DESIGN GALLERY OF STAINED GLASS ART WORK In the following pieces of art work, I use a variety of techniques to explore the properties of light transmission through coloured glass, drawing inspiration from the traditions of both the Middle East and Western Europe, adapting traditional designs to contemporary situations. In these pieces I aspire to the classical principles of harmony, unity and beauty by shaping and modifying the glass surface, painting with light to reveal multiple depths of pattern and decoration. Tools and Techniques. There are a number of techniques for engraving glass, these include:
  • Stipple engraving
    Line engraving

    Drill engraving

    Copper wheel engraving.
    ...
    Acid etching

  • All of these have their particular advantages and there are descriptions of each in this section.
My own techniques involve the use of Steel and Diamond point, line and stipple engraving and to some extent drill engraving. These are the main topics described at the start of this section. This section is under development, there is more to come. The techniques I use for decorating glass have developed since I started engraving in December of 2000, having started so recently I can hardly claim to be an expert. However, for what it is worth the following describes the tools and techniques I have discovered and explains some of the difficulties I have encountered. Although glass is a new medium for me I have been painting and drawing for more than thirty years. In many ways engraving is drawing on glass and I know I have picked up a few things about drawing over the years that have helped with this art form.

This class will deal with the fundamentals of hotshop work. However, the specific focus will be an exploration of ideas which involve both glass and metal. We will work in conjunction with the iron class to explore and investigate ways of combining metal with glass in both the hot and cold states. Technical and intellectual problem-solving will be emphasized through assignments, collaborations, and discussions. Some glass experience is recommended. Working with borosilicate glass, this class will start with the basics of flameworking and move into small sculptural work. We will cover color applications, component assembly, blowing, surface treatment, and combining glass with other media. I will encourage students to explore their ideas by joining simple glass forms with other materials. All levels. An On-Line Gallery of Hot Glass Sculptures and Blown Glass Vessels.
In Portland, Maine, at my hot glass studio and art glass gallery, you can watch me using a centuries-old hand blowing glass techniques to create aquariums and floral art glass designs, which appear to be in suspended animation. My glass work process involves traditional lamp working and murrini techniques. I make hand-pulled glass rods and glass canes in a variety of colors and then, use them to create the glass design elements inside each glass sculpture. Layering each piece of glass in the design - from the inside out - allows me to sculpt three-dimensional underwater seascapes and gardenscapes in glass. Finally, I encase the interior glass scene in clear, molten crystal. One of my fondest glass making career highlights includes the presentation of one of my pieces to Jacques Ives Cousteau as a "Spirit and Enrichment Award" by the Atlantic Center for the Arts (1991). You can find examples of my glass in museums in the United States, at

A vibrant art medium Stained glass is an extraordinary and vibrant medium for creating significant art, which can enrich personal and family living space as well as work and public places. used creatively In my work, I aim to create a subtlety and feeling of depth that is uncommon in this artform. This is why most people (including other stained glass artists) remark that they have never seen stained glass work like it. in personal artwork Each piece is made for a specific location and takes account of the sensibilities of the owner. As the hours and seasons progress, the light changes and the stained glass window responds - there is always something new to find in it. I enjoy meeting with people to discuss ideas for commissions, without obligation. Please call or email me: Robert Oddy (315) 446-0279

The Complete Guide to Glass Etching Custom glass etching can turn ordinary pieces of glass into works of art and can make ordinary stained glass pieces extraordinary.  You can personalize gifts or customize your own glass pieces.  With glass etching the possibilities are endless. Over the past decade, the art of glass etching has seen an incredible surge in interest from both consumers and artists.  Consumers find etched glass pieces to be an affordable yet beautiful alternative to stained glass and glass artists have found it to be an almost unlimited medium for artistic expression that is not subject to the design limitations of regular stained glass pieces.  Designs the would have never been attempted in stained glass are easily done in etched glass. Surface etching can be used on regular glass, stained-glass, flashed glass, mirrors, porcelain, wine glasses, mugs, ceramic tile and more, not to mention the many commercial applications.  Also, the techniques described in this guide can be applied to wood surfaces to create beautiful sand carved works of art on gorgeous hard woods. One of the great advantages to glass etching is the short time in which a piece can be completed.  Intricate art that looks as if it took days to design and create can actually be done in hours instead of days.  Many pieces can be completed from design to clean up in less than an hour.
