http://www.desertmuseum.org/books/gila.html

Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) Order: Squamata
Family: Helodermatidae (venomous beaded lizards)
Spanish name: escorpión Distinguishing Features Range The bulk of this lizard’s range is in western and southern Arizona, continuing to southern Sonora, Mexico, but it can also be found in extreme southeastern California, southern Nevada, extreme southwestern Utah, and southwestern New Mexico. Habitat The Gila monster is most commonly found in mountain foothills dominated by saguaros and palo verde trees. It also uses washes that extend down into valleys. It may use burrows dug by other animals, or construct burrows of its own. Life History Comments Gila monsters are one of only two venomous lizards known to occur in the world. The other, the beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum), is found in southern Sonora and further south in thornscrub and tropical deciduous forest. Venom is produced in glands in the lower jaw and expressed along grooved teeth as the animal bites. Once the lizard bites, it generally holds on and chews more of the venom into its victim. Though the bite is rarely life-threatening to humans, it may cause pain, edema, bleeding, nausea and vomiting. A Gila monster’s venom is believed to be a defensive weapon. The animal probably does not need venom to subdue its defenseless prey and the intense pain caused by the venom readily causes a predator to change its mind. Before biting, the lizard will hiss, gape, and back away from its would-be attacker. If these efforts fail, it will bite with amazing speed. Gila monsters should not be handled!

The gila monster lizard
There are only two types of poisonous lizards in the world. The Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) is one of them. It lives in the Southwestern deserts of the United States, specifically in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. They can be found in gravelly and sandy soils, especially in areas with shrubs and some moisture. They are found under rocks, in the burrows of other animals, and in burrows they dig themselves. The other poisonous lizard is the Gila monster’s closest relative, the Bearded lizard. The Bearded lizard can be found in Mexico. bodyOffer(5630) The Gila monster is named after the Gila (Hee-Luh) River basin in Arizona. Gila monsters are rarely more than twenty inches long. Its skin is brightly patterned in a blotch-like formation, and it is black and coral in color. The face is black. This color and patterning is nature’s warning for other animals to stay away. They instinctively know it is a dangerous animal. Its color will vary with the habitat. It has strong claws for digging burrows. It moves sluggishly, but it can swap ends and snap rapidly. When a Gila monster feels threatened, it throws its head in the air. Then it snorts and puffs. There isn’t a lot to eat in the hot, sandy deserts, thus the Gila monster eats as much as it can and stores fat in its tail. The fat can be broken down to provide energy and water. It can live off the fat in its tail for months or even years. Gila monsters mate throughout the summer. Three to five eggs are laid from fall to winter.

26. Gila Monster: WhoZoo
The gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum) is one of two known venomous lizards, the other being the Mexican beaded lizard, Heloderma horridum.
http://www.whozoo.org/anlife2000/jamiebritt/gilaindexrev.html
Gila Monster
Scientific Name: Heloderma suspectum (Class: Reptilia, Order: Squamata, Family: Helodermatidae) Location at the Zoo: Herpetarium
Physical Characteristics The Gila Monster ( Heloderma suspectum ) is one of two known venomous lizards, the other being the Mexican beaded lizard Heloderma horridum. It has a heavy cylindrical body covered with small, rounded, bead-like scales over the back and broader plates on its underside. Fat is stored in the short blunt tail. Adults vary from 12-14 inches in length and weigh 3-5 pounds. There are five toes on each foot with short sharp claws. Color ranges from pink to orange and the pattern of dark patches or bands varies from animal to animal. In one subspecies, the pattern changes with age and older animals are more reticulated. Habitat The Gila Monster seems to prefer an area which is wet enough to support shrub life. They prefer rocky foothills and desert scrub, but also occur in drier, sandier areas; they avoid open land or agricultural areas. They are nocturnal burrowing lizards and spend a lot of their time underground. They are predominately found in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Mexico.
Adaptations: Gila monsters have three adaptations that enhance their survival in their desert environment: First, they have large bodies, and can consume large amounts of food during a brief period. Second, they need to feed infrequently because they can store fat in their tails. Finally, their metabolic rate is low, so that they burn up their fat reservoirs slowly.

30. Lizards: Fact And Myth
Some lizards are facing becoming nonexistent due to a lack of understanding. Beaded lizards and gila Monsters are poisonous lizards, often killed out of fear.
http://wv.essortment.com/lizardsreptiles_rfzo.htm
Lizards: fact and myth
Lizards are probably the most familiar of all reptiles. There are over 3500 different types of lizards throughout the world, existing in all climates including as far south as Argentina and as far north as Norway and New Zealand. They can survive at sea level or heights the upwards of 16000 feet. Lizards are as diverse as their dwellings. They are often misunderstood and feared because of a lack of knowledge and exposure. In many countries, lizards are welcome houseguests, catching and eating many annoying insects. They walk the walls and ceilings and live their lives unharmed by understanding humans. Some lizards are facing becoming non-existent due to a lack of understanding. Beaded lizards and Gila Monsters are poisonous lizards, often killed out of fear. They store poison in their lower jaw but only bite and inject the poison for food and self defense. Left alone, both lizards are docile creatures. bodyOffer(27974) Lizards are adaptable creatures. Some, like Geckos, are very delicate, while others are stronger and physically more durable. There are Chameleons that are able to change their outer skin color to hide in their environment. There are lizards that can re-grow their tails and who will voluntarily give up their tails when attacked. Not all lizards have four legs. There are legless lizards and those with only their hind legs. They have evolved this way to adapt to their environment where burrowing into holes is a necessity and legs would just get in the way. Diversity among the lizard population is evident in size as well. The Gecko is very small compared to the Gila Monster, but neither lack in agility and swiftness, a trait shared by most lizards.

The Gila Monster is a large, venomous lizard . This slow-moving predator was named for the Gila River Basin in the southwestern United States. The Gila Monster's scientific name is Heloderma suspectum (genus and species). This solitary meat-eater is mostly nocturnal , most active during the night. The Gila Monster becomes dormant and stays in a burrow during the winter. This lizard can live for months without food; it lives off fat stores in its tail. Its life span is about 20 years. Habitat : Gila Monsters live in the Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan deserts of Mexico and the USA. It is the only poisonous lizard found in North America. Venom : The Gila Monster has a potent venom, a nerve toxin, that is produced in glands located in the lower jaw. When a Gila Monster bites an animal, the poison flows into the wound via grooved teeth. This poison only rarely kills people. Diet : The Gila Monster is a carnivore (meat-eater). It eats small mammals (like rats and mice), birds, lizards, frogs, and eggs. It senses prey using its long, sensitive tongue.

    Banded Gila Monster
    Genus : Heloderma
Species : suspectum cinetum The Banded Gila Monster is very shy but can strike back very quickly, with painful results. It is a subspecies of the Gila Monster (Heloderma suspectum), and is one of two poisonous types of lizard in the world. They are pink, orange and red. Four or five black bands with spots in them run around the body. The tail is also banded. Their heads are spotted with black around their eyes and mouth. Their patterns are really amazing because their colors send out a warning to any predators that they are poisonous. The Banded Gila Monster can get to be 2 feet long and can weigh up to 3 pounds. They have a big head, fat body, and a thick, short tail. They have short legs with average sized claws for a lizard of its size. Its skin is dry because it lives in the desert and can't afford to lose fluids. The texture is bumpy. The gila monster hunts at day, but is hardly ever seen by people because it is so shy. The Banded Gila Monster is mainly found in the Mojave Desert. It is named for the Gila River Basin which is found in the southwestern United States
