With the death in 1603 of the unmarried and childless Elizabeth I, James VI of Scotland, her cousin, was recognized by the English Parliament as the rightful heir to the English throne. In that year, he was crowned James I of England. Thereby, the Scottish and English thrones were joined and the United Kingdom resulted. James was known for a propensity to golf (one week after ascending to the throne of England, he appointed his personal clubmaker), so it is no surprise that golf traveled with him as he moved from Edinburgh to London. Shortly after ascending to the English throne, James approved the settlement of the Ards Peninsula, east of Belfast, by his Scottish friend Hugh Montgomery, Laird of Braidstone. Braidstone is located near Ayr and, therefore, near the Prestwick golf links. The first mention of golf in Irish history comes in a request by Montgomery for a Master of Arts to travel to his newly-founded Irish estate "To teach Latin, Greek, and Logycks, allowing the scholars a green for recreation at goff, football and archery."

CANADIAN BLIND GOLF HISTORY Return to Canada Home Page Return to Main Home Page "The Canadian Blind Golf Association has been established in 1999. Blind and visually-impaired golfers, with the aid of their sighted guides/caddies, have been playing blind golf in Canada for well over two decades now. The annual championship tournament, held at a different site each year throughout Canada, brings Canadian golfers and international guests up to a world class level as both hosts and competitive golfers. The Canadian Blind Golf Association’s programs provide instruction on golf technique, the rules of golf, and opportunities to play at a recreational or competitive level. Golfers are not restricted by age or sex. Golfers are categorized as either male or female and will play and compete in their own pre-determined sight classification category, B-1 (totally blind up to light perception), B-2 (one to five percent), or B-3 (six to ten percent). Golfers from each category may also compete against one another on an equal and level playing field with the use of a pre-determined net handicapping system based on the rules of golf set forth by the RCGA and the International Blind Golf Association. Anyone may benefit from our Association as the only requirement to becoming a member within the Association is that a person be registered as legally blind. Our program not only encourages the development of blind golf for all ages, but it also provides blind and visually-impaired individuals the tools and motivation for integration, broadening self-esteem, increased public awareness, and the positive outlook for a brighter future

and a new millennium. With classic styling and rugged windswept features it remains Oregon s premier link to a rich golf history.
    http://gearhartgolflinks.com/html/history.html
"Links" A golf course built on sand left by the sea, influenced by natural forces such as wind, rain, vegetation and terrain. Legend has it that Gearhart Golf Links began life in about 1888, starting out as a few holes of true Links golf amongst the seaside meadows that characterize the North Oregon coast. Golf, somewhat new to the U.S., came to Gearhart by way of visitors to the bustling resort who had experienced the game in Europe and found Gearhart's meadows the perfect setting. By 1892, golf was a regular pastime for guests of the Hotel Gearhart on the four-hole course just across the street. In 1901, at the hands of Marshall Kinney, Gearhart was officially opened as a 9 hole course. In 1913-1915 Gearhart grew to 18 holes and began a long heritage as one of the state's premiere golf venues. Between1926 and 1935 the course underwent a series of changes including a redesign by Chandler Egan resulting in the layout which remains relatively unchanged. In 1999, Northwest golf course architect, William G. Robinson re-designed a large portion of the golf course.
