FRONT OFFICE BIOS
DEAN A. SPANOS
President - Chief Executive Officer
Dean Spanos stood at the helm and expertly navigated the Chargers through a very trying period in team history.
The organization lost its architect and Dean lost a close friend in April when General Manager John Butler passed away following a nine-month battle with cancer. A loss of such magnitude could have had a devastating emotional and psychological impact on a close-knit organization like the Chargers, but Spanos' calming influence and leadership orchestrated a smooth and seamless transition from Butler to new General Manager A.J. Smith.
Despite a trying offseason, Spanos has managed to keep optimism high.
Along with changes in the front office, the normal comings and goings on the team's roster provided plenty of excitement heading into the 2003 season.
Dean and his father, Alex, once again provided the financial backing to give Smith and Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer the means to improve the team. The most prominent addition came when the Chargers signed Pro Bowl wide receiver David Boston to a $40 million contract. Every time his staff asked, Spanos provided by signing top free agents, including Boston, fullback Lorenzo Neal, tackle Solomon Page and safety Kwamie Lassiter.
Spanos' commitment is no surprise as his guiding hand has been felt throughout the Chargers' organization and the entire San Diego community since the day he moved his family to La Jolla in 1984.
