Alpine Adventures began glacier flights 1986
We now operate 8 modern turbine helicopters from bases in Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, Lake Tekapo, Kaikoura and Makarora.
We are the only locally owned operator , of three licensees, allowed to land on the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers , in the Westland National Park, so our services are in the Mount Cook region.
Our Franz Josef office has a Cafe, Souvenir Shop, Helicopter Flight Booking office, Guided Glacier Walks, Fishing Tours and Guided Trophy Hunting.
Within our Alpine Adventures Centre Building is a Movie theatre showing "Flowing West" 20 minute sensory journey through glacier country that shows the Glacier region. Playing on a "HELIMAX" screen with "SONY" dynamic digital sound. This is the only way to see the Glaciers on a rainy day!

MOUNT KILIMANJARO, Tanzania (CNN) Fires set by farmers to clear land for crops are hastening glacial melting on Mount Kilimanjaro, and one scientist predicts that all snow will be gone from Africa's highest peak by 2020. The melting, a loss of about 300 cubic meters a month, is irreversible and will have devastating impact on the terrain and on tourism. Each year, about 10,000 tourists scale Kilimanjaro's famous peak. Global warming makes the melting inevitable, but it would be slower if farmers stopped the burning which poses additional threats to the forests and ecosystem.

In the first quarter of Grade 6 students study the topic of water. In Social Studies we look at the ocean crisis, overfishing, pollution, the world's water and so on, and at the same time in Science we do experiments with water. In 1996, for the first time, students also had four periods of week of Information Technology, where they were taught information literacy and research skills as well as computer literacy. Students spent some time in the classroom, some time in the library and some time in the computer lab. Our first major research topic was entitled The Ocean Project . Students had to choose a topic to do with water, and had to look at the topic from both a science and social studies point of view. Here is a report on Icebergs and Glaciers . produced by two of the students.

Alaska glaciers melting at higher rate - study
Researchers surveyed volume and area changes across Alaska's glacier regions From Natalie Pawelski CNN Sci-Tech (CNN) A new study indicates that glaciers in Alaska are melting faster than previously thought, providing further evidence of global warming, researchers said Thursday. Scientists have long warned that global warming when heat-trapping gases force atmospheric temperatures to rise could eventually raise sea levels to a dangerous point by melting ice sheets and glaciers. "The whole issue of global climate change is important to everyone," said glacier expert Anthony Arendt of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. "The whole issue of sea-level change affects people who live near the coast quite directly. Just small changes in sea level can cause very large incursions of water up along the coast and can destroy valuable property there. It can move people away from their homes." glaciers. By Natalie Gabriella. What is a glacier? glaciers, don t juststay in one place all the time, even though they re frozen solid.
    http://www.internet-at-work.com/hos_mcgrane/ocean/oglacier.html
[Ocean Menu] [Icebergs] Glaciers What is a glacier? All a glacier really is, is a whole lot of snow. Like all mountains have snow on them? No, a glacier isn't the mountain after it has snowed, but after the snow has frozen. A glacier can can be enormous up to 440 miles long. In fact that is the largest glacier on earth. It's called the Lambert glacier and is located in Antarctica. Glaciers, don't just stay in one place all the time, even though they're frozen solid. They don't exactly fly about, but nevertheless they do move. The fastest moving glacier is called Jakobshavn and it moves 62 feet in a day. It doesn't sound like a lot, though it really is, because the only way they can move is by sliding down a thin layer of water that is between the ice and the mountain, or they 'creep' which is when the top layer of ice moves to the bottom eventually making a frozen river sort of thing all the way down the mountain. A glacier can be a lot more complicated then that, yet this is, in basic, what it really is.
    How are glaciers formed?

In its 2001 assessment, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that, “an increasing body of observations gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system." Although factors other than climate may have intensified the severity of some of the events on the map, scientists predict such problems will increase if emissions of heat-trapping gases are not brought under control.

ICE MELT Mountain glaciers are retreating in many parts of the world and earlier studies have shown the melting high altitude ice is helping to boost a gradual rise sea level.
The researchers estimate that water from the Patagonia ice fields is contributing about 9 percent of the sea level rise caused by the melting of mountain glaciers. Alaska's contribution to water reaching the sea from mountain glaciers is estimated at about 30 percent. YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Glaciers Patagonia Research or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? WASHINGTON (AP) Melting of glaciers in the Patagonian ice fields of southern Argentina and Chile has doubled in recent years, caused by higher temperatures, lower snowfall and a more rapid breaking of icebergs, a study suggests. Using satellites from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Defense Department, researchers measured the loss from two ice fields on the southern tip of South America and found that the rate of melting doubled from 1995 to 2000 when compared with earlier measurements.

    Glaciers in Alaska
Icefields and an estimated 100,000 glaciers cover 5 percent of Alaska's surface and they are easily viewed by visitors to Juneau, Valdez, Whittier, Seward , Anchorage or the Matanuska Valley. Cruises that take visitors close to the face of tidewater glaciers offer visitors the opportunity of watching them calve icebergs into the sea. Columbia Glacier , one of the largest tidewater glaciers in the state, can be viewed from boats departing from Valdez or Whittier. A terminal moraine keeps boats some distance from the glacier's face. The glacier can also sometimes be seen from the air on flights between Seattle or Juneau and Anchorage. On flights north, request a window seat on the right side of the plane. The Harding Icefield in Kenai Fjords National Park covers 300 square miles. Its tidewater glaciers can be viewed from tour boats that depart from Seward's small boat harbor. The face of an inland glacier, Exit Glacier, can be approached on trails from a parking lot at the end of Exit Glacier Road, which intersects the Seward Highway just north of Seward. Portage Glacier Mendenhall Glacier , just north of Juneau, is the most accessible of the glaciers in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Icefield. It can be reached on the Glacier Highway. Other glaciers in the area can be viewed on boat or flightseeing tours or by helicopter.

    http://www.eoascientific.com/interactive/glaciers/glaciers.html
General Science Earth Ocean Atmosphere ... Space Credits EOA Home Glaciers Glaciers begin to form when snow remains in the same area year-round and transforms into ice. New layers of snow bury and compress the previous layers. The compression forces the icy snow to re-crystallize, forming grains similar in size and shape to cane sugar. Gradually the grains grow larger and the air pockets between the grains get smaller and more packed, increasing its overall density. At 20 meters (65 feet) the sheer weight of the mass causes the lowest portions to deform into sliding layers, and the glacier begins to flow. Learn more through this interactive.
