Asian American Experience In The U.S.
A Chronological History: 1763-1992
* Chronology adapted from LEAP (Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics)

  • First recorded settlement of Filipinos in America. They escape imprisonment aboard Spanish galleons by jumping ship in New Orleans and fleeing into the bayous.
  • First recorded arrival of an Asian Indian in the United States.
  • China is defeated by the British Empire in the first Opium Warresulting in Treaty of Nanjing whereby China is forced to payindemnities of 21 million silver dollars, cede the island of Hong Kong and open five ports to foreign commerce. As a result peasant farmersare heavily taxed.
A series of floods and crop failures in southern China lead to poverty and threat of famine among peasant farmers.
  • Three Chinese students arrive in New York City for schooling. One of them, Yung Wing graduated from Yale in 1854 becoming the first Chinese to graduate in the United States.
  • Strike of gold at Sutter's Mill, CA, draws Chinese immigrants to WestCoast to mine gold. Many arrive as indentured servants during theCalifornia Gold Rush. The bulk of Chinese immigrants come later as acheap source of labor to work the railroads, mines and in other industries.
  • California imposes a Foreign Miner's License Tax, collecting $3 a month from every foreign miner who did not desire (or was prohibited by law) to become a citizen. The purpose of this tax was to reduce the number of Chinese immigrating to California as well as to discourage Chinese from mining for gold (although they did not pose a great threat to white miners since they usually worked deserted claims).

Our purpose is to encourage the use, restoration, and preservation of automobiles built by American Motors Corporation from 1957 through 1969. Although our focus is the cars made during these years, our club is open to anyone with an interest in the cars and trucks built by American Motors Corporation. About us We publish The Gold Standard bi-monthly. It is one of the many benefits that our members receive. Our dues are a modest $20/year. We encourage our members to join AMCRC for $18/year as well. The Pacific Gold Rush Ramblers holds meetings bi-monthly. We meet at various sites in and around the area between San Francisco Bay and the Gold Country in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Each meeting has a theme of interest to the members. We have met at the Jelly Belly Factory, the Behring Auto Museum, the Towe Ford Museum, the Gold Bug Mine, taken a drive tour to Mt. "California as I Saw It:" First-Person Narratives of California's Early Years, 1849-1900 consists of the full texts and illustrations of 190 works documenting the formative era of California's history through eyewitness accounts. The collection covers the dramatic decades between the Gold Rush and the turn of the twentieth century. It captures the pioneer experience; encounters between Anglo-Americans and the diverse peoples who had preceded them; the transformation of the land by mining, ranching, agriculture, and urban development; the often-turbulent growth of communities and cities; and California's emergence as both a state and a place of uniquely American dreams. The production of this collection was supported by a generous grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

Dave Moore Nature Area General Information Location:
The site is located approximately 2 miles west of the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park at Coloma on Highway 49 in El Dorado County, California, along the scenic and popular South Fork American River. (Need a map? Click here.) Description:
One of the main features of the Dave Moore Nature Area is a loop trail about a mile long which goes from the parking lot trail head to the South Fork American River and back again passing through several habitat types. Nestled in the heart of Gold Rush Country, the trail is lined with remnants from nearly 150 years ago when Chinese laborers channeled creek water by hand with pick and shovel for gold mining. Tailing piles from the Gold Rush period blanket the area which lend to the characteristic landscape that makes this area so unique. About half of the trail is constructed to be fully accessible to people with wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. Mailing Address:

http://ngeorgia.com/history/goldrush.html
Few words in the English language create the fervor that the cry of "Gold" does in man. A driving force in the colonization of America, gold was the primary reason for Hernando De Soto to visit the North Georgia region in the early 1540's. Indians along the Chattahoochee River north of Atlanta routinely panned for gold and found significant amounts of the material. Spanish miners joined them and formed minor settlements that operated almost continuously until the early 1700's. Much has been written as to who discovered gold in Georgia and when. Mines operated illegally in Cherokee Territory for years, but the first contemporary reference to a gold mining operation in the state points to present-day White County (then Habersham County) in 1829. By then at least two mines had been constructed in the Nacoochee Valley and there are indications are they were in operation in late 1828. Most modern historians and the state of Georgia discount the story of Benjamin Parks discovering gold at Licklog ( Dahlonega After the Spanish were forced from Georgia, interest in gold died for a number of years, but mining continued off and on throughout 18th century and into the 19th century. As early as 1819 there is evidence that gold was being mined by whites near the Cherokee town of Sixes. Although people knew of the gold, Frank Logan "discovered" it in

This site is undergoing major maintenance and will not be updated until this is complete. This reorganization is being done because of the number of people linking directly to the midis at this site and using up the bandwidth. The music may not be availble for a period of time while this is being done. I appreciate your patience.
  • The tunes here were not all written by Americans, but are songs that were known in America. Most songs of the Colonial and Revoltionary Era were songs that originated in England, Scotland and Ireland and immigrated with their people.
  • These dates are, of course, not perfect. I have struggled to put them in APPROXIMATE/BEST GUESS date order. If you have an educated correction, please let me know. A few tunes are listed more than once to make clear they were popular in several eras.
  • If you wish to use any of these tunes in an archive or on a webpage READ THIS
  • If you are looking for a particular tune, the fastest way to find it is to use the Search Engine. The search engine covers the entire site so it will find more than just American songs.
