Gila Monster Taxonomy
Order: Squamata
Family: Helodermatidae
Genus/species: Heloderma suspectum Description
The Gila monster is one of only two species of venomous lizards (i's cousin, the Mexican beaded lizard, is the other). It can bite quickly and hold on tenaciously. Rather than injecting venom through hollow fangs like venomous snakes do, Gilas have enlarged, grooved teeth in their lower jaw. When they bite, their powerful jaws chew the venom in through capillary action along the grooves in these teeth. Gila monster venom is about as toxic as that of a western diamondback rattlesnake. However, a relatively small amount of venom is introduced in a Gila bite. The dorsal coloration of the Gila monster is black with pink or orange. In the southern subspecies, the reticulated Gila monster, the light markings, or bands, are broken up to form a reticulated pattern. In the northern subspecies, the banded Gila monster, the light markings generally form an unbroken band across the back.

Gila Monster
(pronounced: Hee-la)
Heloderma suspectum
"Mollie"
The scientific name, Heloderma , is derived from the Greek words "helos" and "derma" and simply means "studded skin." The species name, suspectum , was given because an early biologist suspected the animal to be poisonous based on the grooved teeth. And indeed, the Gila Monster is one of only 2 venomous lizards in the world, the other being the Mexican Beaded Lizard. Gila Monsters are hatched from eggs. They are America's largest lizard, usually attaining a length of 16 to 20 inches. (The record is 22 1/2 inches.) They are also the slowest moving lizard in the country making them easy victims for passing automobiles or mean natured humans. They have few natural predators. This specimen was born at the San Diego Zoo in California. Gila Monsters in captivity can live for 20 to 30 years. Because of their slow nature, Gila Monsters usually feed on baby mammals, birds or animal eggs. "Mollie" the gila monster eats small rats here at the Rattlesnake Museum. Room 2 Crocker Farm School - Mrs. Streeter's Class Room 2's Writing Animal Reports Drawing Map ... Comments Gila Monsters by Luke The Gila Monster is one of only two poisonous lizards in the world! The only other poisonous lizard is the Mexican Beaded Lizard, but I'm going to just concentrate on the Gila Monster. My animal's name is the Gila Monster (pronounced Hee-la). It belongs to a group called the reptiles . It definitely doesn't breathe through gills! It breathes through its lungs. Its scientific name is Heloderma suspectum . It doesn't have a nickname, and it's cold-blooded. Its young are born from an egg. It can't swim because its food is where it lives and there's not much water there. The Mexican beaded lizard is closely related to the Gila Monster. Most Gila Monsters have lots of patterns on their backs. The color pattern is black with yellow, orange or pink spots. It is covered in scales, just because most reptiles have scales. They usually grow to about two to three feet, and weigh up to about two to three pounds. Ten to twelve eggs are hatched at a time. It's approximate life span is twenty years. The Gila Monster lives in South Western United States. States such as, California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico. This animal the Gila Monster lives in the desert. Well, actually any hot, dry, dark, sandy places.

By Susan Tweit Last updated on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 Gila Monster. Photo courtesy Byron Wright New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service down a wash in the Sonoran Desert, I rounded a corner and stopped abruptly. Atop a boulder directly in front of me was a truly enormous lizard. Its warty black and pink skin covered a body as large around as my forearm, and nearly two feet long, with a fat tail and stumpy legs. The lizard opened its mouth, revealing a double row of sharp, pointed teeth, and hissed loudly. I jumped backwards, startled: a Gila monster! Gila monsters and their cousins, Mexican beaded lizards, are the only two venomous lizards in the world. These "monstruos" - monsters, in Spanish - rely on a very simple venom-dispensing method. They bite their victim and hold fast; glands under the skin in their lower jaw secrete venom, which drips into the wound. Gila monster venom can kill small animals. In humans, the venom is severely painful, and causes swelling, nausea, and weakness, but it is not fatal. Gila monsters are deceptive. They look and sound horrific, but these

APPENDIX E
POISONOUS LIZARDS
Gila monster
Heloderma suspectum Description: Robust, with a large head and a heavy tail. Its body is covered with beadlike scales. It is capable of storing fat against lean times when food is scarce. Its color is striking in rich blacks laced with yellow or pinkish scales. Characteristics: Not an aggressive lizard, but it is ready to defend itself when provoked. If approached too closely, it will turn toward the intruder with its mouth open. If it bites, it hangs on tenaciously and must be pried off. Its venom glands and grooved teeth are on its bottom jaw. Habitat: Found in arid areas, coming out at night or early morning hours in search of small rodents and bird eggs. During the heat of the day it stays under brush or rocks. Length: Average 30 centimeters, maximum 50 centimeters. Distribution: Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, northern Mexico, and extreme corner of southeast California. Mexican beaded lizard
Heloderma horridum Description: Less colorful than its cousin, the gila monster. It has black or pale yellow bands or is entirely black. Characteristics: Very strong legs let this lizard crawl over rocks and dig burrows. It is short-tempered. It will turn and open its mouth in a threatening manner when molested. Its venom is hemotoxic and potentially dangerous to man.

Gila Monster
Background:
The gila monster and the closely related Mexican beaded lizard are the only kown venomous lizards in the world. These heavy bodied lizards are easily distinguished from nonvenomous species by the bead-like surface and yellow or coral colored pattern of their skin. They are described as docile reptiles, not prone to attacking humans unless significantly agitated. State laws protect these fascinating animals from being captured or held in any manner. Gila monsters have the well-earned reputation of delivering a tenacious bite. Most serious envenomations have occurred when the lower jaws have secured a firm hold on the victim for several minutes. These large reptiles have a well-deserved reputation for clamping down on a victim with its teeth and not letting go!
The bite is described as extremely painful, although pain is generally confined to the area of the bite initially. Victims may also experience localized swelling, nausea, vomiting, hypertension, weakness, faintness, excessive persperation, chills, and fever. When bitten, it is important to disengage the lizard as soon as possible. This may be done by placing a strong stick between the bitten part and the back of the lizard's mouth and pushing against the rear of the jaw. If this doesn't work, emersion in water may make it release its hold. The brittle teeth of the gila monster may remain imbedded in the wound and must be removed by a medical professional.
