Photographer Gary Braasch holding a 1932 photo of Broggi glacier near Huascaran in the Peruvian Andes, while rephotographing this receding glacier in 1999. Glaciers everywhere in the world (with a very few exceptions) have been shrinking throughout the 20th Century, a prime signal of rapid global warming. Loss of tropical glaciers is particularly rapid. This glacier, previously photographed by the Austrian Hans Kinzl, receded about one kilometer in 67 years.
Here is a series of other receding glaciers in "then and now" views (move cursor over old image to see current glacier position).
Glacier Ururashraju, at about 15,000 feet in Cordillera Blanca of Peru. Photographed in 1986 by Peruvian glaciologist Alcides Ames, whose studies and direction allowed Gary Braasch to rephotograph it in 1999. Retreat of about 500 M. Ames studies confirms the very rapid deglaciation of the Cordillera Blanca, which is the most ice-covered mountain range in the tropics.
Grinnell glacier, Glacier National Park, USA, which has receded almost out of sight. Photographed by a park photographer in 1911 and by Gary Braasch in 2000. Estimates by US National Park Service scientist Dan Fagre are that all but a few of the 30 glaciers in this Northern Rocky Mountains park will be gone by mid-century.

Deep in the heart of British Columbia in the Cariboo Mountains is the rare temperate rain forest, found nowhere else on earth. In the Quesnel Lake watershed, which drains some 12,000 sq km of land, lies this ancient forest, with trees over 1000 years old. Water is the essence of the sustainability for the vibrant and abundant life forms found here. Through spring and summer the high alpine explodes in a kaleidoscope of color as the wild flowers burst into full bloom - asters, glacier lilies, solomon’s seal, monkey flower, indian paint brush and an abundance of others. The rich ecosystems of the lush valley bottoms provide food and shelter for a myriad of species including water fowl, fur bearers, ungulates, bears, butterflies, and a whole other plant world. In the rivers of these valley bottoms, the bull trout, rainbow trout and dolly varden share their habitat with the salmon - sockeye, pinks, coho and chinook. This natural place - remote, wild and endlessly green - refreshes your soul.

Why study glaciers? Glaciologists study about glaciers because they want to see how far the glaciers move. Also they spend long days and nights on these frozen fields "reading" the ice in search of clues to the history of the world's past climates. The melting of a glacier can become a source of water for cities and farms that need irrigation. Over three-fourths of the world's fresh water is frozen into glacier ice. If all the glaciers of the world melted, the sea level would rise. Many cities by the ocean now could be covered up with ocean water and destroyed. People should study glaciers because it helps us plan for the future. We also understand more about the Earth's past history. By Anthony, Frank, Lindsey and Mary

Glaciers and Sea Ice Endangered by Rising Temperatures
Janet Larsen
By 2020, the snows of Kilimanjaro may exist only in old photographs. The glaciers in Montana's Glacier National Park could disappear by 2030. And by mid-century, the Arctic Sea may be completely ice-free during summertime. As the earth's temperature has risen in recent decades, the earth's ice cover has begun to melt. And that melting is accelerating. In both 2002 and 2003, the Northern Hemisphere registered record-low sea ice cover. New satellite data show the Arctic region warming more during the 1990s than during the 1980s, with Arctic Sea ice now melting by up to 15 percent per decade. The long-sought Northwest Passage, a dream of early explorers, could become our nightmare. The loss of Arctic Sea ice could alter ocean circulation patterns and trigger changes in global climate patterns. On the opposite end of the globe, Southern Ocean sea ice floating near Antarctica has shrunk by some 20 percent since 1950. This unprecedented melting of sea ice corroborates records showing that the regional air temperature has increased by 2.5 degrees Celsius (4.5 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1950.

laciers - Frozen in Time
Glaciers cover approximately 30,000 square miles - or 5.1 percent - of Alaska, which is 128 times more area covered by glaciers than in the rest of the United States. There are an estimated 100,000 glaciers in Alaska, ranging from tiny cirque glaciers to huge valley glaciers. Glaciers are formed where, over a number of years, more snow falls than melts. Alaska's glaciers fall roughly into five general categories: alpine, valley, piedmont, ice fields and icecaps. Alpine (mountain and cirque) glaciers head high on the slopes of mountains and plateaus. Valley glaciers are an overflowing accumulation of ice from mountain or plateau basins. Piedmont glaciers form when one or more glaciers join to form a fan-shaped ice mass at the foot of a mountain range. Ice fields develop when large valley glaciers interconnect, leaving only the highest peaks and ridges to rise above the ice surface. Icecaps are smaller snow and ice-filled basins or plateaus. The greatest concentrations of glaciers are in the Alaska Range, Wrangell Mountains and the coastal ranges of the Chugach, Coast, Kenai and Saint Elias mountains, where annual precipitation is high. Most of Alaska's major rivers originate at glaciers. About three-fourths of all the fresh water in Alaska is stored as glacial ice. This is many times greater than the volume of water stored in all the state's lakes, ponds, rivers and reservoirs. Alaska's better known glaciers accessible by road are: Worthington and Black Rapids on the Richardson Highway, Matanuska on the Glenn Highway, Portage on the Seward Highway and Mendenhall on the Glacier Highway. In addition Childs and Sheridan glaciers may be reached by car from Cordova, and Valdez Glacier is only a few miles from Valdez. The terminus of Muldrow glacier in Denali National Park and Preserve is visible at a distance along several miles of the park road. There are also many spectacular glaciers in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and in Prince William Sound which are accessible by tour boat.

Introduction
Glaciers and ice caps occupy about 10% of the Earth's continental area today. They interact with the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere on time spans ranging from hours to millenia. Glaciers are, thus, key components of the Earth's environmental system. GAGE work group of the INQUA Commission on Glaciation was invited to submit glaciers and ice caps for consideration to include in the Landsat 7 global archive. These glaciers will be considered because of their potential for scientific studies on global change. Glaciers and ice caps have experienced negative mass balances and have been retreating since the end of the Little Ice Age in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a general condition for glaciers of all types in nearly all geographic locations, with the possible exception of Antarctica. The local timing of deglaciation may vary considerably, however, depending on many factors as detailed below. Comparison of Response Rates for Glaciers in Different Settings Rapid Response Slow Response High altitude (mountains) Low altitude (lowlands) Continental interiors Maritime (islands and coasts) Mid-latitude (temperate) Atlantic Ocean regime Pacific Ocean regime Northern hemisphere Southern hemisphere The end of the Little Ice Age occurred earliestmid-1800sfor interior mountains of northern mid-latitudes, such as the European Alps, and took place latestearly 1900son islands of the South Pacific, as in New Zealand. The end of the Little Ice Age is just beginning to have an effect in Antarctica. Meanwhile, the late 20th century has been a period of positive mass balance and expansions for small glaciers in many places, for example Iceland and Norway. Since the end of the Little Ice Age, glaciers have experienced many lesser periods of ice advance and retreat that happened at different times in separate parts of the world. This scenario indicates that global climatic change takes place with distinct regional variations. These are probably the results of lag effects caused by differences in heat transfer and storage for the Earth's surface.
