Sport Specific Spring Training Routines To Help Your Golf Game
by Lisa A. Leonard
Certified Fitness Professional

Improving your performance on the links starts now while your local course is still covered in snow. Before long the season will be upon you and without preseason conditioning, your handicap won't be much better than last year.
Tiger Woods' climb to the top of the profession has astounded the golf world. While you will never see him go toe to toe against a heavily conditioned football player, his hours in the gym have definitely paid off.
While cardiovascular endurance isn't necessary in the game of golf like it is in long distance marathon running, walking 18 holes can be a challenge. If you sat around all winter consuming copious amounts of comfort food and getting little or no physical activity, your first few trips to the course will be exhausting. 20-30 minutes of cardio training 3 times per week between now and golf season will give you a significant edge on your competition.
Some cardio options that can be done to prepare your body for the rigors of your sport are treadmill walking and elliptical training. Both modalities work the large muscles of the body and will improve heart and lung function.

    2001 Masters Tournament
A historical companion to the Masters Tournament
    by John Gettings

Tiger Woods is poised to become the first reigning champion of all four major golf tournaments. The first of the Professional Golf Association Tour's four major tournaments held annually ( U.S. Open British Open , and PGA Championship are the others), the Masters Tournament brings together the world's best golfers, making it the golf equivalent of baseball's All-Star Game and opening day wrapped into one.
This year's 65th edition of the Masters Tournament could be historic. The incomparable Tiger Woods finished fifth in last year's Masters Tournament but bounced back to win the final three major tournaments in 2000 . He is favored to win this year's Masters and in doing so could become the first golfer to be reigning champion of all four majors simultaneously. Woods, 25, already owns one Masters Tournament title. He won the

Golf In Cyberspace
By Gary M. Pinkston (1650 word feature. Originally published April, 1998)
When Golf met the Internet it was love at first byte. The tremendous popularity of the game has created in its enthusiasts a craving for golf related information that seems almost insatiable. The Internet feeds this craving in ways no other medium can. At the touch of a mouse the game’s deciples can open an electronic window into any of the more than 5000 golf sites currently availible on the World Wide Web. These windows provide high and low handicapper alike instantaneous access to up-to-the-minute tournament scores and leader-boards; info on the latest and greatest high-tech equipment; bios and pictures of their favorite players; intimate details of even the most prestegious of golf courses or next Wednesday’s weather forecast at their local muni. Available 24 hours a day and providing a two-way communication capability, the Internet allows its users an interactivity with its sites that other media cannot. They can first investigate hundreds of golfing get-a-way vacation packages, then book their reservations and pay for them, all on-line. Order the hottest new video from a popular teaching Pro. Choose a golf camp and then book their children into. Or find the perfect fairway home at a club on the other side of the continent, then request specific information on the neighborhood’s schools, shopping and transportation. Unfortunately, the Internet is also the most disorganized database ever created by man. No central index or directory exists and there is no reference librarian on duty in cyberspace. Upon entry, its vast complexity can be quite intimidating. You are on your own with only the dim glow of your computer screen to guide you and all paths look the same. Some lead to Mega-sites like Golfweb while others lead into little backwaters like Joe’s used golf ball shopand some, like staircases in Sarah Winchester’s mansion, simply go nowhere at all. One can soon find themselves bumbling about like a blind man with a too-short cane.

Chiropractic and Golf
A Therapeutic Treatment and Prevention Program
by Jeffry Blanchard,DC, with Leonard Finkel This is the first in a 12-part series concentrating on the assessment and treatment of golfers and golf-specific injuries. Each installment will focus on a different physical problem, its causes and treatment. In the U.S. there are almost 30 million golfers, and every one of them a potential chiropractic patient. Because of the unilateral movement in the golf swing, virtually every golfer at some point experiences some form of injury or pain: some chronic, and others acute. There are three fundamental causes of golf injuries: poor posture, lack of flexibility and poor swing mechanics. The root cause of poor mechanics is often a result of a physical restriction or mechanical dysfunction, which may be alleviated through chiropractic procedures. Lack of flexibility can also be addressed by treatment and a prescribed stretching program specifically designed around each patient's restrictions. Obviously, chiropractic care is ideally suited to deal with poor posture. On the golf course, physical exertion is intermittent. A golfer will attempt approximately 50-70 violent swings every five minutes or so while playing 18 holes. The average amateur will swing his club at 80-100 miles per hour. On the driving range, the pounding is rapid and relentless. Your patient will flail away at golf balls 60-100 times in a half hour, and often continue the assault for hours on end.

Chiropractic and Golf, Part 11: Anatomy of a Golf Injury
by Jeffry Blanchard, DC The typical amateur golfer can swing golf club 90 miles an hour. When your patients swing their clubs out of position or out of balance, they put tremendous strain on their joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. When the force applied to the tissues exceeds their resistance, they will tear. We call tissue tears "strains" or "sprains," depending on their severity. Soft-tissue injuries can heal in six to eight weeks, depending on the severity of the injury and the age of the patient. However, when soft tissue heals, it becomes weaker than before the injury occurred. The injury site will mend with scars you cannot see. Scar tissue (fibrocytes) will infiltrate and replace the original tissue in and around the injury site. Fibrocytes are weaker, less elastic and more pain-sensitive than original soft tissue. When challenged by the movement of the body, fibrocytes will not lengthen and give way; instead, they get angry; become irritated and inflamed; and restrict normal joint motion. Clinical Management: Acute Versus Chronic Injury Golf injuries fall under two general categories: acute and chronic. Acute injuries are new injuries, and are usually associated with painful swelling. An acute injury prevents you from playing golf altogether. The first four to six weeks are crucial in the management/treatment of a new injury. In addition to pain relief, the goal of treatment is to reorganize the developing fibrocytes so they are more compatible with the surrounding tissue.

Do your confidence, consistency or concentration disappear on competition day?
Are you a better golfer than your current results show?
Don't worry! Most problems on the golf course can be overcome using mental training. Your mind controls your body - not the other way around, which means most problems in golf are due to the mind simply being untrained to perform correctly.
Self-sabotage is a common problem, as the pressure of competition often brings out problems which may not exist in practice. Your mind either works for you, or against you, just depending upon how you've "programmed" it to perform.
Any golfer can dramatically improve their scores through using mental training. Consistency, concentration and confidence are all best achieved through a regular mental training program, which only takes about 10 minutes. Here are some of the benefits of mental training: Common Golf Problems Which Can
Be Overcome With Mental Training Do you experience any of these?

Access The Sleeping Giant Within
Right now deep within you, you possess the ability to play a near-perfect round of golf. This ability lies within your mind.
If you have ever hit a great shot before (yes, even the ones you regarded as lucky!), the blueprint for that exact shot is right now deep within the archives of your mind's memory bank, waiting to be used again! You see, all golfers rely on the memory of their past golfing experience to hit shots (and then improve upon them), and then those new shots are stored within your memory bank - this is how we improve from experience (your mind's subconscious remembers every event in your life from the time of birth through to the present). However, your mind requires specific commands in order to produce a great shot, and the fact is that most people don't know what these commands are.

The story in footwear for golfers, nowadays, is all about technology, just as it is for clubs and balls. Companies have put more emphasis than ever on footwear research and development. The past 10 years have produced significant advances in materials, sole configurations and, yes, styles. Classic shoe styles still dominate, but they are designed as much for comfort and performance as they are for looks. Dexter's leading shoe line is the Declaration series. Companies have made considerable strides in unconventional looking shoes even boots and sandals which are also designed as much to help golfers as they are for appearance. "The past decade has seen considerable progress in delivering better fit and comfort for golfers," said Karen Pitts, vice president of marketing at Dexter Golf. "In making shoes today, we're dealing with treated leathers, waterproof membranes and temperature-controlled materials." What do golfers want most from their footwear?

Physiotherapy WHAT IS PHYSIOTHERAPY ?
Physiotherapy is an established, recognised system of diagnosis and treatment that lays its main emphasis on the structural integrity of the body. It is distinctive in that it recognises that much of the pain and disability we suffer stem from abnormalities in the function of the body structure as well as damage caused to it by disease. Physiotherapy uses many of the diagnostic procedures used in conventional medical assessment and diagnosis. Its main strength, however, lies in the unique way the patient is assessed from a mechanical, functional and postural standpoint and the manual methods of treatment applied to suit the needs of the individual patient.
