PEOPLE

Ghanians come from six main ethnic groups: the Akan (Ashanti and Fanti), the Ewe, the Ga-Adangbe, the Mole-Dagbani, the Guan, and the Gurma.
Ashanti Tribe
The Ashanti tribe of the Akan are the largest tribe in Ghana and one of the few matrilineal societies in West Africa. Once renown for the splendour and wealth of their rulers, they are most famous today for their craft work, particularly their hand-carved stools and fertility dolls and their colourful kente cloth. Kente cloth is woven in bright, narrow strips with complex patterns; it's usually made from cotton and is always woven outdoors, exclusively by men.
The village is a social as well as an economic unit. Everyone participates in the major ceremonies, the most frequent of which are funeral celebrations which typically last several days. Attendance at funerals is normally expected from everyone in the village and expenditure on funerals is a substantial part of the household budget.

Ghana is situated on the southern coast of the West African bulge and is bordered to the east by Togo, to the west by the Ivory Coast, to the south by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north and northwest by Burkina Fasso.
The coastline consists mostly of a low sandy, foreshore behind which stretches the coastal plain, except in the west where the forest comes down to the sea. The forest belt, which extends northward from the western coast and then eastward into Ashanti for about 170 miles, is broken up into heavily wooded hills and steep ridges. North of the forest is undulating savanna drained by the Black Volta and White Volta rivers, which join and flow south to the sea through a narrow gap in the hills. Ghana's highest point is 2,9000 feet in a range of hills on the eastern border. Apart from the Volta, only the Pra and the Ankobra rivers permanently pierce the sand dunes, most of the other rivers terminate in brackish lagoons. There are no natural harbours.

Thick soups are the mainstay of Ghanaian cuisine and are usually eaten with potatoes or rice. Another staple meal is Fufu, which consists of cassava, yam, or plantain that has been cooked, pureed, and mashed into a ball. Fufu is a ubiquitous and much-loved staple throughout most of West Africa. It can be topped with a fiery sauce or served as the bland accompaniment to a main dish. Fufu is traditionally made with cassava, but it can be prepared with everything from rice or yams, to instant mashed potatoes. On street stalls you can find plenty of foods to stave off your hunger pangs. A popular dessert is fried plantains seasoned with chilli pepper and ginger. This is usually washed down with a refreshing non-alcoholic drink made of corn called askenkee One of the more common foods served on ceremonial occasions in Ghana is oto . It is used as an initiation meal prior to the events of the day. Oto is always accompanied by hard-boiled eggs. For official ceremonial purposes

Country Info Ghana Introduction Ghana General Data Ghana Maps Ghana Culture ... Ghana Time and Date Ghana Culture Back to Top Ghana, formerly the british colony of the Gold Coast, lies on the West African coast, just north of the equator. Its warm, humid climate is typical of the tropics. Ghana covers an area of approximately 239,000 square kilometers, much of it drained by the Volta River system. The population speaks languages that belong to the Kwa and Gur subfamilies of the Niger-Congo language group and is divided into more than 100 linguistic and cultural units. Ghana's population, as in most sub-Saharan African countries, consists of urban and rural workers, herders, traders, and fishermen. Matrilineal, patrilineal, and double-descent systems of social organization as well as villages and chiefdoms contribute to the national mosaic. The precolonial social systems to which Ghanaians belonged consisted of both non-stratified and highly stratified societies. Virtually without exception, however, their organizing principles were based on locality, kinship/family, and clan structures. This is still two true today. Chiefs, who may be influential on the national level, were and still are selected from senior members of the lineages that are considered to have been among the founders of the community or ethnic group. Membership in a chiefly lineage carries some prestige. In the 1980s, the governing Provisional National Defence Council tried to address the nation's education problems by introducing a system that emphasized vocational and technical training for all students. A rural electrification program was also initiated. At the same time, village- and community-based primary care organizations enhanced child-care and nutritional programs aimed at illiterate mothers and those who held traditional notions about marital relations. Although it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs in the short term, at least some major problems have been recognized and steps have been taken to deal with them. The success of such programs, however, depends on the extent to which indigenous and modern institutions and cultural values are balanced and, especially, on the manner in which conflict is resolved.

http://www.chocolatebyjamieson.com/culture/ghanaindex.shtml
GHANA'S VIBRANT CULTURES:
The modern country of Ghana gained its independence in 1957. It takes its name from an ancient African kingdom.
The territory that makes up modern Ghana includes areas that were part of the old British Gold Coast Colony on the coast, parts of German Togoland to the east, parts of the former Ashanti Empire in the middle, and the predominantly Muslim Northern Territories to the north. Ghana has a democratically elected parliament and president, a market-oriented economy, and an active press.
Ghana is a multiethnic society whose citizens speak many languages like Twi, Fante, Ga, Ewe, and Dagbani. English is the country's official language.
Though the early states like the Fante on the coast, the Dagomba in the north, and the Ashanti Empire are gone, many chiefly traditions continue. Modern Chiefs and Queen Mothers have new roles in promoting the welfare of their people within the larger context of the modern country of Ghana.
Ghana's craft traditions have an international audience. The Ashanti Kente cloth woven in Bonwire, a village near Kumasi, the former chiefly city of the Ashanti Empire, has been adopted by many people of African descent the world over. It sometimes appears as an element in high fashion. Kente comes in many patterns; each distinct geometric element has its own individual meaning. We've used one of these patterns for our wrappers.
Other fabrics like Adinkra cloth are created for special occasions. Adinkra is produced by block printing special designs arranged in meaningful patterns. We adopted one of the Adinkra designs for our chocolate molds.

HISTORY OF COCOA IN ghana Cocoa has been grown in ghana at least since the 1870s. Britishgovernment officials also experimented with cocoa in ghana.
http://www.chocolatebyjamieson.com/culture/ghanaindex2.shtml
HISTORY OF COCOA IN GHANA
Cocoa has been grown in Ghana at least since the 1870s. The first documented evidence is that of the Basel Missionaries from Switzerland who began experimenting with the crop.
There is also evidence that Ghanaians began experimenting with the crop at the same time.
We also know that Tetteh Quarshie, a Ghanaian goldsmith or blacksmith, brought cocoa seeds from Spanish-controlled Fernando Po to continue further experimentation in cocoa growing during the later part of the 19th century. He encouraged other Ghanaians to grow the crop.
British government officials also experimented with cocoa in Ghana. No one, however, proved as successful at growing this imported crop as the indigenous Ghanaians. They understood much better than Europeans how to farm in tropical rain forests. Europeans often insisted on using techniques better suited to their home countries the result was failure.
Many Ghanaians made fortunes in cocoa in the early decades of this century.
To this day, cocoa is produced primarily by independent local farmers with small to moderate-sized holdings, not on the large plantations used in many parts of the world.

Ghana WebQuest by Sally Ladd Introduction Task Process Resources ... Conclusion
Introduction
The Smithsonian Institution is having a contest to design a new exhibit on Ghana for their Children's Museum. Its Cultures of the World exhibit has been featuring different countries. Since this contest is for elementary students, our class has decided to research Ghana's culture and submit a plan for the exhibit. The winners' names will be on a plaque at the Ghana exhibit when it opens. The winners will also be the special guests at a reception to meet the director of the museum and the ambassador from Ghana.
The Task The rules for the contest require the following topics to be represented in the exhibit: arts and crafts, clothing, celebrations, daily life, foods, geography, history, language, and music. Many people visiting the museum might not be familiar with Ghana. This exhibit will give them an opportunity to experience its culture. Some visitors may not even know that Ghana is in Africa! Sound like a lot of work? Don't worry, you will be working in teams. Each team will research one of the nine topics. We really want to win that contest, so it will require teamwork to come up with a plan that will dazzle the judges. With everyone's best effort, we should have a good chance!
The Process
  • You will be assigned to a team of 3 students.
