Global Warming
In Brief : FAQ
Global Warming Basics
What it is, how it's caused, and what needs to be done to stop it.
What causes global warming? Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution they produce 2.5 billion tons every year. Automobiles, the second largest source, create nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO annually. Here's the good news: technologies exist today to make cars that run cleaner and burn less gas, modernize power plants and generate electricity from nonpolluting sources, and cut our electricity use through energy efficiency. The challenge is to be sure these solutions are put to use. Is the earth really getting hotter? Yes. Although local temperatures fluctuate naturally, over the past 50 years the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. And experts think the trend is accelerating: the three hottest years on record have all occurred since 1998. Scientists say that unless we curb global warming emissions, average U.S. temperatures could be 3 to 9 degrees higher by the end of the century.

This site provides links to resources skeptical of those sort of doomsday scenarios. The articles linked to here are written by a wide variety of people, from scientists to laypeople, and their inclusion here should not be read as an endorsement of their positions. Just as when dealing with things coming out of the environmentalist camp, you need to use your brain and decide for yourself to what extent global warming poses a threat to humanity. global warming
Global warming is real and underway The mainstream scientific consensus on global warming is becoming clearer every day: changes in our climate are real and they are underway. Now. But we can do something about it. The evidence that human-induced global warming is real is increasingly clear and compelling.

  • Warming in the 20th century is greater than at any time during the past 400-600 years.
    offsite
    trend chart
In addition, changes in the natural environment support the evidence from temperature records:
  • mountain glaciers the world over are receding;
    the Arctic ice pack has lost about 40% of its thickness over the past four decades;
    the global sea level is rising about three times faster over the past 100 years compared to the previous 3,000 years; and
    there are a growing number of studies that show plants and animals changing their range and behavior in response to shifts in climate.

As the Earth continues to warm, there is a growing risk that the climate will change in ways that will seriously disrupt our lives. While on average the globe will get warmer and receive more precipitation, individual regions will experience different climatic changes and environmental impacts. Among the most severe consequences of global warming are:
  • a faster rise in sea level

http://www.time.com/time/newsfiles/environment/
Costa Rica schoolgirls plant a sapling as part of the celebration of Earth Day in 1998 (Kent Gilbert/AP) First observed internationally on April 22, 1970, Earth Day has evolved into a major worldwide event for environmentalists young and old, who use their brief moment in the spotlight to warn against dangers that threaten the health of the Earth and its habitants. It's also a great vehicle, activists have found, to get people involved in curbing those ills. The media bears a responsibility to collect and share these stories: TIME cover pieces on topics ranging from toxic waste to global warming have shed light on both the looming threats of pollution and the small victories of the environmental movement. In 1988, the magazine named "Endangered Earth" its Planet of the Year, in lieu of Man of the Year; the issue remains one of the most memorable in the magazine's history.

ASHINGTON Allergy sufferers, beware: Global warming could bring more hay fever, according to government research that shows ragweed produces significantly more pollen as carbon dioxide increases. The ubiquitous weed makes nearly twice as much pollen now as it did 100 years ago and will likely double its production again over the coming century with predicted increases in carbon dioxide levels, the Agriculture Department study suggests. "This research may help us better understand the troubling impact of high carbon dioxide levels on our environment and our health," Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said Tuesday. About 15 percent to 20 percent of the population has hay fever or allergic reactions to plant pollen, dust and other airborne particles and ragweed is the major cause of the problem in the fall. The plant is found all over the country and is particularly prevalent in the Northeast and Midwest. The pollen grains are so small that they can travel many miles.

Introduction
Welcome to the U.N. conference on climate control and greenhouse gas emissions! As you well know, one of the most serious issues facing you today is the destruction of the Earth's environment. Imagine, in the brief period of time since the industrial revolution scientists have noted that humans have actually been able to effect the weather patterns, temperature, and atmosphere of the Earth. Negative effects on biological organisms will inevitably follow if we do not reverse the trends that we have started.
The 167 nations of the Earth have come together this week to agree upon a way to stop the process of global warming. You and your fellow U.N. specialty teams on climate control are here to decide on a piece of legislation that would decrease the emissions of greenhouse gases 20% by the year 2005. Should you and your committee support the agreement or not?
The Task This quest challenges you to take on the roles of individuals attending a U.N. conference on climate control. After investigating the issues and questions facing your committee. You will present your conclusions at the conference and decide if you will endorse a piece of legislation requiring emission of greenhouse gases to be cut to 20% of current emissions by the year 2005? It is for you to decide!
  • Select a group of four people for your committee.
