JESUIT APOSTOLIC WORKS
What Jesuits Have Been and Are Doing
Chaplaincies:
UNILAG, LUTH, UNIBEN, Assorted Works Although the Catholic chaplaincy at the University of Lagaos (Unilag) was, in fact, one of the first works of Jesuits in Nigeria, it was not Originally part of the "official" agenda. Yet Unilag officials, including muslims, were asking whether the new Fordham priest-lecturers had come for the pastoral care of the Catholic students. The two faculty member, Frs. Schuh and Schuyler, did offer Mass for a small number of Catholic students, and the archbishop gave his approval to establish a chaplaincy. In those first few years, when the university population was small, the two Jesuits taught more than 50% of all students, mostly in law, business, and medicine, and thus had tremendous contact with the student body, Catholic and non-Catholic alike. In 1968, Fr. Schuyler began chaplaincy work at the School of Nursing at LUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital). That involved three Masses on Sunday, daily Masses, and pastoral care for thousands of students. Eventually, Catholics and Protestants on the university campus agreed to share in building a chapel. The cornerstone was laid in a ceremony on May 1, 1976, but the chapel, Christ Our Light, was only ready for use in 1984. Since then it has been used for Sunday and daily liturgies. The main assembly area holds 900, and the side chapel seats 175.

L OYOLA J ESUIT C OLLEGE
VISION STATEMENT
HOW LOYOLA JESUIT COLLEGE CAME TO BE
A committee for the planning of Loyola Jesuit College has been at work since November, 1990. It formed a statement of goals and objectives, determined preliminary characteristics of the school, and researched extensively into a location before settling on the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. This site was chosen not only because of the great needs for education in the blossoming capital, but also because of the opportunities for making a significant contribution to peace and harmony in the country. Just outside the campus is a typical small community - a reminder of exactly how far the country has yet to go. The school will be a co-educational boarding school of 800 students. It will be geared specifically toward preparation for entrance into University and will be extremely high academic calibre. There will be no discrimination against any person on religious, ethnic, or economic status in with the student body or faculty and staff. There will be no coercion of students to participate in classes or other activities in conflict with their tradition and beliefs. It will demand a complete adherence to the fundamental principles of the school as are clearly delineated in goals and vision statement.

INTRODUCTION This region is also dominated by the River Volta and Lake Volta, on its western flank. The lake is a source of power, and much of the water for the region; it is the water highway to the north, a great fishing lake as well as a popular recreational area. The festivals and ceremonies reflect the rich diversity of history and culture of tribal life in the region. The relics of European .coastal forts and other structures still remain, while further north vestiges of the German colonial era are unmistakable. The regional museum at Ho is an ideal place to understand the background to our heritage. Hohoe is an important centre of herbal medicine, which is of significant and growing importance both in Ghana and the western world today. Discover the Wli Waterfalls in the tropical forest near Hohoe, the highest in Ghana, or the nearby Tsatsadu Falls at Alavanyo, or the Tagbo Falls at Liate Wote which are almost as spectacular. Afadjato Mountain attracts climbers of all ages, while the Kalakpa Game Production Reserve is a special place for environmentalists. Volta is famous for its festivals and ceremonies, of which the Hogbetsotso of the Anlos people in November is probably the most famous. The people of Wli have a unique festival to give thanks for the gift of water.
