William Morris Biography
William Morris was born in Carmel, California in 1957, and received his degrees from California State University at Chico and Central Washington University. He is considered to be one of the most gifted and innovative young glass artists in America today. He lives in Seattle where he originally worked as Dale Chihuly's gaffer (master glassblower) in the early 1980's, and has since maintained his own studio. Morris' work has been strongly influenced by his interest in archeology and ancient pagan cultures, and addresses the timeless relationship between humans and their enviroment. His work evokes images from a time when man was more in tune with nature, and is subliminally suggestive of ritual signifigance. Various works such as the Stonehenge Series, Artifact Vessels, Suspended Artifacts, and Rhyton Vessels illustrate symbolical, mythological influences. He also acknowledges the influence of Italian artists who have shared their knowledge of techniques for crafting glass, so essential to the realization of Morris' ideas into form. Another unique aspect of Morris' work is his treatment of surface texture, achieved by various techniques such as sprinkling powdered glass and minerals onto a blown surface, etching, and acid washing to achieve "ancient" and textural diversity.

training in "traditional" skills is why his flights of artistic fancy are so powerful.
Evolution of Simpson's Glass Art In more than 30 years of crafting traditional and contemporary glass art, the one constant in Josh Simpson's career has been his commitment to personal challenge. From his earliest self-student days in Vermont to his current international renown among glass artists, collectors and museums, he has never rested with just Doing One Thing Well. Other glass blowers and sculptors have based their careers on a single stylized signature achievement, repeated ad inifinitum, but that would bore Simpson. In the heady, idealistically inspired early 1970s, Simpson began blowing glass goblets and other venerable forms of blown glass while living in a teepee in Vermont and working with a homemade furnace in a nearby shack that he and his then partner glassblower Robert Burch constructed from salvaged materials. He was learning the rudiments of glasswork, producing some freeform pieces, and devoting himself to the ancient and difficult art of glass-blowing - the mainstay of his career. The Studio Glass movement was under way by then, and breakthroughs in furnace design allowed individual glass craftsmen all over the world to work independent from the factory system. The atmosphere was ripe for someone like Simpson to delve with American gusto into the arcane, European field of art glass.

http://www.fsus.fsu.edu/trialbyfire/studio.asp
The pioneers of glass art in the 1930s-1960s wanted to exemplify the notion that glass could be an art medium and that glass art objects were commercially viable. Some of these artists practiced warm glass techniques which did not involve extremely high temperatures and could be executed in small studios. Such artists include: Frederick Carder of the Steuben Glass Works (1930s-1950s) who worked with a small kiln; Edris Eckhardt who formed freestanding sculptures in her basement studio in the 1950s and 1960s; and Michael and Frances Higgins (a husband and wife team) who decorated tableware with brightly colored glass enamels, also in the 1960s. The tenuous acceptance of glass by the art world would not have occurred without the inclusion of glass as an art medium in college-level art programs. Many of these college professors were either attendees of the Toledo Workshops or were students of Littleton. To improve the techniques of glassmaking, a productive interaction between Europe and the U.S. took place at the World Congress of Craftsmen in 1964. The American approach to glassmaking was enthusiastic, but with lagging technical skills, while the European approach was technically accurate but in need of energizing. Further sharing of information occurred as artists from around the world began traveling to attend or to teach courses devoted to studio art glass.

Techniques/Construction Techniques of stained glass window construction were described by the monk Theophilus who wrote a how to for craftsmen about 1100 AD. It describes methods little changed over 900 years: "if you want to assemble simple windows, first mark out the dimensions of their length and breadth on a wooden board, then draw scroll work or anything else that pleases you, and select colors that are to be put in. Cut the glass and fit the pieces together with the grozing iron. Enclose them with lead cames..... and solder on both sides. Surround it with a wooden frame strengthened with nails and set it up in the place where you wish."

When "The Art of Painting on Glass" was first published in 1980, the publisher - Charles Scribner's Sons, New York - predicted that it was "destined to become the primary source book for artists who are turning to the medium of glass to express their own vision, feelings, and individuality."
In fact, the book became the universally accepted standard for glass painting techniques , widely sought, but rarely found after it went out of print.
