Basic Stained Glass Techniques
Learn to create the look of old world stained glass with your stamping projects. Choose art-stamps suitable for the stained glass look. Either a specially designed stained glass image or an image that has large interior spaces in the design. C H O O S I N G P A P E R BACKGROUND: Choose a colorful paper as background, such as gift bag, a glossy magazine page, a calendar page, etc. Stamp in black, and emboss with black powder. (We suggest using a black pigment ink because it is very wet, allowing the powders to stick well.) Remember to leave at least a ¾" margin around the outside of your stamped image so you have room to cut and mount the piece. Cut the image out and mount it on cardstock. VELLUM PAPER: Semi-transparent paper, also called drafting vellum. Stamp the design in black ink on vellum paper. Heat emboss using black powder. Turn the paper over and use Marvy or LePlume markers to color in the design. Because the vellum paper is slightly transparent light passes through the paper showing the color, even though you applied the color from the back side. Vellum can be used for a brass stencil design and mounted like stained glass. Try using colored pencils to emboss instead of your burnisher.

Czech Art Glass Making
Czech Art Glass has been made the same way for centuries. We are pleased to introduce you to our wonderful Czech art glass studios that continue to use the ancient art of hot-shaped and decorated glass techniques to create original contemporary Bohemian Art Glass. T he glass industry has its roots in the Czech Republic, formerly Czechoslovakia, from the early 15th Century. Local production throughout the country was characterized by a large number of small workshops that specialized in: blowing, engraving, cutting and painting of glass and crystal. The pictures of artisans working in the glass studio show furnaces, clothing and glassblowing techniques that have not significantly changed in 600 years. The following chronology of Bohemian Glass was found in BOHEMIAN GLASS , edited by Sylva Petrova and Jean-Luc Olivie and was first published in 1989.
  • Bohemia is in the crossroads of Europe near mineral rich mountains. North Bohemia, the land of glassworks, is located in Northern Czech Republic, north of Prague between the German and Polish Borders. Glass is made from a mixture of fluxes, ash, oxide of silicas and stabilizers, and melted at very high temperatures.

About The Artist ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Jeau Bishop is an emerging artist and designer creating unique one of a kind works from hot glass in Seattle, WA. Using elements of blown and sculpted glass, Jeau blends ancient and self taught skills to create stunning vessels and sculptures that truly represent the beauty and fluidity of liquid hot glass.
In 1993 Jeau moved to Seattle from Yakima, WA and a little more than a year later he began the study of basic glass working skills under Master Scott Darlington at Seattle Glass Blowing Studio. After only 16 hours of study under Scott Darlington, Jeau began to design and create his own original works of art.
Jeau started out his career in art glass with a focus on sculpted paperweights and simple classic blown vessels and forms he could design, create and sell so to fund his continued studies. This was Jeau’s approach for the first few years of his career allowing him to gain skills required to further the realm of possibilities within his work.
With only 16 hours of informal study, Jeau’s work has come of his own experimentation, self taught techniques and trial and error approach. With the internal urge to always create new work, Jeau’s many unique styles and original series have flourished. Many of his designs, he admits, came from simply making a mistake and then learning what happened so the next time he could then use that knowledge to experiment and create another original work of art.

  • There should be red navigation bars at the left and top of this page. If either is missing, click on Art History with Michelli to install the site.
  • All art-oriented sites are graphics intensive. That means they are often slow - sometimes painfully so. The only answer is to cultivate zen-like patience.
  • The sites I have put together will appear inside my site. You can get back to the stained glass pages by clicking on the yellow links above, or you can use the back button to go back one screen at a time.
  • Most printed publications about stained glass are strongly biassed in favour of Early Medieval glass. The nineteenth-century Clayton and Bell window to the right, for example, would be deplored as being too realistic, too dark, and covered with too much paint. This is extraordinary. The history of stained glass is the history of ingenious attempts to EXPAND the range of possibilities. Check out the historical technique links below to see this for yourself.

Subscription Back Issues Article Examples Current Issue ... Advertiser FAQ Contact Us Policies Privacy Click image for Current Issue GA: What’s involved in making a piece like “Polychromatic Sphere”?
MT: That’s an exercise in stick-toitiveness. There are about 112 figures in that piece. Each circumference is another layer of people. Those figures are the same all the way around each layer, but varied from layer to layer, six on the inside and 12 on the outside. There’s some nice negative space between the layers. This is one of the ways you can create scale — by putting lots of small parts together. One piece in this series has each figure different, created to relate to the space it goes into and to allow room for the next figure. But with the Polychromatic Sphere, I make all the figures ahead of time, then assemble them.
GA: You have been asked to present at the Glass Art Society conference in Corning, New York, this June. What will you present?
