They are the biggest monuments of the Megalith-culture on the continent. Their size even exceeds on all the stony step-pyramids of brittany. There they are called "cairns" - prehistoric grave-houses and step-pyramids built in stone without mortar including one or several burial-chambers like dolmens or vaults of corbel-stone. The most famous example is the "Cairn of Barnenez" (picture 1)
picture 1: Barnenez
The Cairn of Barnenez during its reconstruction at the beginning of the 60s. The steps are planar. Before the disclosure of the burial-chambers, the monument looked like a scree or rubble heap, covered by rubble and debris. Cairns in Europe:
Cairns even are common in Great Britain with the same designation. Generally the spreading of this megalthic tombs (mega = big, lith = stone) reaches from northern Africa, the Balear-islands, over Spain, France, Great Britain, Scandinavia, northern Germany and the northern Switzerland to Poland. Only here in southern Germany there is a blank in the map of dissemination.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION B onn - Culture Bonn (pop. 294 300) was until 1999 the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany and still retains some governmental functions as Bundesstadt ("Federal City"). The "small town in Germany" (as John Le Carre saw it in 1968) attracts travellers interested in visiting the city where Ludwig van Beethoven was born and Robert Schumann died. Beethoven's home and a museum can be seen in the Bonngasse. Other sights include the Poppelsdorf Palace (with Botanical Garden), Bonn University (formerly the palace of the Prince-Elector of Cologne) and the Bundeshaus (former Parliament House). Just south of Bonn begins the romantic Middle Rhine valley with its vineyards and ruined castles. At Bonn there is a large University with nearly 40,000 students. But there are also a lot of cultural offers like an opera, some theatres and museums (the "Museumsmeile" was opened in 1993). Because the distance between Bonn and Cologne (1,000,000 inhabitants) is quite small, all the possibilities of this large city can also easily be used. Bonn may not be able to compete with the great cities of the world or even Germany, but it is a place of many attractions consisting of three once independent towns and numerous villages each with its own character and surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Great resource for understanding Germans and Germany

For anyone planning on living, studying, or working in Germany for any duration of time my advice to you is: "Don't leave home without this book." Important to keep in mind that Lord writes the book from the perspective of an American citizen who is married to a German, has lived in Germany for over 15 years, and has exchanged opinions with other foreign residents in Germany. In the introduction he discusses the parable of the blind men and the elephant and how this elephant is Germany with its "wildly contradictory ways." All in all, this is a very well written, organized, and balanced guide to Germany and modern German Life. (This review is of the revised 1999 edition)
A Great Book for those Planning to Live in Germany
I have recently returned from living and working in Germany for one year. I read this book upon my return to the States and found Mr. Lord's perspective unbelievably accurate of the culture that I experienced. Germany is a wonderful place, but as with any country, the culture can be confusing at times. Mr. Lord, an American who is married to a German and has spent 15 years living there, gives a very raw, accurate, and insightful perspective on the German culture. He informs the reader about Germany's history, current customs, traditions, daily life, and how Germany's culture is evolving today. Many reviewers believe that Mr. Lord's perspective is a tad bitter. I believe brutally honest is a better description. He delivers a very accurate perspective for foreigners who plan to be immersed in the German culture for a long period of time. I highly recommend this book to anyone planning to live in Germany.
