The history of the California Gold Rush
The American population of the pacific west was but sparse in 1848, the year that California became a part of the United States, as a result of the Mexican War. Emigration thither now proceeded more rapidly, while the neighboring territory of Utah became the land of refuge of the strange sect of Mormons who had made their way thither in 1846 and founded Salt Lake City in 1847. The settlement of the Pacific region, however, must have taken place very slowly had it not been for the discovery of gold in the mountain region of that territory. The cry of "Gold," that rang far and wide throughout the land in the summer and autumn of 1848 gave rise to such a fever of emigration as the world has seldom known. Over land and over sea thousands of eager treasurer-seekers flocked to this new land of promise, and within one year of American occupation the land filled up more than it had done in three centuries of the drowsy Spanish rule.

He saw something shining in the stream - it was GOLD! News of this discovery spread like wildfire and was another big 'PULL' for people to head west. Panning for gold. They gathered dirt from the river bed and washed away the lighter grains until hopefully finding gold. This is sometimes called gold prospecting. By the end of the year there were over 10,000 men digging for gold. In 1849 there was so many people heading west, either overland, or usually by sea, that they were called the 'forty-niners'. Most people never found any gold - the main areas had been claimed. The mining camps were rough, wild places. Most people tried panning for gold but the large gold reserves were deep underground, and only the rich could afford deep mines. Many Cornish professional miners moved in to dig deep, and these were backed financially by banks and businesses in the east. They founded mining towns such as Humboldt, Virginia City and Bannack.

rapid mass movements of prospectors and adventurers to newly discovered goldfields. Upon discovery of a vein of gold, people would come from all parts of the world to seek their fortune. Towns and cities sprung up overnight, contributing to the development of the West. The most significant gold rush occurred in California in 1849 after gold was discovered in 1848 at John Sutter's mill in Coloma on the American River. The forty-niners came in such numbers that California became a state quickly. In 1859 others flocked to the Pike's Peak gold rush in Colorado, resulting in the development of the city of Denver. In 1896 the discovery of gold in the Klondike region of Canada near the Alaskan border caused a gold rush in 1897. Other gold rushes occurred in Arizona, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.

Students will understand the following: The topic gold is very broad but can be broken down to generate manageable topics for a research report. The graphic organizer known as a map can help writers narrow down a topic. For this lesson, you will need: A general encyclopedia Access to other print and electronic sources about aspects of gold Overhead transparency and projector or other means of materials for large-scale mapping gold in a circle in the middle of a chalkboard, on paper mounted on a wall, or on an overhead transparency. Your next step is to show students that an encyclopedia approaches the huge, overall topic

Photo Gallery Gold Rush History "I reached my hand down and picked it up; it made my heart thump, for I was certain it was gold. " - James Marshall 1848 A t a time when restless Americans were already itching to go west, the discovery of gold in California in 1848 was like gasoline on a fire. Within a year of its discovery, emigrants using the California Trail were flooding into the Sierra Nevada Range by the thousands. John Sutter was a Swiss immigrant who came to California in 1839 with a dream of building an agricultural empire. When he needed lumber in early 1848, he assigned the task to one of his men, James Marshall. Marshall decided to build a sawmill on the South Fork of the American river, about 40 miles from Sutter's home. Marshall discovered a gold nugget on January 24, 1848, while at the sawmill. He and his men found more gold nearby. Both Marshall and Sutter tried to keep things quiet, but soon word leaked out. Gold fever quickly became an epidemic.

Arizona: Ed Schieffelin - As the world buzzed with news of gold in the Klondike, one of the area's first prospectors died. His name was Ed Schieffelin. In earlier years, he had discovered a mountain of silver and founded the town of Tombstone, Arizona. When he embarked on his gold-seeking trek to the Yukon he was already worth one million dollars. But his appearance belied his wealth. His beard and his glossy black hair hung long. His gray ghost-eyes had the faraway look of the long-time prospector. In 1883, Schieffler prospected in the Yukon, where few white men had ever travelled. But after an arduous search he dismissed the Klondike as a frozen waste. He was still searching for gold in Oregon when a heart attack ended his life in 1897. Arkansas: Jim Hall - Hall had already been in the Yukon for ten years before he bought the claim that made him rich. When Hall made his fortune, he and his partner spent their gold on wine and women. At one point Hall fancied a woman and purchased her for twenty thousand dollars in gold dust. Hall did invest some of his money wisely when he built the Greentree Hotel in the most expensive section of Dawson. His investment was reduced to ashes a short time later when a dance-hall girl inadvertently started a fire that burned up half a million dollars of Dawson real estate. California: George Carmack California: Clarence Berry - Berry was one of the few truly sober, honest, hard-working men to hold claims on Eldorado and Bonanza creeks. Berry took a million and a half dollars out of the Klondike and, unlike so many, died with his fortunes intact. After leaving the Klondike, he went on to own two professional baseball teams, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. Berry was tending bar in a Fortymile saloon when he encountered an Austrian, Antone Stander, who needed a loan to work his prospect in the Klondike. Berry obliged, receiving half of Stander's Eldorado claim in return.

June 12, 2004 On January 24, 1848, an event occurred in Coloma that would radically impact the history of California and the Nation. James W. Marshall was building a sawmill for Captain John Sutter, using water from the South Fork of the American River. He noticed several flakes of metal in the tailrace water and recognized them to be gold. Though he tried to keep it a secret, the word spread quickly, and triggered the California Gold Rush of 1849. Until then, Coloma had been a remote outpost, named for a nearby Southern Maidu Indian Village. (Early spellings of the name included "Colluma" and "Culoma".) Its population soon swelled to many thousands. To reach California, people living on the East Coast crossed America in wagons or sailed around the southern tip of South America (this was of course before the Panama Canal was built). Many immigrants came from China to find work and earn money for their families.
