In professional or business situations correct manners and appropriate behaviour are essential. Do you know how to handle yourself tactfully and confidently in every situation that may present itself? Politeness, consideration, and social charisma are increasingly becoming the keys to good manners. Anyone who interrupts his business partner while he is talking, comes to a business function inappropriately dressed, has bad table manners or incorrectly addresses his colleagues is just building unnecessary barriers between himself and success. Correct conduct with colleagues and customers, how to master difficult situations, the correct tone to use in letters and e-mails, table manners - these are a few important things that you can find tips on in this article. These will help you to avoid uncomfortable situations and to tactfully deal with unpredictable situations in all social circles from the second you get off the plane.

v v NEW PROGRAM: Visual Culture in Berlin ... New Berlin Scholarship! Berlin has been at the center of European history over the last two centuries. It was the hub of Europe's industrialization in the nineteenth century, the capital of the Nazi state in the mid-twentieth century, and the battleground for Eastern and Western power struggles between 1945 and 1989. Divided into two very different societies during the Cold War, Berlin was re-united along with the rest of Germany after the Berlin Wall was jubilantly dismantled by protesters in 1989.Restored to its status as an historic world capital, the city has become a fascinating microcosm of the New Europe, marked by an active involvement in the developing European Union and progressive social welfare policies but also by struggles with political extremism and tensions over immigration. Lexia students will be able to study firsthand changing notions of German and European identity and the continuing impact of history, politics, and memory on people's daily lives. Past programs in Berlin have included joint visits and seminars with other Lexia program sites in Central Europe, such as Budapest, Krakow and Prague. Students visit other sites for several days, meet other Lexia students in seminars and excursions, and compare their experiences as a way to further explore the legacy of East-West European divisions and the promise of a larger European identity.

German Haus Barn Manning, Iowa 51455 In the 17th and 18th centuries, haus barns (house barns) were a common form of dwelling throughout several areas of Germany, This was especially true in Schleswig-Holstein, a state in the Northwest part of Germany, Many of the Manning area families are descendants of immigrants from that area. As a means of "getting in touch" with our heritage the Manning Heritage Foundation (MHF) began searching for an authentic haus barn in Germany. Two years ago a 300-year-old structure became available near Itzehoe. The owner, Claus Hachmann, needed to remove the structure from his land. Through Dr. Carl Johannson, curator of the Mofsee Open Air Museum, south of Kiel, the MHF was able to locate and seek possession of this building. The Molfsee Museum currently has many examples of German Haus Barns preserved for tourists to view, and luckily for Manning, they already have an example of the style of this barn. They were our advocates to the German government to make it possible for Manning to import this particular building for the purposes of establishing the first German Heritage Museum in the United States. The haus barn is a unique structure that consists of living quarters for not only the family, including bedrooms, sitting, dining and cooking areas, but also areas for housing livestock, farm equipment and feed.

"A landmark study. . . . Widdig's energetic account uses an interdisciplinary approach to reveal how economic anxieties were powerfully symptomatic of larger social and cultural issues."Maria Tatar, author of Lustmord: Sexual Murder in Weimar Germany "Bernd Widdig displays sharp intelligence and uncommon wit in this brilliant study of culture and inflation. Following the explosions in politics and culture that the inflation detonated from the end of World War I to the rise of the Nazis, this book is a bold and original meditation on modernity and money and the trauma of oblivion. It is a masterful, illuminating analysis."Peter Fritzsche, author of Reading Berlin 1900 "Widdig's account of the cultural impact of the German hyperinflation adds an important dimension to the history of interwar Germany. He brings a unique perspective to the interaction between popular culture and political and economic decisions in the twentieth century. This fascinating book raises intriguing questions for economic and political historians."Peter Temin, author of

    Popular Culture (Germany)
Popular Culture (Germany) Serious study of popular culture is usually concerned more with long-term trends than with sudden convulsions. But the impact of the short-lived upheavals of 1848-49 deserves attention because this brief period of unprecedented legal and political permissiveness revealed some of the tensions in mid-century German society that were normally concealed under a blanket of official repression. One striking feature of the revolutionary years was the obvious upsurge for spontaneous association. Large open gatherings ( Volksversammlungen Vereine ) that had been developing since the late 18th century. There were reading, choral, gymnastic and marksmen's clubs, associations for promoting education or business or social welfare every sort of social activity was conducted through a club of some sort, the number of which had increased rapidly in the 1830s and 1840s. Only political clubs were lacking, because they were forbidden under the old regime. But when political activity was legalized in 1848 nearly every locality quickly acquired both a democratic and a liberal club, at least. For a nation immersed in club activities it was the most natural form for a political action to take. The new political clubs acted in a variety of ways. They tried to influence public opinion, and they joined in the almost universal drive for collecting signatures on petitions. (Nearly every organization in Germany seems to have initiated a petition of some sort: The Frankfurt parliament alone got 17,000 of them, many with hundreds or even thousands of signatures.) The political clubs also supported candidates for election, and they formed the core constituency organizations of the slowly emerging national political parties.

    Country Profile

    Flag of Germany Background:
As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations.
European power struggles immersed the country in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945.
With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC and NATO, while the communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990.

The Stanford University Libraries (SUL) have, beginning in 1990, actively acquired recent and contemporary primary sources, including special collections in German cultural, literary, and social history. These collecting activities have not only been stimulated by research directions linked to the reunification of Germany, but also by the opening of new channels for acquiring materials. In response to these opportunities, we have built a collection of primary source materials that emphasizes the theme of culture and cultural politics in the former German Democratic Republic. The collection is divided under the following headings: Theaterverlag Autoren-Kollegium (Special Collections. M637)

Für Informationen auf Deutsch , klicken Sie bitte hier Literature as a 'cultural microcosm' may be considered a special means to develop a significant sensitivity towards world pluralism. The course intends to intensify the dealings with cultural foreignness and an intercultural dialog through literary subjects such as "Fremdheit" (Xenology) and "Toleranz". German literature after 1945 (die "Stunde Null") until the reunification in 1989 is deemed useful for this undertaking since it includes a variety of 'migration-literature, 'literature in exile' and post-war literature (Gruppe 47). Bearing in mind that literary writing depends on literary tradition and the life experience of the authors, the course as a whole is also intended to deepen the knowledge about literary history and theory. Morning language classes
In this class students will learn about current cultural, regional, and social themes which are based on the central concepts of Language and Society in Germany Today . This course is comprised of 20 hours of weekly classes (45 min/h) and is offered at various levels of competence. There will be a placement test at the beginning of each course. Literary studies in the afternoon
The course of literary studies examines a collection of literary texts and selected authors in order to promote a more thorough understanding for literary life in Germany and cultural identity of Germans.

    By Rosie Goldsmith
    BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents
Dresden is suffering the effects of the economic crisis BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents travelled to Germany and found the tradition of lavish state support for arts under threat. Germany has always been proud of its arts, with more theatres, opera houses and museums than many other countries. Most of these have been generously funded by the state. But times are changing, and the German economy is in trouble. Unemployment is high and Germany's health, education and social services have all suffered. And the latest casualty of the crisis is its unique approach to arts funding. The German miracle is over. Our subsidies have been frozen and it is impossible to continue providing good opera on this basis
Louwrens Langavoort, Hamburg State Opera Compared with Britain and France, Germany's arts have always been spread out locally and regionally, not just concentrated in the capital.
