We commit to running five times a week and eating broccoli with every meal. But by the second week in January we’re often back to our old routine of TV and Twinkies. Why is it that, despite the exhortations of motivational speakers, goal setting just doesn’t work? I used to begin financial workshops by asking people to write down a couple of goals. By making the workshop personal, I reasoned, participants would be more engaged. I quickly became fascinated with this contrast: While it is relatively easy to teach people how to break goals down to monthly price tags and how to use a budget to pursue their accomplishment, it is often extremely difficult to get people to take the next steps. I still begin workshops by asking people to write down some of their financial goals. But I’ve learned two additional steps that are essential in setting goals that have the best possible chance of being accomplished.
