Golf Equipment Industry Update:
New Products Unveiled at the 1998 PGA Show
By Carlton Vinson Winston-Salem's Beacon Golf and Its Putter On a Roll Beacon Golf was a hit at the recent PGA Show. And at the recent Greensboro Golf Show, there were large numbers of people trying out and purchasing the new putter. Like many good ideas, this putter had its beginning on the golf course. C.H. McMahan of Advance was having one of those days. From tee to green, he was flawless, but once on the putting surface he couldn't convert. That experience, and two years of research and development, led to the founding of Beacon Golf and an entire line of putters designed to keep the putter head on line and send more balls to the bottom of the cup. McMahan's design features a patent-pending Tri-Balance technology. By rearranging the elements of the club head such that the center of mass of the putter head is disposed further away from the face, rather than near the face, McMahan has reduced the tendency to rotate the clubhead away from its intended travel path, greatly improving accuracy in putting. "The heel-toe weighting in putters has been a substantial improvement in design, but it doesn't go far enough," said McMahan. "By adding a third weight area, we have completed a triangle of sorts, and everyone knows the strength and stability of the triangle." Both lines of Beacon putters (blades and mallets) utilize the Tri-Balance technology and all carry the names of something golfers hold near and dear-"birdies"-such as robins, orioles and hummingbirds.

ABOUT HANDICAPS
"I noticed that one of my group members is receiving a handicap index above the USGA men's limit of 36.4. What's going on?"
For us to know which limit to apply would require that we ask which of your group members are male and which of your members are female. However, very few customers know of the gender distinction when handicaps are concerned. So, for us to ask Group Captains to identify the gender of each member... well, we're concerned that to do so would be perceived as an invasion of privacy. So unless a Group Captain writes to us to indicate otherwise, we apply a limit of 40.4 to everyone. But we do print a little warning message on the score card summary sheets whenever any player's handicap exceeds the 36.4 men's value. If your group members are exclusively male and you wish for us to apply the men's limit of 36.4 to your group, just send us a request and we'll take care of the rest. If your group is a mix of men and women, then contact us and identify which members the men's limit should apply to and again we'll apply the appropriate specific settings and rerun your charts. If your group is exclusively female, you don't need to make a request because, by default, your members will all have the 40.4 limit.

BCMS Foundation 30th Anniversary Celebration Continues
Did you know Pine Ridge Golf Course, the site of BCMS Foundation's third annual golf tournament, is the most popular public golf course on the East Coast? Well you missed an opportunity to be counted in that number on May 21, when eighty BCMS members and supporters gathered at 8:00 a.m. to help raise funds for the BCMS Foundation. The nippy weather did not deter those committed golfers who periodically stopped in the clubhouse, where the fireplace warmed the already generous spirit of the day. After completing the course, golfers were greeted with a delicious buffet and tons of appreciation from Reed Winston, M.D., Chair of the 2002 Golf Tournament, Paul Burgan, M.D., Foundation President and "Seamus" Flynn, BCMS President.

THE GRADUATED TEACHING METHOD FORe GOLF
BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF GTM FORe GOLF ABOUT THE COMPANY The GRADUATED TEACHING METHOD FORe GOLF was conceived and developed by Khater Salomon over a period of years beginning in the early 1990s. The seeds were first sown when Mr. Salomon was asked to instruct a group of children between the ages of seven and twelve in the fundamentals of golf. In attempting to teach these children to swing a golf club in the conventional manner he realized they became very frustrated and lost interest because they neither felt nor saw immediate, positive results. On his way home from an extremely frustrating afternoon of watching a group of discouraged children, Mr. Salomon prayed and asked God to inspire his thoughts so that a simpler method could be employed to teach them. The Lord responded. Using the same principles employed in "Tee Ball," the most basic method of teaching children how to hit a baseball, Mr. Salomon developed the GRADUATED TEACHING METHOD FORe GOLF.

Of Birds and Bees, Grass and Trees
by Jamie Dawson "Golf courses are wildlife habitats. Wetlands, roughs, trees, and wildflowers, all of these support wildlife. In fact, historically, animals helped to make the game what it is, rabbit scrapes formed targets and sand-pit burrows created by sheep later became sand bunkers." Dr James Beard, 1982 Golf courses are located over a wide range of landscapes from rainforest to deserts, mountain slopes to seaside. The landscape setting is an integral part of the golfer's appreciation of a golf course and of the enjoyment of playing the game. The diversity in settings from 'natural' to 'manicured' courses and the differing challenges encountered on each is the principal reason why golfers enjoy travelling and playing a range of course types. Each golf course should be designed to exploit its natural features to the fullest and have its own distinctive character and appeal. Often in order to integrate the golf features, modifications or 'enhancements' to the landscape occur. The designer may introduce trees, shrubs, grasses, waterbodies, earth shaping, topographical features and other elements within the landscape to impact on the play of the course. The range of possible design permutations is endless for any given layout. The course layout and landscape setting should complement each other so that in time they are always considered as one. The creation of a new golf course is often a mix of favourable and adverse impacts. On degraded sites the creation of new 'natural' landscapes can enhance habitat opportunities and reintroduce indigenous species, both flora and fauna. In more natural settings it is the responsibility of the designer to route the course so as to preserve and integrate the key ecological areas. Some impacts may occur in other less pristine areas within the course, but often these are offset over time as new habitats are created with added bio-diversity.

The Power of Having a Musical Focus
by Bob Baker Focus. It's not just something you do with a camera. The kind of focus I'm talking about can be one of the most powerful weapons you use to attract fans. Through the magic of focus, you can transform your musical identity from one that is meaningless and forgettable to one that screams for attention. When you have a strong musical focus, you position yourself as an artist that fills a specific niche and caters to a well-defined audience. The only thing is, most artists don't do this. The average songwriter, for instance, in an effort to craft a hit, creates songs that sound similar to what's being played on the radio. They write about love gone wrong or teen frustration or dealing with lustful urges ... all themes that have proven themselves popular with the masses. There's nothing wrong with this approach. There will always be a need for predictable pop songs. However, since thousands of songwriters are striving for the same type of hit, your struggle to stand out and be noticed will be all uphill. To stand out especially as an independent artist you have to resist those well-traveled paths and find a distinct road that's all your own. Sure, you won't appeal to as wide a range of people, but the fans who do gravitate toward you will be cult-like in their admiration.
