GHANA: Government Drops Production of HIV/Aids Drugs for an Order UN Integrated Regional Information Networks - July 4, 2003 Ghanaian health authorities have ordered anti-retroviral drugs from undisclosed sources to cater for the treatment of 2000 HIV/AIDS patients for the next two years. "We are placing this order through recognised international agencies such as UNICEF and the International Development Agency," Programme Manager of the National Aids Control Programme Dr Nii Akwei Addo told IRIN. Some of the drugs on the importation list are Zidovudine, AZT Didanosine , ddI, Indinavir , Neverapine and Efavirenz . Usage and treatment of these drugs will however be limited to specific hospitals such as the country's two biggest hospitals in the capital, Accra, and in the second largest city, Kumasi. The drugs will also be made available at the Atua/Agormanya government hospital in eastern Ghana, which according to the country's 2002 HIV Sentinel Survey has a prevalence rate of 7.9 percent, the highest in Ghana. "The cost of the treatment will not be 100 percent free to the end user. The central government will bear part of the cost, though we are yet to decide on that," Dr Addo said.

Malaysians demand $200m for share in Ghana Telecom Posted October 25th 2002 Telecom Malaysia, the Malaysian Telecommunication conglomerate which snapped up 30 per cent shares in Ghana Telecom at $38 million in 1997, are offering the same share to the Ghanaian Government for $200million five years after buying into the Ghanaian company. Sources at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle offices of the nation’s leading telecommunications company say the Malaysians are hell-bent on maximizing their income after losing the right to manage the company when the two year term of D’ato Malek Muhammad as managing director expired April this year. “By strange contractual agreement entered into by the previous administration of this country, Telekom Malaysia, which owned only 30 per cent shares provided four of the seven-member board of directors as well as the managing director and other senior members of management”, the Weekend Agenda reports. “Agenda can report that following the Malaysian offer, the Government of president Kufuor has referred the matter to PriceWaterhouse Coopers to evaluate the entire company to be able to assess the value of the Malaysian 30 per cent share”.

Text Only 1957: Ghana celebrates independence The people of Ghana have been celebrating the end of colonial rule and the dawn of their independence. Most workers have been given the day off - tens of thousands have gathered in the capital, Accra, to greet the independent country's first prime minister, Dr Kwame Nkrumah. The Duchess of Kent has been attending the celebrations. Last night, she opened the Independence Monument, erected near the spot where in 1948 members of the Ghanaian ex-servicemen's union were shot when marching to present a petition to the British Governor. The Gold Coast Legislative Assembly was prorogued at midnight to cheers from the waiting crowd outside. This morning the Legislative Assembly building, now the building of the Ghana parliament was packed with members dressed in their national costumes. The first Governor-General of Ghana, Sir Charles Arden-Clarke has been sworn in. Message from the Queen The Duchess gave a speech, setting out the Ghana Government policy. She also read out a personal message from the Queen to the people of Ghana.

Dear Sir,
MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS PRESS STATEMENT ON LIBERIANS
Our attention has been drawn to a publication in The Statesman newspaper (Accra) of Wednesday, July 31, 2002, of a news item reportedly based on a statement issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
As the organisation which held an international meeting on the Human Rights Situation in Liberia on July 22 and 23 in Accra, we would like, respectfully, to explain to you, Honourable Minister, and to the government of Ghana, the objectives of and proceedings at the meeting. We would also like to make some comments on the statement attributed to your Ministry.
The Media Foundation for West Africa is a human rights organisation that works to promote, advocate and defend press freedom and freedom of expression in West Africa. The organisation also works to promote the development of media professionalism. It is a non-governmental organization registered under the laws of Ghana on March 20, 1997. 30 July 2001 Ghana: Government Receives Us$330 Million for Economic Program, Roads Sector The World Bank yesterday approved two credits totaling US$330 million for the Republic of Ghana. The credits will assist the new Government's reform programs for increased growth and poverty reduction, and the sustainable and equitable development of the road network throughout the country. "These are two large and very significant operations for Ghana," said Peter Harrold, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, "which will contribute in a major way to the recovery of the economy in the short term, and to the laying of the foundations for equitable medium term growth." The US$110 million Third Economic Reform Support Operation Credit will help the Government restore macroeconomic stability and market confidence, while developing an agenda for accelerated growth and poverty reduction. The program will focus on: Restoring macroeconomic stability and strict governance through: a. reducing the domestic and foreign debt burden by curtailing the fical deficit and seeking debt relief under the enhanced Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative; b. strengthening the management and control of public expenditures; and c. eliminating the deficit of key public enterprises; · Reinvigorating the reform process in budgetary management, banking reform and the cocoa sector; and Supporting the preparation and implementation of the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy emerging in the context of a broad participatory consultation process, which is targeting the regions and sources of poverty that were identified by the recently completed Ghana Living Standards Survey.
