Art glass buttons techniques
I have 40 years of solid sewing experience, topped by 20 years of knitting (and a thin veneer of weaving :-)). While I love buttons and always seek out unusual ones, preferring them to overt jewelry, I've often been disappointed by glass buttons in the past. Which is why I decided to make my own when a better alternative presented itself. The problems are two-fold with the few handmade buttons available, and in my opinion both come down to the fact that everyone else makes them out of soft glass. It's very nice, very traditional and Venitian, and comes in a dizzying array of colors, which is commendable. It's also easy to work, and requires only a simple propane torch, lending itself easily to garage production. Unfortunately, in my opinion it makes buttons that are good only for collectors, and don't have a real functional life. First there is the obvious problem of fragility. I may be a slob, but I really don't want to worry about dropping my sweater on the floor, even the bathroom floor. Shattering on a simple fall is just not OK, I want to have to at least slam a car door right over it to lose it. For that matter, I don't want to have an attack if a Laundry Mistake is made and my beautiful buttons get thrown into the wash with the less fabulous stuff. I'm willing to go to fair lengths to ensure durability in what I make, lots of prewashing and seam reinforcing etc, but I'm not willing to change my whole way of life to coddle some fragile object. I also don't want to turn regular cleaning into an ordeal.

Glass Art - Associates Degree
Salem Community College’s new glass art program provides the two-year degree-seeking student with a solid foundation in using glass as a sculptural material. The program stresses the importance of technical ability and critical thinking as the basic tenets for object-making.
The curriculum is structured such that serious students who wish to further their education and pursue a bachelor’s degree in glass will have the necessary credits, in most instances, to transfer to a four-year art school.
SCC is unique, as it is one of a small number of community colleges that offers instruction in glass, is one of a few higher education institutions that provides comprehensive classes in flameworking and kiln-casting, and is the only school that offers a degree with a focus on such processes. In addition to flameworking, the glass art curriculum introduces students to basic kiln-working techniques and cold-working processes; students also have the opportunity to take elective courses in kiln-casting and pate de verre and advanced flameworking techniques. Students begin their degree with foundation courses in three-dimensional design and drawing. The general degree is augmented by a basic liberal arts curriculum. Independent study is available to second year students who wish to further their individual explorations and researchwith a faculty mentor. As well, a variety of scholarship and internship opportunities give select motivated students invaluable off-campus experience.

For over a decade this website was devoted specifically to the presentation of my million volt electric space-art on glass. Nothing has changed in that respect, as that endeavor continues with passion, expanding even into Sponsorship of J. P. Aerospace (see below) and more. Also, my site is expanding in every direction of my artistic interest, adding archival photographs over my life and career, plus other art-works - many under my original name of David Nelson - plus songs, poems, and Writings For fans, collectors, and friends who have faithfully followed my glass painting space-art career, some of you for three decades, you may be surprised here, since much of this material has never been seen. Around age ten I spent untold hours at my bedroom desk, clunking out stories on an antique typewriter that must have weighed half as much as a Volkswagen. Everyone said I should be a writer, so I became a painter. I still write obviously, and I still work in other ways than reverse glass, i.e., acrylic, oils, watercolor, and ink, on various materials including canvas, paper and wood. The fact is, I have finally reached that blessed state known to the aging as: NO MORE B.S. I hope you enjoy this more well "rounded" view of myself and my work. For those of you new to my high voltage space-art, some words for you concerning (that) ongoing obsession. Known as "reverse glass," or "verso" painting, these works are partially accomplished using millions of volts of electricity as a "paint brush". Begun in 1970, as a joint endeavor with artist
