In the spring of 2003, the Fords were granted the opportunity to compete in the Centennial Conference Championships - against varsity teams from the other member institutions of the conference. Corky Newcomb'72 didn't really intend to become an inventor of zany sporting goods and the writer of outrageous puns.
He meant to be a hotel administrator like his parents, who ran a resort for many years in Wolfeboro, NH But somewhere on the way to a quiet, sane life, Newcomb took a detour.
It began in 1972 when he visited a Civil War battlefield in Richmond, Va., where his great-great-grandfather was killed. Looking down at the ground, Newcomb saw bullets scattered about and entrepreneurial possibilities.
Soon he had a large crew digging up nearly half a million Civil War bullets in the Richmond area, which he sold in paperweights and letter openers to Nieman Marcus. It was his first taste of what he calls " the fever ," the excitement of taking an idea and seeing it through to a marketable product.
For a few years, Newcomb worked at a Dallas hotel, but "the fever" won out. "I quit my job and sold bullets,"

Canadian Golf History
An Early History of Golf in Canada
prepared by: Ms. Karen Hewson
Curator / Archivist Canadian Golf Hall of Fame
It should come as no surprise to find that the game of golf in Canada owes its establishment to the massive immigration of Scots during the 19th Century. The game had been played in Scotland for well over 300 years by the time the word "golf" is first found in print in Canada. That was 1826, when the Montreal Herald ran a notice "To Scotsmen A few true sons of Scotia, eager to perpetuate the remembrance of her Customs have fixed upon the 25th December and the 1st January, for going to the Priests' Farm, to PLAY AT GOLF. Such of their Countrymen as choose to join them, will meet them before TEN O'Clock, A.M., at D. M'Arthur's INN, Hay-Market. Steps have been taken to have CLUBS provided." Unfortunately, there is no record following up this invitation, so we may never know how many, if any, took up the offer. Likewise, there are many theories that golf was played earlier than 1826, but no proof has been found as unequivocal as this invitation.

A History of the Golf Club
Early Golf Clubs
In the earliest days of golf on the eastern coast of Scotland, players used primitive equipment to play the game in a rather haphazard and casual manner. While players initially carved their own clubs and balls from wood, they soon turned to skilled craftsmen to produce competitive equipment.
The earliest reference to a set of specially made clubs is when King James IV of Scotland commissioned a bow-maker in Perth to make him a set in 1502. Later when he ascended to the English throne, he appointed William Mayne in 1603 as royal club-maker. Mayne held an exclusive licence throughout the Kingdom.
A set of clubs at the time consisted of a set of play clubs (longnoses) for driving, fairway clubs (or grassed drivers) for medium range shots, spoons for short range shots, niblicks (similar to today's wedges) and a putting cleek. After 1618, the Featherie golf ball was introduced which endured for more than 200 years.
Club heads were made from tough wood such as beech, holly, pear and apple. Shafts were made from ash or hazel. The head was connected to the shaft using a splint and then bound tightly using leather straps. The cost, time and effort which went into making golf clubs priced them beyond the reach of the masses. The clubs especially long-noses and niblicks were also prone to breakage and a golfer could expect to break at least one club during a round. These factors meant that golf was typically associated with the upper echelons of society.

While on a Northwest golf four, the famed Gene Sarazen played several Macon layouts. He come away duly impressed. " Never before have I seen such beautiful golf courses. I've seen an architecture, something new, that has been in my mind for years and I am glad to see a man with A.V. Macon's ability bring it out. Every hole is different and each offers a real test if the player expects to get down in par figures." Macon was an artist in the truest sense of the word. He shaped the earth into some of the finest golfing grounds in North America. In 1987, noted golf architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. testified to Macon's work. “He was a generation ahead of his time. Players have become so proficient at playing short irons into greens that Macan's philosophy is now being introduced to combat this skill.”
