Bodies of Water Oceans and Seas
    Oceans
and seas are large bodies of salt water. The difference between the two is that a sea is smaller than an ocean, and is generally surrounded by land. The four oceans are the Atlantic , the Pacific , the Indian , and the Arctic . An example of a sea would be the Red Sea which lies between Africa and Asia in the Middle East. Oceans and Seas have positive and negative effects on human civilization. They often act as a barrier to both cultural diffusion and invasion . However, many civilizations developed good sea travel and were able to overcome this effect. Great Britain, Portugal, Spain, Greece, the Roman Empire , the Netherlands, Early China, and Japan all were major naval powers at one time or another. In fact, for many of these civilizations, oceans and seas acted as highways of trade , cultural diffusion, and invasion . Oceans and seas also provide a rich source of food and other resources , such as minerals and oil . Many of the above mentioned cultures developed major fishing industries as a way to feed their populations. Countries like Japan have a diet composed mainly of sea products and farmed vegetables. Great Britain, in the twentieth century, began drilling for undersea oil off the north shore of Scotland. Today, this valuable resource provides much of their energy needs.

Gibraltar Shaking Up the Rock A crippled sub is reviving talk about Gibraltar's colonial status by Tyler Maroney n the morning of May 19 last year the HMS Tireless, a British nuclear submarine, limped into the port of Gibraltar , powered by its emergency diesel generators. Having suffered a small crack in the coolant pipe leading from its reactor while on routine maneuvers off the coast of Sicily, the Tireless sought refuge at Britain's nearest naval base, which happens to rest at the southwestern tip of Spain, on the tiny limestone peninsula known as the Rock. For the better part of a year politicians and scientists from Great Britain, Spain, Gibraltar, and the European Commission have been sparring over the extent of damage to the submarine and the possible safety risks to people who live in and around Gibraltar. Gibraltarians and Spaniards called for the Royal Navy to transfer the

Geography Gibraltar is a peninsula with an area of 2.75 square miles linking to the southern tip of Spain facing the northern coast of Africa and dominating the western entrance to the Mediterranean. One of the world's famous landmarks, the Rock of Gibraltar runs from North to South for a length of nearly 3 miles, rises to approximately 1,400 feet and has been a key strategic site for many centuries. History Gibraltar's position at the southernmost tip of the Iberian peninsula, coupled with its dominance over the entrance to the Mediterranean, has given it a long and turbulent history and an influence on world events out of all proportion to its size and population.
