A journey through a country bursting with new wealth but besotted by corruption and threatened by a split between its prosperous cities and its stagnant rural areas
    by Xiao-huang Yin

R With capitalism unleashed and investment from overseas stimulating the economy, China has become a land of opportunity. Rags-to-riches success stories fill people's conversation. Zhao Zhangguang, an herbalist whose "101" hair-stimulating lotion has sold extremely well around the world, has become one of China's richest men. In 1993 alone his net profits reached up to $50 million. Even some of my relatives have become millionaires. A distant cousin who was a high school teacher until 1986 told me modestly that he had made "a little money" by opening a factory that produces bristle brushes for export to America. He drove me to his new summer house in his new Mercedes-Benz 500SEL, one of his three luxury cars. "This is China's Gilded Age," a former colleague of mine commented sarcastically. "These Chinese Carnegies and Rockefellers are more successful than their American counterparts they made more money within a shorter time." To be sure, not everyone gets rich quick, but the economic boom has brought most urban Chinese a huge improvement in their standard of living. Color TV sets, refrigerators, and VCRs, considered luxuries when I lived in China, can be found in almost every working-class urban household at least in the prosperous coastal cities. For the first time in my life I saw some overweight people in my home town of Yangzhou. With fax machines, satellite television, computer modems, and radio talk shows, the Chinese are well informed about events in the outside world. They may even know as much as the average American about happenings in the United States. Hillary Clinton's health-insurance program, the gay-rights movement, and daily prices on the U.S. stock exchanges are familiar matters throughout China.

Are we living in a new "Gilded Age" of income inequality?
19-Dec-2003 Dear Cecil: Lately I've been hearing that the difference between the haves and have-nots in the U.S. has been increasing, and that unequal distribution of incomes has been approaching that of the Gilded Age. Is this literally true? While I understand that Bill Gates and corporate CEOs and such are taking home some serious cash, are we really seeing a return to the era of the robber barons, when a tiny percentage of the population controlled a huge chunk of the national wealth? Betsy Schorsch, Chicago Cecil replies: Questions like this always irritate the man of science (and no doubt the woman too) because the answer depends on how the issue is framed. Is the degree of inequality in the distribution of income "approaching" that of the Gilded Age? Sure. If I take one step south I'm approaching Patagonia, too. Doesn't mean I'm necessarily close. So let's tighten things up a bit. On November 20, 2003, the New York Review of Books contained the following statement by Paul Krugman: "Recent statistics confirm that income inequality in the United States has returned to Gilded Age levels." Krugman, a

Writing in Barrons, Martin Fridson is puzzled at the Bush administration's apparent attachment to policies to boost the national savings rate that are unlikely to do so. As Bush CEA chair Greg Mankiw puts it, in general the best way to boost the national savings rate is not to monkey with the tax code but to reduce the deficitor even run a surplus. To me there's no mystery: the object is to tilt the distribution of wealth further in the direction of the $200,000+ a year household income crowd. Barron's Online - Economic Beat A popular college economics textbook published in 2001 points out that a savings subsidy may even backfire. The one-time Harvard professor who wrote this textbook is Gregory Mankiw. In his current job as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, Mankiw is expected to exhibit enthusiasm for the President's policies. When recently asked about Bush's aim to boost savings, though, the most emphatic comment he could muster was, "In the longer term, there are a lot of economists who argue that the national saving rate is too low." Mankiw's remark leaves it unclear whether he is among those economists. [He is] His reference to the "national saving rate" the sum of the public and private savings rates is significant, though. Conservative backlash over reduced public saving that is, the mounting federal deficit is probably the most formidable political obstacle to enactment of new savings incentives.

The Missionary Generation were the idealists of the World War Cycle. As they approached adulthood, around 1890, the student missionary movement was launched and protests and labor violence was the norm. This cultural bonfire of a spiritual event lasted until just after the turn of the century. Many of our present religious groups trace their roots to those times. The modern women's movement, temperance and the labor movements also began then. A civil generation, the G.I.'s, emerged from those turbulent times to conquer the Great Depression and to fight the greatest war, WWII. These civic events are still fresh in our conscience since many of the participants are still with us.

    Industrialization
In the 1870's, the US became a leading Industrial power. Advances in technology drove American Industrialization. Industrialization caused the growth of American cities and the decline of the importance of Agriculture. Though Industrialization caused many long-term positives, it did cause problems in the short-term. Rich farmers who could afford new machinery grew even richer, while poorer farmers were forced to move into urban areas as they could not compete in the Agricultural sector. Meanwhile, in factories, laborers had to work in unsafe conditions. Laborers and companies often clashed over wages, sanitary conditions, working hours, benefits, and several other issues. Laborers organized themselves into unions to negotiate with companies. The companies, however, attempted to shut down labor unions. Some imposed yellow dog contracts , under which an employer could dismiss a worker who participated in union activity.
