From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The first recorded reference to chole, the probable antecedent of golf. It is a derivative of hockey played in Flanders (Belgium). A Scottish regiment aiding the French against the English at the Siege of Bauge is introduced to the game of chole. Hugh Kennedy, Robert Stewart and John Smale, three of the identified players, are credited with introducing the game in Scotland. Golf, along with football, is banned by the Scots Parliament of James II because it has interfered with military training for the wars against the English. The ban on golf is reaffirmed by the Parliament of James III The golf ban is affirmed again by Parliament, this time under King James IV With the signing of the Treaty of Glasgow between England and Scotland, the ban on golf is lifted. James IV makes the first recorded purchase of golf equipment, a set of clubs from a bow-maker in Perth, Scotland. Queen Catherine of England, in a letter to Cardinal Wolsey , refers to the growing popularity of golf in England. The first commoner recorded as a golfer is Sir Robert Maule, described as playing on Barry Links (near the modern-day Carnoustie).

Part 2 Michigan Golf History 1911-1920
By Art McCafferty During the years 1911-1920, the participation in golf in this country exploded. However, World War I slowed golf course construction in both Europe and the United States. Michigan mirrored the country and at the end of the decade, the golf inventory of the state totaled 63. "What is there about this game that has increased its players from the 5,000 of ten years ago to the 2,500,000 or 3,500,000 of today?" is the question. And the answer is "Try the game once." Read an article in the New York Times in 1915. Another answer to the question, might have been the dramatic U.S. Open win of Frances Quimet over Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in 1913. The youngster, just 20, beat back a strong European field to capture the victory. The following year, he was followed to the victory stand by the ever-flamboyant Walter Hagan. American golf was on its way. In Michigan, 40 golf courses were added from 1911-1920. Tom Bendlelow and Willie Park, Jr., who designed many of the courses from 1896 to 1910, kept up their pace by collectively designing seven more courses during this period. However, the story of the era was the emergence of Donald Ross in Michigan. During this decade, Ross designed nine courses in Michigan, some of which were to become nationally renowned. Born in Dornoch, Scotland in 1872, Ross left behind a legacy of 413 golf courses that his company designed, including such luminary venues as Seminole, Pinehurst No. 2, Oakland Hills, and Wannamoisett in Rhode Island.

By Paul Wurster Members of the Thurston High girls golf team are planning to rewrite the record books.
If the Colts qualify a girls team for the state championships next week, it will be the first in the programs eight-year history.
"I am really optimistic. If the girls shoot what they are capable of -- and what they average -- we will be second," he said.
The Sheldon Irish are the odds-on favorite to win the district title. Sheldon owns seven of the last eight league trophies and returned two-time district champion Dana Anderson.
"Sheldon will win it, that is the consensus," Durfee said. "They've got three girls that are shooting really good scores."
"If you compare our girls' top scores, we would beat them by about 15 strokes, so it comes down to putting two good days back to back," he said. "I would give the edge to our girls right now based on what we have been doing. We are generally hovering right around 400 as a team.
The Colts have three seniors, but leading the way is freshman Erica Omlid, a solid addition with low numbers. Omlid carded a 79 at Trysting Tree during the Corvallis Invitational and 85 at the Eugene Country Club Invitational this season.

E-mail this story Posted on: Saturday, January 17, 2004 4 feet from golf history By Ferd Lewis Advertiser Staff Writer Michelle Wie signed autographs after finishing the second round of the Sony Open yesterday. She shot a 2-under par 68 yesterday, built around four birdies and two bogeys, to go with her opening-day 72. Wie waves as she walks off the 18th hole, where she made birdie. She birdied two of the last three holes. In the end, Michelle Wie didn't need to be the Punahou School honor roll student she is to know her Sony Open in Hawai'i numbers came up one stroke short of making golf history. After making birdie on the 18th hole, she asked PGA official Johnny Andrews where the 36-hole cut was and, "He said '139' and I was like — I added 70 plus 70 together and it equaled 140 — 'no, no, this is not happening,' " Wie said. "I thought I made it after I made that putt." She had a 2-under par 68 yesterday, built around four birdies and two bogeys, to go with an opening-day 72, not enough to join the 79 who made the cut but still better than 48 others in the 144-player field.

    WOMEN'S GOLF HISTORY
Peggy Kirk Bell Women’s golf has enjoyed a very distinguished history at Rollins College. From the time of legendary star Peggy Kirk Bell in the 1940s to the present era, Rollins has made a habit of turning out great golfers and also of ranking among the top programs in the country. Last season the Tars claimed their first NCAA II national championship and eighth overall. The first national title came in 1948 and Rollins also claimed the championship in 1950 and 1956. Nearly twenty years would pass before the Tars claimed their next championship. The 1974 Rollins squad defeated teams from all of the top major colleges in the country to win the AIAW National Championship. The 1990s was a particularly fruitful decade for the Tars, as Rollins claimed three national championships and finished second on five other occasions. Rollins claimed back-to-back national titles in 1991 and 1992 and regained the championship in 1994. It finished second to Longwood (VA) College in 1990, 1993 and 1995 and behind only Methodist (NC) College in the inaugural NCAA Division II/III Championship in 1996. In 1999, the Tars placed second to Florida Southern. Several Tars have enjoyed individual success at the NCGA and NCAA level.

On the crisp Spring morning of March 6, 1931, the Rollins College men’s golf team entered their first intercollegiate tournament, thereby launching one of the nation’s most prestigious and successful small college golf programs. The Tars have been competing and winning continuously for 69 years. Rollins traditionally is a familiar sight on the fairways during national championship competition. The Tars have sent 25 teams to the NCAA or NAIA national championships since 1957 (25 of 40 years). Included in the period is a streak of 14 consecutive appearances from 1969 to 1983. After a six-year absence, Rollins returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1989 and finished 8th out of 17 teams. In his seven years as head coach, Kyle Frakes has led Rollins to the championships five times. Their best finish during that span was third in the 1994 and 1997 championships. After finishing as tournament runner-up in 1969, the Tars claimed their only NCAA men’s golf championship during the 1970 season. The best finish for Rollins in the years since their championship has been a second place finish during the 1977 championships. Since 1970 Rollins has competed in the national tournament 18 times and finished out of the top 10 only once (14th in 1983). The Rollins golf squad has produced 43 All-Americans in its history. Individual national champions from Rollins include Jim Curti (NAIA national champion in 1957) and Mike Nicolette, who won the NCAA Division II championship in 1976.

Golfers interested in the state history of the sport may purchase a new book that has been published by the Massachusetts Golf Association.
"A Commonwealth of Golfers A Centennial Tribute to the Game" and Its Players is a 280-page "coffee table" book that features contributions by distinguished journalists and writers like John Updike, Herbert Warren, Bradley S. Klein, and John P. English.
More than 400 stunning photographs, many commissioned especially for the book, are also featured.
A paragraph on the MGA Web site, which has a link to excerpts, describes some of the book's content.
"From native son Francis Ouimet's monumental upset victory in the 1913 United States Open, which precipitated the first genuine golf boom in American history, to the equally historic come-from-behind-triumph, in the 1999 Ryder Cup Matches, of a determined United States team captained by Ben Crenshaw, Massachusetts has experienced some of the most defining moments in the game's history."
The book is now available for the early-bird price of $49.95 plus $4.25 per copy for shipping and handling. It can be ordered on-line with a credit card at www.mgalinks.org. An order form can also be printed and mailed for those who prefer to pay by check.
