Eco-Socialism: Threat to Liberty around the World

Although classical liberal ideas on the environment have not yet captured the popular mind, Smith demonstrates why socialist green ideas, as espoused by Al Gore, are doomed to failure.
Joint Letter to DOE on Transferable Credits

The Department of Energy's decision to drop early credits from its proposed rule to revise the voluntary reporting of greenhouse gases program was a policy breakthrough as significant as the Senate's defeat of the McCain-Lieberman bill and EPA's disavowal of authority to regulate carbon dioxide. In this comment to DOE, CEI and ten other pro-market groups explain why DOE made the right decision and should resist lobbying pressures to reinstate Kyoto credits.
Virtually Extinct

Despite wide media coverage, a study claiming that over a million species are doomed to extinction by 2050 is based on shaky, unscientific evidence.

For the past 140 years, U.S. oil and gas companies have been helping to improve the quality of life in the United States by making it possible for people to live in harmony with our nation's variable and, sometimes, not-so-friendly climate. Our products keep homes warm in winter and cool in summer. They help parents get their children to school and themselves to work. We supply the fuels that help farmers sow and reap their crops and transport them to market. Oil and natural gas are ingredients in medicines, crop fertilizers, fabrics, and plastics. Airplanes fly, trains roll down the tracks, and buses speed along the highway powered by our products. In short, the energy born of oil and natural gas products enables all of us to live our lives with relative ease and comfort, year-round, through all kinds of weather. Recently, scientists have been debating whether the burning of oil and natural gas products and coal are affecting the climate of our globe and

Few commercial interests ever make the kind of dramatic and ongoing progress achieved by the Hemp Industry. In spite of difficult and unique obstacles, this industry has positioned itself over the past decade to once again become a major global economic force in the 21st century. The Hemp Industries Association (HIA) is at the forefront of the drive for fair and equal treatment of Industrial Hemp and the instigation of a level playing field on which to compete with other natural resources and synthetics. The HIA seeks changes in government policies to encourage global production of Hemp as a raw material for industry. The HIA has been dedicated to education, industry development and accelerating expansion in the Hemp supply and the world market demand since 1992. Our members believe that hemp is one of our planet's most important natural resources and we advocate using it to its full potential.

A conference on the reform and revitalization of the United Nations
June 24 - 27, 2004
San Francisco State University
Being held in the birthplace of the United Nations, this historic "People's Conference" is a direct response to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's call for UN reform and his establishment of a sixteen-member international committee towards this end. The purpose of this conference is to prepare an Action Plan and an international media campaign for UN reform. Recent multiple crises "force us to ask ourselves whether the institutions and methods we are accustomed to... are in need of radical reform."

An atlas of the ice age Earth
The following ecosystems maps, compiled by Jonathan Adams, are still under development and as-yet unpublished. Their presentation here is intended to provoke comment and criticism which can lead to them being improved. They are based on simple compilations of the available information in the literature, relying heavily on the conclusions given by review papers for each subregion. Dates are given in radiocarbon years; the actual chronology in terms of 'real' years is still being worked out in the literature. Blocks of text are given here to accompany the map for each time slice. The cited references are listed in a separate document. References cited on the QEN pages, including those cited here

156. Land-Ocean Interactions In The Coastal Zone (LOICZ)
The LOICZ Project focuses on the area of the earth's surface where land, ocean and atmosphere meet and interact. The overall goal of this project is to determine at regional and global scales the nature of that dynamic interaction; how changes in various components of the Earth system are affecting coastal zones and altering their role in global cycles; to assess how future changes in these areas will affect their use by people; to provide a sound scientific basis for future integrated management of coastal areas on a sustainable basis.
