41. Stained Glass Art By Gail Heinze-Milne
Stained glass art by Nova Scotia s Gail HeinzeMilne, including glasslamps, stained glass windows, mosaic mirrors, and inlay tables.

It's such a wonderful contradiction. How work of art that is both fine and delicate also possesses the strength to weather the elements for centuries, inspiring those who are yet to come. That's just one reason - among many - why Gail Heinze-Milne fell in love with glass. As with so many of Nova Scotia's artists and artisans, spending time with her is illuminating, no pun intended. She clearly loves her work, and she conveys this passion in a way that is elegant and engaging - just like the artwork she makes in her Aylesford studio, deep in Nova Scotia's bountiful Annapolis Valley. "I don't know what it is about glass," she says. "Glass really has two lives. In some ways, it's beyond painting. It has the life where it reflects light and it has the life where it transmits light. Both are just so different. "And now that I'm doing mosaic work, where you use the glass almost as you would use tile, I can see such richness in the patterns... and I'm even more amazed. I can spend hours just looking at glass. It's just so alive." It seems that Heinze-Milne can't take a vacation, even when she wants to. After spending two exhausting long weekends at Halifax's frantic Christmas craft markets, her colleagues were gently nursing thoughts of rest and relaxation. Gail was pining for her studio. Before the shows, she had been working

Dale Chihuly Biography
Dale Chihuly was born in Tacoma Washington, in 1941. He received his M.S. in sculpture in 1967 from the University of Wisconsin, where he studied glassblowing with Harvey Littleton. In 1969 he established the Glass Department at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he taught until 1983. In 1983 Chihuly returned to his native Pacific Northwest where he continued to develop his own work at the Pilchuck Glass School, which he had helped to found in 1971. Throughout the 1970's , influenced by the great glassblowing tradition of Murano, Chihuly experimented with the team approach to glassblowing. Working with a team of master glassblowers and assistants has enabled him to produce works in glass of a scale and quantity unimaginable working alone or with only one assistant. After an automobile accident in 1976 in which he lost the sight in his left eye, Chihuly relinquished the gaffer (chief glassblower) position and turned over that position to William Morris. Utilizing Morris' substantial talent and physical strength, Chihuly developed the large scale, multi-colored forms known as the MACCHIA series (Italian for "spotted.")

    Barbara Otterson: glass art
I have been creating art for over twenty years ever since escaping from corporate America. I started out working two dimensionally, but found it too limiting. I experimented with various media before finding my artistic home. I now create primarily in glass and sterling silver with occasional inclusions of brass, gold, copper and gemstones. I love the elasticity and fluidity of glass. Its free-flowing nature takes me to places I might not explore otherwise. Juxtaposed with this is the unyielding character of metal. It seeks to hold its own and challenges me to shape it to my will.
During the past few years I have found myself exploring the vessel as an art form more and more. There is something evocative, instinctual, and basic in objects made to contain or hold. These instincts trace back to our earliest beginnings and quests for survival. Our forbears made baskets and bowls to gather the things needed for survival and to convey them back to home and hearth.
I use the works I create to convey emotion: to communicate with those who view them. I frequently dream my designs as completed pieces. I then go to my studio to give them life in the waking world. In this way my work conveys my dreamsfiguratively and literally. My works can be found in the collections of private individuals, churches and corporations throughout the United States.

24"H x 16"W x 9"D The use of glass as art is a tradition that can be traced back at least to Roman times. But over the past 30 years, the studio art-glass movement has become a revolution, liberating the medium of glass, the means of expression, and the artisan from the factory and its utilitarian focus. The American studio art-glass movement began in Wisconsin in 1962 under the guidance of Harvey Littleton . Littleton is a teacher and mentor, a legend among artist-craftsmen whose palette is fire. His influence has been felt throughout America and, through his students, throughout the world. One student, Dale Chihuly , creator of sweeping forms of dazzling blown glass, is not only one of America's best known living glass artists, but also the person most responsible for the surging attention being given to the studio art-glass movement. Harvey Littleton and Dale Chihuly's influence and inspiration quickly produced fruit in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In Santa Fe, the art-glass movement began in 1968 with the opening of

is fascinated by both the visually stunning capacities of colored and shaped glass...and the tactile and morphic dimensions explored in the Tektites and copper baskets.
    Welcome to the Glass Gallery
    of Josh Simpson Contemporary Glass
Josh Simpson prefers to alternate among various glass art forms. He will work on Tektites or Copper Baskets for several weeks and then focus on New Mexico glass vases or "Megaplanets" for the next month. Such shifts in perspective help to keep his glass crafting fresh and on the forefront among glass artists. While his glass art categories may appear quite different from each other, aesthetic and conceptual elements run throughout his sculptural and blown glass. For example, he plays with aquatic, terrestrial, and extraterrestrial characteristics. The tension between freedom and constraint recurs. Simpson is fascinated by the vibrancy and intricacy of multi-colored glass as shown in the Planets Portals , and New Mexico glass work and by the tactile and morphic dimensions explored in the Tektites and Copper Baskets . Simpson is the antithesis of the artist who has a signature "thing." He finds wildly different styles of art glass necessary to express his sense of the world.
