We have found that students considering Project Ghana frequently ask similar questions about the country and the program. Here you'll find answers to some of the most common questions. What are the living conditions? What do people generally eat? What is life like in Ghanaian village? What's involved in the community service project? ... What is expected of me as a member of the Project Ghana group?
What are the living conditions? What do people generally eat
The food that you will eat in Ghana also varies with where you are in the country. Fufu, kenkey and banku are the main starch staples in the Ghanaian diet. Fufu is made of cassava, plantain or yam and kenkey and banku are made from corn. Each undergoes an exhausting preparation process of pounding and cooking the grain into a paste and is typically served with a thick soup, or sauce, of varying spiciness. Meat, chicken, eggs and a wide variety of tropical fruits are also served and available. A favorite of both Ghanaian and American students alike is red red , a sweet dish of fried plantain and blackeyed peas. You will notice fresh seafood and coconut milk featured in the coastal fare.

Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live and act in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors. The Ashanti people of Ghana established one of the wealthiest, most advanced kingdoms in West Africa. When the first Europeans arrived in the area 500 years ago, they marveled at the elaborate Ashanti gold artwork and jewelry, naming the area the Gold Coast. Despite long periods of European influence and colonization, Ghana has maintained a strong sense of identity, as evidenced by the variety of traditional and modern art, dance, and music that flourishes throughout the country. Kumasi, site of the palace of the Ashanti king and one of West Africa’s largest cultural centers, is surrounded by villages whose artisans specialize in goldsmithing, wood carving, cloth printing, pottery, and weaving. Accra, the nation’s capital, boasts a renowned community of dancers, musicians, and artisans whose work is supported by institutions such as the Institute for African Studies and the School of the Performing Arts at the University of Ghana. In these welcoming and thriving artistic centers, you study the rich cultural heritage of this vibrant nation.

T he republic of Ghana, derives its name from the ancient Ghana Empire in the Western Sudan which fell in the 11th century. Ghana is the first black African colony to gain independence and until independence from the British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, Ghana was known as the Gold Coast. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive and others came later. The remnants of around 30 castles can be seen along the coast of Ghana. The castles bear witness to four centuries of the presence of Europeans trading in ivory, gold, and slaves. At the height of the slave trade, there were more than 60 strongholds along the coast which is a mere 350 miles long. These castles were built by the Dutch, Prussians, French, and British. Many of them changed hands.
The capital of Ghana was moved from Cape Coast to Accra by the British in 1876. See independence square at Accra Ghana.
