Cruise's private Scientology sessions
MSNBC/January 31, 2002
By Jeannette Walls with Ashley Pearson
Tom Cruise has been working overtime on behalf of the Church of Scientology. On Wednesday, it made headlines overseas that the "Vanilla Sky" actor, a devout Scientologist, had met with Dan Coats, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, to lobby the case for the rights of the church in Germany. A top church official, however, tells The Scoop that Cruise has been privately meeting with top politicians on behalf of the church for the last few years. Kurt Weiland, a director of the church, says that among the U.S. officials who have met with Cruise to discuss the Church of Scientology's plight are Attorney General John Ashcroft and Sen. Jesse Helms, the Republican from North Carolina who is also senior member of Foreign Relations Committee. Weiland says that there were "private meetings and correspondence" between Cruise and both Helms and Ashcroft "a few years ago." When asked if those meetings and letters resulted in anything, Weiland said, "Yes. Efforts were made by them to let the German government know that . . . . they were missing the mark." The issue has been a cause celebre in the church for years. John Travolta, also a Scientologist, reportedly discussed the plight of the church in Germany with Bill Clinton when he was playing the then-president in the movie "Primary Colors." And in 1996, a group of Hollywood heavyweights wrote a letter to then-German Chancellor Helmut Kohl about the country's treatment of Scientology.

    By Tom Heneghan
    Pearson Education
    , London, 2000
    256 pages ISBN: 0273650122
Unchained Eagle: Germany after the Wall is the story of reunited Germany, from the dramatic events leading up to the merger of east and west to the government's move to Berlin and Helmut Kohl's disgrace over his illegal slush funds. It looks at the challenges that have faced the nation - defining its military role, integrating eastern Germany, fighting neo-Nazis and shaping a German vision for the European Union - and assesses how it has met them. It reflects on the concerns and controversies over economic reform, European monetary union, remembering the Holocaust and shaping the new Germany. It is the story of a country and its people at the centre of the evolving Europe. A long-time observer of German politics, Heneghan was in Berlin as the Wall fell and spent the next decade reporting at first hand on Germany for Reuters news agency. "Tom Heneghan's book is a fascinating read for anyone with either a professional or general interest in Germany. He has done a remarkable job in recreating the events of the past ten years, which makes this book the most essential publication in the English language for years to come." - Contemporary Review (Oxford).

The compensation bill is still incalculable
As Germany's flood waters reach historic peaks, the country's authorities are scrambling to cope with the economic effects of the crisis. Germany's finance ministry announced that it was considering a range of tax breaks for flood victims - a move that would see current government aid commitments of 385m euros (£246m; $378m) multiplied many times over. At the same time, the labour ministry said it was drafting in some 5,000 of the country's 4 million unemployed to help in affected areas, so far mainly in the east and south of the country. But economists predict that the German economy, a sluggish performer so far this year, could in fact be modestly boosted by the reconstruction effort. There is also speculation that the European Union may allow the country some leeway in the budget deficit limits agreed for the eurozone. 'Billions of euros' Estimates on the likely cost of the German floods are still vague.

    Schroeder: Support, but no "adventures"
The lower house of the German parliament has voted overwhelmingly to support international military efforts to fight terrorism. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder told parliament that the fight was not a war against a state or the Islamic world. Separately, the German Government approved measures that would allow authorities to outlaw religious groups that abuse their status to engage in criminal activities. That proposal must still be approved by parliament. The government did not name any specific organisations it wants to ban.
    Eichel: Fighting money laundering
Finance Minister Hans Eichel said on Wednesday that the government planned to spend an additional DM3bn ($1.4bn) next year to fight terrorism. The funds - will which come from increased levies on tobacco and insurance - will go towards the intelligence agency and increased protection of airports and German embassies abroad.
