    Basic information on Ghana include:
    Area: 238,537 square kilometers
    Population: 17,748,400 (1996 estimate)
    Capital City: Accra
The Akuapim South District is located in the Eastern Region and is the seat of government for the urban centers that comprise its populace. The major city is Nsawam and the second major city is Aburi where the world famous Aburi Gardens are located. It is easily accessible to the capital city of the region at Koforidua and actually is quite close to the capital city of the country at Accra. Both Nsawam and Aburi are within a twenty mile radius of Accra. The population of the district is 111.850 quite comparable to Lansing, however it has a sizable rural population. The district possesses a relative wealth of natural resources and arable land. There are two rivers and coastal savanna grassland as well as developed forestry, electrical system, telecommunications structure, health and educational institutions. The Main Exports are Cocoa, gold, timber, manganese ore, diamonds, bauxite. Ghana is currently promoting investment in their countries infrastructure. Currently Ghana has signed an agreement with the State of Michigan for economic and cultural cooperation. Currently a Michigan based country has invested in producing a source of Energy production and many Americans are currently conducting business with Ghana. Within the Akuapim South district budding economic, cultural, health and educational ventures are being planned. There is a District Hospital which is linked to five clinics, four maternity homes, two eye clinics, an orthopaedic center and three private clinics. Linkages are being established with area hospitals in the Lansing area. The health system in the district can greatly benefit from resources which we have in the Lansing community.

    Issues in African History
Professor James Giblin, Department of History, The University of Iowa Like the art of all peoples, the art of Africans expresses values, attitudes, and thought which are the products of their past experience. For that reason, the study of their art provides a way of learning about their history. Through the study of African art we can study the questions which have long preoccupied historians of Africa. This essay written by a historian who studies the African past presents an introduction to these questions. Its purpose is to encourage students to use their knowledge of African art to think about issues in African history. As students of African art begin to consider the African past, they must also consider how Western conceptions of "race" and "racial" difference have influenced our notions of the African past. These ideas, which have usually contrasted the presumed inferiority of black peoples with the superiority of whites, arose in Western societies as Europeans sought to justify their enslavement of Africans and the subsequent colonization of Africa. Historians now recognize that ideas of racial inferiority have inspired the belief that in the past African peoples lived in a state of primitive barbarism. At the same time, they have realized that many of the European writings which they use to reconstruct the African past such as accounts by nineteenth-century missionaries and travelers, for example are themselves tainted by these same notions of African inferiority.

Sahara , which in Arabic simply means "The Desert." Around 750 AD, under the influence of Islamic peoples, northern and western Africans began to use the camel to transport goods across this forbidding terrain. Camels do several things exceptionally well: they can carry unbelievably heavy loads for impossibly long distances and they can keep their footing on sandy terrain. It was as if someone had invented sand ships and its effect on western African culture was just as profound as if they were sand ships. The most important developments occurred in the Sahel area just south of the Sahara; the Sahel provided southern terminal points for the goods being shipped across the Sahara. The Sahel is a dry, hot area with fertile areas and grasslands; all of the major north African kingdoms grew up in this area: Ghana, Mali, Songhay, and Kanem-Bornu: the Sahelian kingdoms
    Soninke
, a Mande speaking people living in the region bordering the Sahara. They built their capital city, Kumbi Saleh, right on the edge of the Sahara and the city quickly became the most dynamic and important southern terminus of the Saharan trade routes.
Ghana (this is why we now call the kingdom, Ghana). The kingship was matrilineal (as was all Sahelian monarchies to follow); the king's sister provided the heir to the throne. In addition to military power, the king appears to have been the supreme judge of the kingdom.

    58. The Status Of Human Rights Organizations In Sub-Saharan Africa
The regional headquarters are based in ghana. Program. Activities todate have been limited. Decade of Human Rights Education. history.
    http://www1.umn.edu/humanrts/africa/ghana.htm
The Status of Human Rights Organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa
    Ghana
CONTEXT In January 1993, after eleven years of often brutal military rule under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings was sworn in as a civilian ruler following a national election which brought him back into power. Rawlings won the presidential election with 58% of the vote as the head of a three-party coalition led by his own National Democratic Congress (NDC). A new constitution with institutional checks and balances came into effect after the election. Opposition parties accused the government of electoral malpractice and vote-rigging and boycotted legislative elections in December. The growth of human rights organizations in Ghana is a recent development, subsequent to the election. Most of the groups in Ghana are at a preliminary stage of formation, with the Ghana Committee on Human and People's Rights being the oldest. Most are constrained by inexperience and funding problems. Ghanaian human rights activists identify arbitrary arrests, detention, and restrictions on freedom of expression as common violations. However, since the election, they believe the situation has improved somewhat, although rights violations have by no means ceased. In the early part of 1993, police forcibly broke up a demonstration held by an opposition party to protest the budget. The new Constitution, which came into effect January 7, 1993, provides for a system of checks and balances, with an executive branch headed by the President, a parliament and an independent judiciary. The Constitution also provides for a Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice to investigate alleged violations of human rights and to take action to remedy proven violations. The Commission was sworn in in October 1993, but to date has not taken a strong lead in addressing violations. At the same time, the government created a national media commission to ensure the freedom and independence of the mass media in Ghana.
