GLIMS Update: Norway meeting; then New Zealand GLIMS Update: request for list of GLIMS abstracts/papers GLIMS Update: GLIMS Workshop in Oslo, Norway Previous Updates GLIMS (Global Land Ice Measurements from Space) is a project designed to monitor the world's glaciers primarily using data from the ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and reflection Radiometer) instrument aboard the EOS Terra spacecraft, launched in December, 1999. "Glim" is an archaic Scottish term that means "a passing look; a glimpse; as much as is seen at a glance." In a future historical perspective, we may well look back on GLIMS and other early-21 st Century remote-sensing of Earth's glaciers as a glim of a passing or changing phenomenon. We are continuing to acquire an annual image (clouds permitting) of all the world's glaciers and to build the infrastructure for GLIMS:
  • a set of software tools that we can apply to the tracking of glaciers'
areal extent location of snow line at the end of the melt season velocity field location of terminus
a network of centers around the world that will monitor the glaciers in their regions

Study finds Alaska glaciers melting at higher rate
Researchers surveyed volume and area changes across Alaska's glacier regions by plane and found the glaciers' melt rate was on the rise. From Natalie Pawelski CNN Sci-Tech (CNN) A new study indicates that glaciers in Alaska are melting faster than previously thought, providing further evidence of global warming, researchers said Thursday. Scientists have long warned that global warming when heat-trapping gases force atmospheric temperatures to rise could eventually raise sea levels to a dangerous point by melting ice sheets and glaciers. CNN NewsPass VIDEO CNN's Natalie Pawelski reports a new study indicates that glaciers in Alaska are melting faster than previously thought (July 18) Play video "The whole issue of global climate change is important to everyone," said glacier expert Anthony Arendt of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. "The whole issue of sea-level change affects people who live near the coast quite directly. Just small changes in sea level can cause very large incursions of water up along the coast and can destroy valuable property there. It can move people away from their homes."

What is Glaciology?
The cryosphere plays an important active and passive role in the climate system. On one hand the global ice and snow covered area varies on seasonal, interdecadal and millenial time scales modulating the radiation budget and hydrological cycle of the earth. On the other hand polar ice sheets and cold alpine glaciers represent unique archives of climatic change, which provide a multitude of information on paleoclimatic (temperature, precipitation, circulation) and paleoatmospheric (aerosol concentration, trace gas abundance) conditions. Both the reconstruction of ice sheet volume and the mass balance of glaciers by means of modelling, geophysical reconnaissance methods as well as field studies and the unraveling of climatic information stored in the ice matrix and in air bubble enclosures of polar ice cores are the main scientific objectives of the glaciology department at AWI. *realplayer 8 is needed for viewing the movie Responsible: Johannes Freitag and Webmaster

MILAN, Italy (Reuters) The world's glaciers could melt within a century if global warming accelerates, leaving billions of people short of water and some islanders without a home, environmentalists said. "Unless governments take urgent action to prevent global warming, billions of people worldwide may face severe water shortages as a result of the alarming melting rate of glaciers, the WWF group said in a report Thursday. It said human impact on the climate was melting glaciers from the Andes to the Himalayas, bringing longer-term threats of higher sea levels that could swamp island states. Officials from 180 nations will meet in Milan on December 1-12 to discuss international efforts to rein in a rise in global temperatures, blamed by scientists on emissions of gases from factories and cars that are blanketing the planet.

Behavior of World's Glaciers Fails to Prove Global Warming Theory
by John Carlisle
Global warming theory proponents have resorted to the politics of fear to drive their point home. They argue that man-made greenhouse gases are already causing the world's glaciers to melt, causing sea levels to rise and threatening humanity with a multitude of economic and environmental calamities. A recent Smithsonian Institution exhibit on climate change, for instance, included a depiction of the Washington Monument partially submerged in the Atlantic Ocean, leaving visitors with the distinct impression that we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions now if we want our descendants to be able to visit the famous monument. But such scenarios belong in the realm of science fiction, not science fact. Glaciers Are Inaccurate Barometers of Climate Change Global warming theorists argue that examples of receding glaciers, primarily those located in the mid-latitude regions of the planet, provide evidence that climate change caused by human activities is underway. But glaciers are poor barometers of global climate change. Glaciers are influenced by a variety of local and regional natural phenomena that scientists do not fully comprehend. Besides temperature changes, glaciers also respond to changes in the amount and type of precipitation, changes in sea level and changes in ocean circulation patterns.1 As a result, glaciers do not necessarily advance during colder weather and retreat during warmer weather.

Alaskan glaciers raise sea level
Mountain melt-water is rising fast.
19 July 2002 PHILIP BALL The Alaskan Columbia Glacier: on the verge of collapse? Alaskan glaciers have thinned twice as fast over the past 5 years as during the preceding four decades, say US researchers. Their melting is making the largest contribution to rising sea levels of any ice-bound region on Earth Understanding and predicting sea level rise is vital. Some have forecast flooded coasts and submerged islands within the next hundred years. Alaska's mountain glaciers cover barely 1% of the surface area of the great Greenland ice sheet. Yet the new findings suggest that their melt-water may account for up to 9% of the total rise in sea level over the past 50 years. Global average sea level has risen by around 3 millimetres each year over the past decade. Melting of the Alaskan glaciers has previously been estimated to account for only a very small proportion of this - perhaps just 0.02 millimetres per year. The new reckoning ups that number by more than a factor of ten. Ice work Anthony Arendt and co-workers at the University of Alaska reached these conclusions by analysing measurements of glacier thickness made since the mid-1950s. Since 1999, the researchers have been re-measuring the ice profiles of 28 glaciers last studied between 1993 and 1996.

Tropical glaciers in retreat
Many equatorial mountaintops will soon be ice-free.
19 February 2001 JOHN WHITFIELD The Qori Kalis Glacier, Peru , in 1978 (top) and the same view in 2000, with a 10-acre lake forming at the ice margin. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania could be ice-free by 2020. The ice on mountain tops around the tropics is shrinking at an alarming rate, Lonnie Thompson, a climate researcher at Ohio State University, Columbus, told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Francisco this week. This may well dent Kilimanjaro's status as a tourist attraction, and people in surrounding communities who rely on the mountain's glaciers to release water during the dry season will suffer. Similar effects will be seen in Peru, where the meltwater from Andean glaciers generates hydroelectric power. Over the past 25 years, Thompson has been documenting the impact of climate change on ice packs near the equator. "These tropical glaciers are probably the most sensitive sites on Earth to [climate] change," he says. He has also reconstructed past climates by drilling into the ice. This shows that, in Tibet, the past 200 years that is, since the Industrial Revolution have been the warmest in the past 140 centuries.

Glaciers may not have driven modern bird evolution
Jeff Poling
For decades, neontologists have followed a widely accepted theory about the appearance of many North American animal species. The theory states that toward the end of the last period of widespread glaciation (not to be confused with the end of the last Ice Age, which has not yet ended), the final southward thrust of the North American glacier geographically isolated populations of species. These isolated pockets then evolved separately, evolving into many of the species known today. This theory was challenged in the September 12, 1997, issue of the journal Science John Klicka and Dr. Robert Zink, evolutionary biologists at the J. F. Bell Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, studied 35 pairs of bird species considered to be the best examples of species split by the geographical isolation caused by the glaciers. The scientists used mitochondrial DNA sequences to estimate when each pair of species diverged. The results suggest that rather than splitting 100,000 to 250,000 years ago, the time of the last widespread glaciation, they split at times distributed uniformly over a large period of time starting 5 million years ago. The average time for divergence was 2.5 million years ago. Klicka, a graduate student, and Zink used new data from their own molecular studies as well as data from previous studies done by themselves and other researchers to test their hypotheses. Examining each of the 35 pairs of bird species separately, they counted the number of differences between each pair's mitochondrial DNA sequences. Current DNA molecular-clock theories state that the more recently two species diverged, the more similar their DNA should be. The longer the time since they became isolated as distinct species, the greater the number of genetic differences that should have accumulated between them.
