Instructional Materials in Career Studies Below are the CLN "Theme Pages" which focus on specific topics within Career Studies. CLN's theme pages are collections of useful Internet educational resources within a narrow curricular topic and contain links to two types of information. Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme.
Careers in Math Theme Page
Hunting Jobs Theme Page
This CLN theme page has a number of links to Internet sites which bring employers and employees together. Commonly, they give job hunters space to post resumes and employers the opportunity to post job openings. Students may find these sites useful for their employer profiles and career planning resources (e.g., searching tips/suggestions, advice on improving resumes). There is at least one link to a lesson plan in which students execute a job search.
Researching Occupations Theme Page
This CLN theme page has curricular resources and instructional materials for teachers and students interested in researching occupations. Students can find job descriptions/profiles, salaries, educational requirements, links to professional organizations for a wide range of occuations. Also, there are links to more general occupational information such as employement and labour market trends and occupational outlooks. Teachers will find a set of lesson plans for helping students to conduct this research.

Procedure- Introduce the lesson with a short discussion on what the term "career" means. Where have students heard this term before?
Display pictures from magazines or books that depict specific careers. If possible show a film about a particular career field , or better yet, have community representatives visit the classroom and give a brief description of their particular career.
Complete the lesson with a small group discussion (4-5 students) comparing and contrasting job versus career. How are they similar? How are the different?
Encourage students to use the dictionary for this activity.
Have students record their findings on a large Venn Diagram during a whole group discussion and presentation of small group findings. Keep this poster displayed in the classroom for students to add to, or refer to throughout the unit.
Evaluation- Student's active participation in large and small group discussions. How detailed were student's observations concerning careers and jobs? What differences did students note between a job and a career?

Teamwork Goal Setting and Achieving Grades 5-8 This group will focus on giving students the basic knowledge and skills needed to succeed at achieving their goals. As middle school aged kids, goal setting is a skill that is needed and will prove to be more and more valuable in their future. In many cases, kids may already have an idea of what they want to achieve in a few areas. However the plan of action is absent. As student-athletes you have the opportunity to be a positive influence to these kids. Your interest and time will spark a willingness to take action. Be sure to bring energy and enthusiasm to every session, the children will feed off of your attitude. Remember, this is your program, make the best out of it and have fun!

What's In Your Water? An Educator's Guide to Water Quality October 18, 2002 marked the 30th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act, and National Water Monitoring Day. Although this lesson plan is designed to enable your participation in this important event, these lessons can be done any time of the year. Students will learn about water and what makes water "clean," while gaining hands-on experience in environmental education and enabling educated choices in civic action. This lesson plan integrates skills used across multiple disciplines, including history, biology, chemistry, social studies, environmental studies, language arts and art. Preparation for Lesson Plans: You may purchase an inexpensive test kit with materials for via these vendors or through your local science supply stores. You may also create your own kit. If possible, plan ahead to arrange a field trip or determine an on-campus outdoors site in which to perform these water quality tests. If this is not possible, give yourself and your students at least one week to bring in samples from an appropriate source. These sources include lakes, streams, ponds, creeks, or oceans; not puddles, tap water, or storm drains.

Class Goal Setting/Curriculum Negotiation: Each instructional level contains more lifeskills units than could reasonably be covered during one cycle of instruction. Through needs assessment activities, students negotiate which units will be covered. In other words, students decide the contexts through which they wish to learn language skills. N eeds assessment is a component of the "Getting Started Unit", which is the first unit (and the only required unit) in each instructional level.

    MAY DAY May 1
Those ancient Romans! Some people believe the ancient Romans "invented" (amongst other things) the May Pole! Like other ancient civilizations, the ancient Romans worshipped many gods and goddesses. To honor the deities of new life and flowers, legend suggests they cut down a tree, decorated it with ribbons, then danced around it. This was the beginning of the May Pole. It could be true. It would certainly be in character! The ancient Irish called this day "Beltaine". They believed that Beltaine was the day their sun gods escaped from winter darkness. No one is quite sure who originated the idea of May Day, but it might have been the ancient Egyptians! For all the ancient cultures, the coming of summer was cause for celebration. It meant food could be gathered or grown. As part of their celebration, some ancient people gathered flowers and put them on window ledges to keep out pesky fairies. Others filled baskets with gifts and greenery to give to friends and loved ones. The ancient Celts built bonfires, with nine different types of wood, then leaped over the flames for luck. In the Bavarian regions of Germany, people played tricks on each other! Yet, for all its appearance of merriment, for most ancient cultures, May Day was a very serious celebration. Many rituals were designed, not to thank, but to please and to appease the gods. It would not be until the autumn festivals, when the crops were safely harvested, that they would heave a sigh of relief.

It also provides some thinking tools that can be applied to all sorts of decisions a person must make in his lifetime. Of the greatest importance, it is designed to pave the way to intrinsic (internal) motivation WARNING!
