For much of German history, Germany was a geographical term for an area occupied by many states. A unified nation for 74 years (1871-1945), it was divided after World War II into the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG; commonly known as West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR; commonly known as East Germany). On October 3, 1990, East Germany, or the GDR, became part of the FRG, and Germany once again became a unified nation. It has an area of 356,959 sq km (137,823 sq mi). News Bulletin Current Affairs Euro 2004 ... Reader Response "The Passion" Stirs Heated Debate in Germany The film is under fire for being too graphic. The controversial biblical film epic The Passion of the Christ opens in Germany this week. Debate has already begun raging on its violence and message even before the first showing on Thursday.
Mel Gibson's controversial film "The Passion of the Christ," the actor-director's blood-soaked account of the last hours of Jesus Christ, opens in Germany on March 18 to audiences above the age of 16. While the German censors have approved the movie for young adults, the content of the film is already beginning to create controversy similar to that generated elsewhere. The usual suspects have taken up their places on the side of the opposition, just as they have wherever Gibson's religious rollercoaster has rolled into town: church groups, Jewish organizations and concerned social elders in Germany have all started to voice their objections. But while the familiar accusations of anti-Semitism and misinterpretation begin to circulate, one factor that may cause equal debate in Germany is the level of violence, guts and gore.

News Bulletin Current Affairs Euro 2004 ... Reader Response Family Counseling on the Rise in Germany Things aren't always quite as idyllic. Today's International Day of Families is not a reason to celebrate for everyone: An increasing number of German families are seeking professional advice to cope with problems they face in their daily lives.
Family counseling centers are not a new phenomenon. In Germany, the first ones opened more than 70 years ago. The center run by the city of Cologne for example has been in business for three quarters of a century. It's focus areas and methods have changed significantly over the years. "Years ago, we functioned more like a repair shop," said J¼rgen Zimmermann-H¶reth, who directs the center in Cologne. "Parents or teachers came, 'dropped off' a child and said: 'Now do something and change things.' Today, it's the family as a whole that's seeking help. Parents tell us: 'We have a problem that also affects our children.'"

Germany - Land of Culture
Which German city offers the most interesting art encounters? Such a question is difficult to answer. It is one that German cities contend over from the north to the south. In the meantime, you can visit more than 5,000 art and exhibit houses in Germany overall.
Some of the more modern galleries, known for their especially attractive architecture, are the gallery of contemporary art/Hamburger Kunsthalle (Art Hall), the museums Schloss Moyland and Kurhaus Kleve Kestner Association in Hannover, Bremer Kunsthalle , Frankfurt Felix Nussbaum House and the old and new Pinakothek in Munich. In the old Pinakothek, you can see the masterpieces of Leonardo da Vinci, Durer, van Dyck, Rubens and El Greco. Art lover's, therefore, put this museum in the same class with the big museums of Europe.
The culture in Germany is broadly spread out. We cover a range from historic to modern by introducing two of the most popular destinations in the cultural category: castles and palaces, and musicals. The castle and palace constructions tell the history of Germany and take you into the past. The musicals lift you into modern worlds of imagination and promise an evening of cultural enjoyment. They fit ideally into the itinerary of a short trip or city tour

History, culture and current doings of Carpathian GermansGermans from Slovakiain Slovakia, germany, Austria and the United States
    http://ourworld.cs.com/ycrtmr
The Carpathian Germans were a small German people living in the territory of today's Slovakia from the 12th century to 1945, when they suffered genocide. The United Nations in 1948 condemned as genocide any attempt " to destroy in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as such "in its homeland by murder or deportation, and is currently judging political and military leaders who ordered and supervized such actions in the past round of Balkan wars. Such a destruction was also committed against the Carpathian German people in 1945-1947. This is the history, and the current doings, of the people I come from. This page is provided as a private volunteer public service. It does not represent the official opinions of the Carpathian German Landsmannschaft, but only my own.
