An Illustrative project Monitoring and understanding the mechanisms that destroy the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere has been the objective of four vast measurement exercises that the EU has carried out since 1991. In the middle of the Arctic winter, hundreds of scientists have been busy collecting and analysing chemical measurements taken with thousands of sensor balloons. Measurements have also been undertaken in situ, more than 20000 metres above the mountains of Scandinavia and the North Pole, using the laboratory aircraft, Geophysika. These European measuring campaigns have confirmed the extent of the recurrent thinning of the ozone layer. They have also provided a new understanding of the complex mechanisms of stratospheric chemistry - a science that is vital if we are to remedy this global change that poses a threat to the entire biosphere. T he Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is dedicated to increasing knowledge of the biological and physical processes that sustain life on earth. SERC's interdisciplinary research applies long-term studies to examine the ecological questions about landscapes of linked ecosystems, especially those impacted by human activities. SERC scientists use an experimental approach to discover mechanisms regulating the structure and dynamics of the environment.
L ocated on the shore of Chesapeake Bay, SERC uses the geographic features of the nation's largest estuary to investigate interconnections of aquatic, terrestrial and atmospheric components of complex landscapes. These studies are then compared on regional, continental and global scales. SERC develops innovative approaches and instrumentation to measure environmental change in four ecological levels: global change; landscape ecology; ecology of coastal ecosystems; and population and community ecology.
F or improved stewardship of the biosphere, SERC's research provides data, publications and expert consultation in support of conservation, environmental policy and management of natural resources. Connected to an international network of collaborators, SERC trains future generations of scientists to address ecological questions of the nation and globe. SERC's education programs in ecology demonstrate to the public the active process of research, and infuse scientific approaches for environmental issues through experiencing nature.

"In this book, a distinguished cast of leading researchers . . . have synthesized the recent developments in the field and their relevance for public health . . .". They "review studies from a wide range of Asian, African and Latin American countries and contrast the findings with those from Europe and North America . . ." and "describe various tools and systems for air pollution management". ". . .this book is essential reading for pollution and health policy-makers, researchers and others concerned with air pollution and health in developing countries".

CIESIN Thematic Guides
OZONE DEPLETION
AND GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
Welcome to the CIESIN thematic guide on ozone depletion issues. The purpose of this guide is to help you find selected key documents that pertain to the issue of ozone depletion: causes, human and environmental effects, and policy responses. The 1985 report of the discovery of an "ozone hole" over Antarctica focused attention on the idea that humans can have a significant impact on the global environment. This discovery, along with evidence that ozone is being lost at nearly all latitudes outside the tropics, has prompted much research into the causes of ozone depletion and the biological effects of increased ultraviolet radiation exposure. The potential effects on humans and the environment have led to international resolutions designed to gradually phase out production of ozone-depleting substances. As a result, the scientific and industrial communities have collaborated to find safe and economical replacements for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), the manmade chemicals implicated in ozone loss. This guide contains an Overview that provides general background on key concepts and issues related to ozone depletion. In addition, four subsections explore selected topics in greater detail:

91. Caribbean: Planning For Adaptation To Global Climate Change

This project is designed to support the participating Caribbean countries in preparing to cope with the adverse effects of global climate change, particularly sea level rise in coastal and marine areas through: vulnerability assessment, adaptation planning, and capacity building linked to adaptation planning. It is being executed through the cooperative effort of twelve CARICOM countries and participating institutions over a period of four years by a combination of national pilot/demonstration components and regional components. The project is financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through The World Bank as implementing agency and is executed by the Organization of American States (OAS). The project is coordinated in the Caribbean through the Regional Project Implementation Unit (RPIU), which was established by the UWI Centre for Environment and Development (UWICED)

96. GECP Research-Africa
Describes GECP research programs in Africa.
http://www.gecp.virginia.edu/resch/africa.htm
Africa has been identified as one of the initial focus regions for GECP research. The landscape of Africa is changing in response to a number of demographic, socioeconomic, and climatic forces. Changes in land cover and land use coupled with variability in climate directly affect the structure and function of African ecosystems and the goods and services these ecosystems supply, as well as impacting the composition of the regional and global atmosphere. GECP-Africa is focused on understanding these changes, their feedbacks, and their link to sustainability. The GECP-Africa approach is to combine satellite remote sensing, numerical modeling, and field-based process studies in an effort to improve understanding of the natural and anthropogenic systems in Africa and the processes of change at work in African regions. A major objective of the GECP effort is to develop some predictive capability with regard to these changes on both a regional and global scale. There are currently four components to GECP Africa : A brochure describing GECP-Africa is available upon request to the Global Environmental Change Program.
