Germany's hill-and-trough history kicked in early: from the time that everyone's favourite fossils, the Neanderthals, left their jaw-jutting remains in the Neander Valley near D¼sseldorf, this joint has been in the thick of it. All of Europe's great empires got their paws into Germany, but none was ever able to count all its inhabitants as faithful subjects. Different pockets of fierce resistance met the Roman legions (50 BC to the 5th century AD), the Frankish conqueror, Charlemagne (up to the early 9th century), and Otto the Great's Holy Roman Empire (from late in the 10th century). By the time the house of Habsburg, ruling from Vienna, took control in the 13th century it was little more than a conglomerate of German-speaking states run by parochial princes. Wilhelm II dismissed Bismarck in 1890, lingered long enough to lead Germany into WWI, then snuck off to Holland in 1918 when he realised the war wasn't going to end in a ticker-tape parade. Germany struggled with civil unrest and a disastrous peace, uniting only in dislike of the reigning Weimar Republic. Then came Adolf Hitler, an Austrian drifter and German army veteran who was able to turn general disaffection into a focused lunacy. In 1933 his National Socialist German Worker's (or Nazi) Party assumed ultimate authority over Germany. Extravagant military spending and blas© border bending gave way to outright aggression, WWII, and the unrivalled horror of the Holocaust. Even the Germans were surprised by the success of their initial invasions, but by 1943 a litany of heavy losses set the tone for the sluggish march to 1945's unconditional surrender.

Germany History
The worldwide Depression in the 1930s caused extremely high inflation and political instability in the Weimar Republic. Those conditions were exploited by the Nazi party, under Adolph Hilter, which came to power in 1933, the beginning of the Third Reich. Germany invaded Poland in 1939, which started World War II. When Germany was defeated, it was split again, with the eastern sector under the control of the Soviet Union and the three western sectors under the control of France, Britain and the U.S. During the Cold War, East Germany enjoyed the highest standard of living among Warsaw Pact countries, though that prosperity was relative: West Germany forged ahead with the "economic miracle" spurred on by the Marshall Plan. The Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, and less than a year later, the two Germanys were reunited. Today, united Germany is the economic powerhouse of Europe. The Erckebbrecht Erckenbrecht's were from the region of Baden Germany. Daudenzell 14 km N.E. of Sinsheim in the Kraichgan There were two little countries of the old German empire called upper and lower Patatinate. These two countries were one political until 1620. They were later seperated by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Bavaria was given the largest part of Palatinate. The rest was divided amoung Baden, Hessedarmstadt, and Prussia. Later in history Baden was made a grand duchy by Napoleon and joined the German Republic 1817. Baden is now a historic secion of Germany which lies on the east bank of the upper Rhine river. During WWII Baden district was the location of fierce fighting between the Allied forces and the Germans.

    History of Germany
The Federal Republic of Germany is one of the world's major industrialised countries, located in the middle of Europe . It is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark and the Baltic Sea , to its east by Poland and the Czech Republic , to the south by Austria and Switzerland and to its west by France , Luxembourg , Belgium and the Netherlands . Germany is a founding member of the European Union
    History
Main article: History of Germany The German language and the feeling of "Germanhood" go back more than a thousand years, but the state now known as Germany was unified as a modern nation-state only in 1871 in Versailles, when the German Empire, dominated by Prussia, was forged excluding Austria that was to remain a multi-ethnic empire for another 50 years. This was the second German Reich, usually translated as "empire", but also meaning "realm". The first Reich – known for much of its existence as the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation – stemmed from the division of the Carolingian Empire in 843, and existed in varying forms until dissolved in 1806 as one of the consequences of the Napoleonic Wars.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... GERMANY The region that would become Germany was populated by Germanic tribes well before the coming of the Roman empire to the region. Though they largely resisted Rome, some served in the Roman legions. Germanic barbarian invasions did, however, contribute to the ultimate fall of Rome. Charlemagne united most of the region, but it was a fragile unity and during the time of the Holy Roman Empire, there were several hundred individual political bodies in the territory of the Germanic peoples. The political fragmentation grew only more complex in the 16th century with the Protestant Reformation, which had its roots in Germany. The Congress of Vienna agreed to the creation of a German League composed of 39 states. Of these were 5 kingdoms including Prussia which went on to conquer its neighboring states and declare a German empire under its chancellor, Otto von Bismarck. Germany became an industrial powerhouse in the late 19th century, with a modest colonial empire and serious military aspirations. Kaiser Wilhelm II ruled the german empire at its height just prior to the First World War. Germany's defeat in that war was so complete, however, and the terms of its surrender so humiliating that the seeds were sown for an even greater catastrophe, the Second World War. The Weimar Republic, set up after the war, was never able to truly overcome the economic problems, labor unrest, and political fragmentation of the post-war period. Hitler became chancellor in 1933, functionally ending the Weimar Republic and ushering in one of the darkest chapters in world history. After annexing Austria and Czechoslovakia, Hitler pounced on Poland in 1939, going on to steamroll over most of Europe. In the wake of the Nazi war machine, millions were killed, including most of the Jewish population of Europe. Germany itself was devastated and with the end of the war, it virtually ceased to exist as a political entity. Divided between the Allies, into zones of occupation, Germany began to epitomize the deepening Cold War between the West and the Soviet Union. Two Germanies eventually were created: a West Germany, shaped on the parliamentary republic model and led by Konrad Adenauer and an East Germany, repressive, single-party, and deeply tied to the Soviets. To keep the population of East Germany from escaping, the government constructed the formidable Berlin Wall in 1960, which was not dismantled until 1989 as the inevitable fall of communism became increasingly clear. The reunification of Germany took place in 1990 and though the initial euphoria has dimmed, Germany continues to work on solving its problems (particularly the economic ones associated with having had to absorb a stagnant East Germany into the booming West).
